Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!
Here’s a message from President Andrew:
Greetings Rotarians and Guests,
A couple weeks ago, we had an awards ceremony of Laptops for Good. As one of our club projects that serve youth, LFG awards laptops, laptop mice, laptop cases, and USB drives to students who are low-income, matriculating into college, and have a strong history of community service. We awarded 4 laptops on July 7 to students who are pursuing careers with opportunities to improve communities in fields like law and engineering.Members Ferheen, Mitty, and I had the wonderful opportunity to meet these young scholars and hear about their dreams for the future and the nervous excitement about this next step in their lives. At some point during the morning chatting with the students, it struck me how incredibly unique the moment was. The funding that made all of this possible came from our members, all over the world, from different walks of life. I had the opportunity to stand in the middle, as support came from one corner of the world—whether it was paying membership dues, selling tickets for our annual youth services fundraiser, submitting happy dollars, fill out district grant forms, or spreading the word about our eClub—to award a tool that would help a service-minded student be successful in college and, quite possibly, go on to be world citizens themselves. There are few experiences more humbling than being a part of such an endeavor. I look forward to us continuing to do our best to do good.
Sincerely,
Andrew Taw,
PresidentRotary eClub of Silicon Valley
Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)
We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”
This week's LOL moment comes from our very own member, Brian Liddicoat, who shared this with me and thought I would get a kick out of it. I CAN't say he was wrong. The original Facebook post was shared with the caption:Performing a can-tata . . .Crumpled Beer Can ChoirPosted on June 15, 2017 by Nigel"Dutch artist Dennis Daniels created this brilliant display which I spotted just outside a small gallery on Prinsengracht. A choir made out of crumpled beer cans with Jack Daniels as the conductor!"
Weekly Inspiration
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.
The landscape of Iceland has changed a lot in a thousand years. When the Vikings first arrived in the ninth century, the land was covered in 25 to 40 percent forest.

Coffee With a Rotarian
A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we have Brian from Corralitos, CA, USA reporting on his chat with Tanya from Atlanta, GA, USA.
I chatted with our new member Tanya Martin, from Atlanta by way of Cincinnati. Tanya is a longtime professional editor, which is a skill highly valued by lawyers: she knows how to write! But lest you think Tanya edits dry technical journals, she also writes a pro blog on all things luxury AND writes mystery novels with a dominatrix flavor! So when the bad guy gets the handcuffs in the end, that’s just the beginning…. You will enjoy speaking with Tanya: I guarantee it!
We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!
Member Rory Olsen made a $20 donation. Here is what he had to say:Had a nice Coffee with a Rotarian with Andrew, our president.House is almost done. Please apply my gift to Polio Plus!
Member Brian Liddicoat made a $15 donation. Here is what he had to say:Both kids at camp: what to do with all this time?
Share your happy dollars thoughts with us and help with doing good around the world.
Selected Comments
Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.
Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.
Charlie Tuttle said:It's really great to see people---incarcerated or not---make the effort to better their financial literacy. Curtis' lessons will no doubt rehabilitate and help these people take care of themselves financially when they are eventually released, which is part of what a correctional facility should be doing.Bob, your program is inspiring! Helping them with their education will certainly improve the quality of life for the generations to come. Thank you for the work that you do.
Keith Marsh said:Bob, Thanks for the program. I just returned from Africa for a Rotary water project in Kenya and Tanzania. Took lots of photos and hope to share my experience with the club in the coming months.
Rushton Hurley said:Loved the videos about the inmate teaching finance and the Rotaract club in Uganda. Ferheen, I like your title - welcome to the programs committee! Catherine A, your happy dollars donation celebrating the successful rescue in Thailand was great to read. The presentation from Bob Blacker was an eye-opening one; it is especially strong for Bob's willingness to look past easy political reasons for ignoring a community and work from the heart.
Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!
Program: Re-Imagine Mental Health & Wellness
Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others.
What would it look like? How could we get there? Effective models coming to scale along the prevention continuum.
Share your thoughts or ask our speaker a question in the comments at the bottom of this meeting page!
Upcoming Program Recording Schedule
All of our guest speakers and programs are recorded live online over Zoom video conference. We welcome members and guests to join us in one of these upcoming recordings. Recordings are approximately 30 minutes long and are subject to change without notice.
Our online video conference room link for these recordings is always https://zoom.us/j/5104080000. You are welcome to join us! Please note the timezone for all recordings are listed for San Francisco, California, USA time (Pacific Time).
You’re Almost Done! One last thing: The Attendance Survey…
Thanks for reading and watching this week’s meeting. You have two last things to do before you’re done. First, we have a very short attendance survey below for you to fill out to record your attendance.
Visiting Rotarians, this is how you can get an email receipt to pass along to your club’s secretary as proof that you’ve attended our meeting if you need it for makeups.
Non-Rotarian Guests, we would love to see who is dropping by our meetings! This part is optional for you. If you think you may want to join our eClub at some point in the future, we would strongly recommend you fill out the attendance form as it will improve your chances of success for your membership application.
More importantly, for all members and guests — we strongly recommend and ask that you leave a comment below in our comments area below. Tell us how you enjoyed the program. Ask this week’s speaker any questions you might have. Or just stop by and say hello and tell us where you’re from!
