New to our meetings? Then I want to welcome you to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley’s online meeting! Every week we curate inspiring and educational content in an online format like the one you’re seeing here. As you continue reading, watching, and scrolling, our hope is that you’ll leave feeling a little bit more inspired. As an online Rotary club, we have these asynchronous meetings online, but we also meet in-person in the Silicon Valley / San Francisco bay area for service projects and for social events. Keep reading on, and feel free to also join us for one of our in-person events if you can make it!
This week we have a special message from our President Elect Andrew Taw who did an amazing job putting together our first every fundraiser for our club! It was a huge success and Andrew would like to have a few words for this week’s president’s message.
"Hello E-Club Rotarians, my name is Andrew Taw and I am the President Elect for this club! On August 6th, we hosted A Taste of Good with Rotary, a wine and dine fundraiser with live jazz at Retzlaff Winery in Livermore to support Laptops for Good, a club project that provides laptops to low-income high school students with a strong history of community service as they transition into college. Because we are an e-club, the team that organized the event lived all over the world and we had a silent auction that was also online so that our members all over the world can also participate. All-in-all, it was a very fun and successful event and we're excited about the next steps for Laptops for Good! Please look forward to a presentation about how we did with our event and the future of Laptops for Good." -Andrew Taw

Weekly Inspiration: Braille Trails - Helping the Visually Impaired Experience Nature
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change. This week we are featuring a video from Great Big Story about Braille Trails.
At age 11, Evan Barnard came across a vandalized Braille nature trail, one of the few places in his home state of Georgia where the visually impaired could comfortably explore the outdoors. As he began fixing up the trail and working with the Georgia Council of the Blind, Barnard promised to do whatever he could to help his new friends. A few years later, he created his own Braille trail. As he searched for other Braille trails around the world, he founded Nature for All, an online community for the visually impaired to find nature experiences near them. The website now includes over 200 Braille trails and sensory gardens from 35 countries.

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)

Member Nathan Gildart (Japan) had this to say:"This panel was extremely powerful. Slavery / trafficking in its various forms is indeed a scourge of the earth, and no nation is an exception, and we are all part of the problem and solution. I do agree that we can have a massive impact, and it would be another noble Rotary cause. Kutcher makes a good suggestion in that we should focus on the roots - "we can't arrest our way out" of the problem was an insightful statement. It's unfortunate that there will need to be much more concern from politicians and citizens worldwide. (including wealthy nations, if not especially) Technology can certainly be leveraged as part of the solution. Education is critical, as well as a higher standard of living around the world. Great video on Japanese shoyu. I did a quick Maps search and it's only 4 hours or so away from my new home. Hmmm... Happy to hear the fundraising event went well. (and loved the comic Yvonne!)"
Member Catherine A. (California, USA) had this to say:"Wonderful RI panel discussion. Thanks for highlighting this concerning topic to build awareness. The traditional shoyu-producing family and their story was fascinating as well. As a followup, Lisa Blanchard, founder of The Grateful Garment Project here in Silicon Valley, collects new, unused clothing for rape and trafficking victims, storing and distributing the clothes in hospital units where doctors collect evidence and treat rape injurues. (Victims' clothing is often collected for evidence, so they were previously leaving rape/trafficking intake hospitals clad only in cotton gowns.) Lisa began the GGP effort as a small grad school project in San Jose. GGP has now gone statewide and has expanded across the U.S, with new requests to expand GGP overseas to regions where rape and trafficking are endemic. Lisa is a wonderful speaker and experienced advocate for victims, who in our region alone (sadly) include infants, toddlers, children, teens and adults, of all genders. (If you ever have the chance to hear Lisa speak to a group, her entrepreneurial story about the beginnigs of GGP is really enjoyable, despite the serious subject.) More at: http://gratefulgarment.org Many thanks to the Rotary eClub of SV team for a great fundraiser last Sunday, plus the wine, music and Shag's paella. The "wheelbarrel of booze" door prize was an inspired idea! (I hear that the Fremont/Niles winning member is hosting the next party and we are all invited!) My online map didn't show construction of the new "Y" on Vallecitos Road in progress, so I arrived late, lost and a bit frazzled, yet really enjoyed the event and meeting so many other Rotarians, once I decompressed. A special thanks to Maxie who demonstrated Google Maps with GPS voice directions, on his cell phone. Thanks to our savvy eClub members, I now have a new tool to get me to any winery or social event, on time!"
Member Jaiki Alves (Brazil) had this to say:"Past-President Mitty Chang said us about how big of an inssue human trafficking, and I think it's very sad. In Brazil, we have been on a growth in the last two years (2015 - 2016) 8%. I am impressed by this discussion in Rotary, It's show us that we need open our eyes for community issues, but not forget about our Polio campaign, because we have more one year to help Afghanistan, Pakistan and more 120 location. Remember, each 1 dose, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation give us more 2 doses. Amazing meeting president Stephen. Congrats."
Member Roger Plested (British Columbia, Canada) had this to say:"Very interesting meeting. In 1981, Mauritania became the last country in the world to abolish human property slavery. However, Mauritania is one of 4 countries which still do not enforce the law. The best factual book on slavery is Black rednecks and White liberals by Thomas Sowell. You can listen to the book on you tube. Some interesting facts: At the end of the 18th century, human property slavery existed in every county in the world. The Quakers in Great Britain and USA were the first group in the world to advocate and ban the practice of human property slavery. It was Great Britain and USA that provided the leadership to first abolish slavery in the west and subsequently the east."
Member Mahmood Khan (California, USA) had this to say:"Slavery is still here they just calling it Human Trafficking. I think this is a decease just like Polio. We must tackle it just as we are tackling Polio. Lets Eliminate this from the face of the earth. I like what I hear - we at Rotary can make a huge difference just like Polio."
Member Heather Shaw (California, USA) had this to say:"Great job on the fundraising event. It had great food, people and entertainment! This weeks meeting was very informative and very intense. It was great to see all the approaches to combating it. I have visited the websites and plan on seeing what I can do locally"

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, education, technology, and humanitarian service. This week we have a program about Hackatruck from the Hackatruck Team, Francini Carvalho.
Francini Carvalho is a software developer with a degree in computer science. She began her work as a developer nine years ago, and has spent the last two years involved with technology education programs in Brazil and other countries.One of these programs is the Hackatruck, the topic of today's presentation. Hackatruck is an itinerant project in Brazil created to achieve several objectives, with the most important of them to take innovation and opportunities to students from every part of the country, and make these learning possibilities accessible to as many people as possible.Members and guests, please welcome Francini Carvalho!
