Every week we curate inspiring and educational content in an online format like the one you’re seeing here. As you continue reading, watching, and scrolling, our hope is that you’ll leave feeling a little bit more inspired. As an online Rotary club, we have these asynchronous meetings online, but we also meet in-person in the Silicon Valley / San Francisco bay area for service projects and for social events. Keep reading on, and feel free to also join us for one of our in-person events if you can make it!
Thank you to all of you who who made our Fundraiser
this past weekend a huge success! We had an amazing turn out and everyone who went had an amazing time! Also a huge thank you to Andrew Taw for chairing this fundraiser. He did a phenomenal job organizing everything and also special thanks to Mitty for being a member of Retzlaff and providing us the perfect venue space to host the fundraiser. Let's also not forget Shag's who once again made his famous paella that went extremely well with the wine that we had. This may be our clubs very first fundraiser but it definitely won't be our last, let's work together to make more of these happen so for anyone who would like to be a part of our fundraising committee, I would be glad to hear from you guys so that we can start planning more of these events!

Weekly Inspiration: Saucey Origins
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change. This week we are featuring a video from Great Big Story about the traditional way of brewing soy sauce.
Japanese shoyu, or soy sauce, was traditionally brewed in vats over two years in a process that dates back to the 7th century. Over the past 60 years, global demand gave way to industrialization, and today less than one percent of shoyu is produced in the old way. But on the island of Shōdoshima, Yasuo Yamamoto ferments soy beans traditionally in bamboo barrels similar to the ones his family has built for the past 150 years. And while it takes four times longer than the modern way to produce, the results are undeniably delicious. Let's have a taste.
Oral history is an important part of passing down the history of making things. Videos like these enhance that storytelling process. Very cool!

Sunday, August 13, 2017 - Escape Room Social in Santa Clara!
This Sunday, August 13, 2017 we will be heading down to Santa Clara for an Escape Room activity! An escape room activity is where a team gets locked in a room where you have to work together to solve puzzles in order to escape from the room. Those who don't want to join us for the Escape Room can choose to join us afterwards for our post-escape room celebration social. Members, contact Heather if you are interested in attending!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)
Last week's happy dollars went towards powering our club's projects and service grants.

While I am neither an event planner nor a professional fundraiser, I have chaired my share of both and understand all the concerns that any event planner/fundraiser has. You touched on one thing that I've learned about simply asking - whether for sponsorships or outright donations. Our brain (our subconscious, really) tries to trick us in advance of the ask, by introducing doubts and negative assumptions about how a potential donor will react. As you pointed out, though, people are usually looking for a reason to support you or your cause. Simply asking works amazingly well, especially when you have credibility with your prospective donor. No need for a lot of words, just the ask. I also loved the fog catchers. Another great example of how creative low-tech solutions still work in a high-tech world."

I particularly liked the tip about having a specific end-point goal for the fundraising ask, plus the tip about avoiding lengthy, verbal detail-dumps in face-to-face meetings and messaging. (I would love to see you completely revise the annual fundraising drives and messaging for NPR and PBS, two very worthy organizations which seem deeply entrenched in dated appeals and on-air funding practices, which haven't been modernized in decades.) I hope you come back again to present more fundraising eprograms for us!"

Special Program: Human Trafficking Panel
Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, education, technology, and humanitarian service. This week we have a special program: a human trafficking panel featuring special guest panelists.
Members and guests, welcome to a special program of our Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley. Normally we have a program we host and create ourselves through special guest invitations. This week, we are featuring a recording from this year's Rotary International Convention this past June in Atlanta, Georgia. The recording is of the Human Trafficking Panel with special guests US Senator Bob Corker, Gary Haugen from International Justice Mission (IJM), Ashton Kutcher from Thorn, and Rebecca Bender from The Rebecca Bender Initiative.Each of these panelists is a major advocate and champion in the fight against human trafficking. Human trafficking is a global issue that affects many of our local and global communities, including here in the Silicon Valley. Join us in this special program and insight into the fight against human trafficking.
