Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from President Andrew:

Circle-PF-Pic.png

Greetings Rotarians and Guests,With the Holiday Season upon us, it's a good time to think about the gifts we give and the kind of good we can do with them. During the meeting the week of November 19th, our very own Foundations Chair Cecelia Babkirk, talked about the kinds of impact The Rotary Foundation has done and how giving to the Annual Fund comes back partially matched to the Club to do more great service projects. I encourage everyone who is able to in the Club to sign up for monthly giving through Rotary Direct at https://my.rotary.org/en/donate. Your contributions will help us do more cool projects like school supply drives and laptops for high school graduates.

Sincerely,

Weekly Inspiration

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

On November 26th, 2018, NASA's InSight spacecraft is set to touch down on Mars after completing a 205-day orbit in space. Learn about the three distinct ways this groundbreaking mission will study the deep interior of the red planet in the latest video from Decoder.

Constructive engagement

When contractor Douglas Gardner, a member of the Rotary Club of Chandler-Horizon in Arizona, heard about the flooding in Texas caused by Hurricane Harvey in August 2017, he wanted to help people rebuild. He contacted Amy Hinchman of the Rotary Club of The Woodlands, Texas, and they developed a plan.

Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Brian from Corralitos, CA, USA reporting on a chat with Rebecca from Sydney, Australia.

Rebecca Fry and I had a wonderful meeting. She called me on Skype during her Monday afternoon commute home in Sydney Australia. I was relaxing at home on a Sunday evening in California. That’s life in the 21st century. We had a delightful conversation while my very suspicious 10yr old daughter took copious notes on the conversation to brief my wife when she returned from her evening nurse’s shift at the hospital: “Daddy was talking to a strange woman!”. As you know, the exuberant and irrepressible Rebecca lives and works near Sydney, the capital of Australia. She grew up in New South Wales and works in government affairs for Johnson & Johnson. We found plenty in common, including a love of travel, Australia and the national parks of the western United States. I hope that we’ll see Rebecca and her partner come visit us in Northern California sometime soon. She’s a wonderful human being and would make a very good friend. Rebecca, it was great to talk with you.

We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week! This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

Brian Liddicoat made a $15 donation.Getting excited for my upcoming family Christmas trip to the Phillippines, visiting Zenaida's family there.

Catherine A. made a $25 donation. My donation is for the Rotary Foundation, to celebrate the many Rotary Clubs actively doing monthly service projects to benefit kids. (Hint, hint, nudge, nudge.)

Anonymous donor made a $5 donation.

Share your happy dollars thoughts with us and help with doing good around the world.

Selected Comments

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.

Keith Marsh said:Once again, I would like to encourage all Rotarians to help the victims of the Paradise/Camp Fire. Send donations to: “Paradise Rotary Foundation”, c/o Scheer Memorial Chapel, 2410 Foothill Blvd, Oroville, Ca 95966.

Steven Shags Shagrin said:Great program! And I echo Keith's message to help the victims of the Camp Fire which wiped out the District 5160 Rotary town of Paradise. A great little Club there which now has a big community service project ahead of them.

Catherine A said:Brian, I really enjoyed your program and found your work with teens to be one of the most inspirational and important efforts for kids that we have shared online this year. Congrats on manifesting your ideas so successfully, on helping so many youth realize their dreams and on connecting teens and young adults globally with aid and their international peers. Awesome job!

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!
