Greetings Rotarians and Guests,We are now in the middle of summer here in California. When I was a high school student, it would have been around now that a grim realization would dawn: I didn't have nearly enough fun this summer and now it's half over! Like many other students, I didn't associate learning or school with fun; this would be a joy I would discover several years later. One thing I'm proud of about this e-Club is how devoted it is to making learning fun through both its meeting content and its youth programs. We are now less than a month away from our annual event which raises funds for our e-Club's many youth programs such as sponsoring students for RYLA/POWER, Laptops for Good, or the Duke of Edinburgh Award. I encourage all members and guests who are within driving distance of Livermore to check out this page, buy a couple tickets, and come have a good time with us!

Weekly Inspiration
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.
Curtis Carroll is simply known as “Wall Street” by his fellow inmates at San Quentin State Prison because of his winning reputation for picking and trading stocks. Currently serving a 54-to-life sentence, Carroll founded the prison’s financial literacy program as a way to better equip and empower inmates. For the past 10 years, he’s been teaching the basics of personal finance and how to trade and buy stocks. His goal is give others the tools and the hope to build a life beyond crime.

Coffee With a Rotarian
A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we have Ferheen from Santa Clara, CA, USA reporting on her chat with Roger from Kamloops, BC, Canada.
Almost all of the match ups I have had up until now were with folks I had met either in person or during a program so it was a pleasure to talk to someone I haven't met before! Roger lives in Kamloops, British Columbia (about 4.5 hrs away from Vancouver) and used to work as an estate lawyer for a long time. He is thinking about going back, but with better work-life balance! We talked about the different health care systems and policies between Canada and the US. And, how it would be REALLY difficult for me to be a doctor in Canada if I get my degree in the States :(Roger really loves to read and finished a book by Thomas Sowell, an economist at Stanford, called ""Discrimination and Disparities"" - I am super interested in reading it! He has also convinced me to visit Kamloops because of how beautiful it is. One day, Roger!!!And, I will be joining the programming committee as the ""Science Liaison"" (I gave myself this title!!) So if any of you have scientists in your life, please send them to me so we can invite them to speak for our club.Thanks for such a fun chat, Roger!!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! Coming from a country where cannabis are banned - The video was indeed very informative and I am amazed by how big this industry is! Really creative on how funds are raised and it is indeed an Industry with a lot of potential. Loved the Magic Wheelchair Video, It is surely a noble cause to give families memories for life. Would surely love to know more of such initiatives around the globe. People should see the heart & soul of an individual and not the disability.

I've been reading a fair bit in the last year about the medicinal marijuana industry mostly from a Canadian perspective, so it was interesting to hear it from the American side. October 17th 2018 will be a precedent setting day in Canada, when recreational marijuana will officially become legal. I do know people using medicinal marijuana now and they find it is effective. I really wanted to attend this recording. Interesting stuff indeed!
Loved the Magic Wheelchair video. Stopped what I was doing, teary-eyed, and tweeted it out.
Had the opportunity to attend the Rotary Club of Moncton meeting this past Monday with my uncle, Chip, who is a member of the Rotary Club of South Bangkok. (we were both born in Moncton, NB, Canada) He spoke to us about one of his club's initiatives (I saw some photos and got an update as well!)

My partner and I were also lucky enough to have lunch with our President elect Tzviatko and Masi on Saturday. They were visiting from Zimbabwe.

Program: The Write to Read Project - Building relationships and literacy with remote First Nations communities in British Columbia
Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, education, technology, and humanitarian service.
Bob is a retired New Westminster Police Inspector. He joined Rotary in 1996 and has served as Club President. In 2008 – 2009, Bob became District Governor for Rotary District 5040, made up 54 Clubs across British Columbia. In 1998, Bob became an Honorary Aide de Camp (HADC) to the Lt. Governor of British Columbia. In 2007 His Honour, Steven Point, and Bob started to work together to get books into isolated First Nations Communities in British Columbia. In 2012, after his term as Lt. Governor, HH Steven Point returned to the Bench as a Provincial Court Judge. As a result, Bob carried on as the Project Leader. Both men never dreamt that WRITE TO READ would be as successful as it is today.
