Laughing Out Loud (L.O.L.) with our Lady of LOLs
We believe that laughing a little every day keeps you healthier. Every week we try to share with you something that will make you smile! This section is curated by Rotarian Yvonne Kwan, our club’s “Lady of LOLs.”
From Yvonne: "In honor of our first fundraiser happening
this Sunday
at Retzlaff Vineyards in Livermore, here are some wine jokes! Don't worry -- I think they're quite grape."
I've trained my dog to bring me a glass of red wine.
It's a Bordeaux collie.
What did the grape say when it was crushed?
Nothing. It just let out a little wine.
Weekly Inspiration: A "Foggy" Solution to a Water Shortage
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change. This week we are featuring a video from Great Big Story about how one organization in Peru is using innovation to tackle a water shortage.
Millions of people in Peru lack access to safe water and sewage services. But Abel Cruz Gutiérrez has a solution. Gutiérrez, president of the "Peruvians Without Water" association, uses an ingenious system of "fog catchers" to make water accessible to residents of Lima's low-income neighborhoods. The fog catchers resemble large rectangular sailboat sails, which are composed of nylon nets that trap microdroplets of water. The nets are set up along the foggy areas of coastal Peru and are connected to pipes, which collect the water for larger storage tanks. Residents can then use this water as irrigation for crops or to raise animals. And while the water isn't currently drinkable, Gutiérrez is working on a solution to that as well
Clean water is a critical need for life. It's great to see innovation tackle a need like this.

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)
Last week's happy dollars went towards powering our club's projects and service grants.
Thank you to member Rory Olsen for his generous $15 donation to PolioPlus! Rory had this to say:"Life is good. Please apply my gift to Polio Plus!"
Thank you to member Monique Ziesenhenne for her generous $10 donation! Monique had this to say:"Please donate to the Annual Fund!"
Thank you all for your donations last week!
This week's happy dollars donations will be going to help fund our club projects and service grants!
Happy dollars is also a great opportunity to share with the group about something good that has happened to you, while giving back to a great cause.
So what are you happy about? Share with us below, and help support one of our future leaders!
Selected Six
Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select six comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.
Here are six comments selected from last week's meeting about The Palo Alto Art Center, the Power of Art, the Changing Role of Museums, and Why it all Matters:
Member Richard Knaggs (South Africa) had this to say:"I like the idea of Angela Hoang becoming our new International Service Chair who will oversee coordinating international service projects for our Club. As an international club it makes sense. I have got to go and find some durian. I am really curious. I wish Sam Owori's family my sincerest condolences. Thank you for your program Karen. I agree that it is absolutely critical that we take part in creativity and make things especially things that will make a difference to a community. I would love to visit one day."
Member Mahmood Khan (California, USA) had this to say:"So sorry to hear about Sam Owori, at such a young age and just he was about to launch his tenure. It goes to show how precious life is and make a difference every day. Being a Rotarian is such a mean. I am so grateful to all who are always there to contribute and make difference in their own way. Thank you Karen for your wonderful talk.Cheers."
Member Angela Hoang (Sydney, Australia) had this to say:"Thank you Karen for your great talk, it's so great that one of your goals is to get kids interested in museums and galleries, this will hopefully become a lifelong passion for them and we should encourage everyone to think of these places as vibrant and important parts of our community. You've inspired me to duck into our Museum of Modern Art here in Sydney tomorrow, most of the time we take our local galleries and museums for granted so thank you for reminding me that I'm long overdue to visit one of ours again!"
Member Raquel D. Juncal (Mexico) had this to say:"Certainly art has different functions in diverse cultures, historical periods and social strata, but perhaps the most important one is to achieve union by reflecting life and reality, producing harmony, structuring morality and developing the creative capacity, base of all new scientific discovery that helps to satisfy and to improve the subsistence. Karen, thank you so much for sharing your work!"
Member John Lozano (California, USA) had this to say:"Karen, thank you for the presentation. I like the idea of making art and developing a different museum experience."
Member Monique Ziesenhenne (California, USA) had this to say:"Thanks, Karen, for the interesting program! One thing you forgot to mention is the excellent shop at the Art Center, so I'll let others know that if you are looking for unusual, art-inspired gifts for people of all ages, the Art Center has a small shop that might fit the bill! I appreciate having it so close to us. Have never tried durian fruit, though I have to say that I've been interested, if I could only plug my nose!"
Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!
