Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!
Message from President Mitty
Looking forward and inwards.
Members and returning guests, it's great to see you again -- welcome back!New visitors and visiting Rotarians, welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley's meeting for the week of November 14th! My name is Mitty Chang, and I am president of this Rotary club.Every week we begin our meeting with a president's message. These messages each have an overarching theme and message. Last week's was to honor veterans. I want to take this time to also recognize that in honoring our veterans, I think it is only fit that we each think about what we can do for veterans in our local communities. We are each goodwill ambassadors, and together we can accomplish amazing feats. This week's theme is about looking forward and inwards. (Hint: the themes are usually bolded at the beginning of my messages!) With November now halfway through, 2016 is coming to a close and 2017 is about to make its entrance. That makes this a good time to look forward into each of our own goals for 2017. This is also a good time to remind everyone that officer positions for President-elect Stephen Zhou's board will be coming up early 2017. Rotary is a vehicle for you to reach your goals, but sometimes you have to be willing to take the wheel and drive it.As we look forward by considering our goals for 2017, we also need to look inward by deciding how we can improve ourselves. Our program this week one focused on leadership and personal development -- strengthening our presentation confidence. There are countless training session for countless topics available in the world, and many through Rotary. I encourage each of you to consider sharing what each of your personal goals in terms of what you want to focus on learning or improving. You might just find out that there's someone else in our group that's an expert in a field you're interested in learning more about, and that's worth a follow up conversation.Look forward and look inward. Plan for the future and work on improving yourself.I want to take this time to acknowledge a few of our members.First, congratulations to Rory are in order, as his third grandchild was born a couple of weeks ago. Congratulations Rory!Next, I would like to give a huge warm welcome to Felmer -- our newest member! You can learn all about him from his personal introduction in this meeting. Welcome, Felmer!!I also want to acknowledge Kenneth Oku for bringing up some terrific ideas on how to improve the club, and to Kristi Govertsen for being a fellow membership nerd and always being an inspiration.Halfway through my second quarter as club president, I can honestly say I am grateful to be surrounded by so many incredible people. Our members truly are what make this club great! As a club that is not even two years old yet, we still have a lot of improvements and change that needs to happen -- thank you each for believing in the club and for being here!Members and guests -- please enjoy the rest of the meeting!
Yours in service,
Mitty Chang,
President
Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley

World of Rotary: Meet Our Next 2 Rotary International Presidents
Rotary is a 1.2 million member organization that exists in over 165 countries. This segment is dedicated to sharing a story or an update of what is going on in the global world of Rotary. This week we are featuring our next two Rotary International world leaders.
Rotary International's 1.2 million members are led by Rotary's world president. The Rotary International President is the highest office in Rotary. Rotary International Presidents live in the Presidential house in Chicago, Illinois, and spend much of their year traveling the world visiting Rotarians and heads of state. For Rotarians, knowing who our Rotary International President is is akin to knowing the leader of the country you live in. This year's Rotary International President is John Germ. We introduced him earlier this year. Now let's meet the next two Rotary International Presidents!
Meet Ian Riseley, President-elect of Rotary International:
Excerpt written by Ryan Hyland of Rotary News
"Riseley is a practicing accountant and principal of Ian Riseley and Co., which specializes in advising local and international businesses, and has a strong interest in international affairs. He received the AusAID Peacebuilder Award from the Australian government in 2002 in recognition of his work in Timor-Leste. He also received the Order of Australia medal in 2006 for service to the Australian community.
'Governments see Rotary as positive representatives of a civil society,' he says. 'We should work with them to advocate for peace and conflict resolution, just as we are advocating for polio eradication.'
A member since 1978, Riseley has served Rotary as treasurer, director, trustee, RI Board Executive Committee member, task force member, committee member and chair, and district governor.
He is also a former member of the Australian Polio Eradication Private Sector Campaign and a recipient of The Rotary Foundation’s Service Award for a Polio-Free World. He and his wife, Juliet, are Multiple Paul Harris Fellows, Major Donors, and Bequest Society members."
Meet Sam Owori, President-nominee of Rotary International:
Excerpt written by Sallyann Price of Rotary News
"Owori is chief executive officer of the Institute of Corporate Governance of Uganda. Before that, he was executive director of the African Development Bank, managing director of Uganda Commercial Bank Ltd., and director of Uganda Development Bank. He has studied law, employment relations, business management, corporate resources management, microfinance, and marketing at institutions in England, Japan, Switzerland, Tanzania, and the United States, including Harvard Business School.
Since becoming a member in 1978, Owori has served Rotary as regional Rotary Foundation coordinator, regional RI membership coordinator, RI Representative to the United Nations Environment Program and UN-Habitat, and RI director. He has been a member or chair of several committees, including the International PolioPlus Committee, the Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force, and the Audit Committee. Most recently, Owori served as trustee of The Rotary Foundation, chair of The Rotary Foundation's Finance Committee, and a member of the Investment Committee. Owori is a Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation, and he and his wife, Norah, are Major Donors and Paul Harris Fellows."
For Members: Updates
This segment of the meeting is dedicated to our club members. Includes announcements. Guests, you are welcome to read this section or just skip it.
Weekly Update for Members:
Members, two new initiatives coming to you: "club invasions" and "coffee with a Rotarian."
Club invasions will be scheduled events where our members are encouraged to meet up at an existing Rotary club's meeting. These will be both in-person meetings as well as online meetings we will be invading! This will give members who go an opportunity to meet other Rotarians, but also an opportunity to socialize with your fellow members while representing our club!
Coffee with a Rotarian will be recommended assignments sent out to those of you willing to step up to the mantle. I will be reaching out to assign each of you to another member of this club, with the intention of you reaching out to them and interviewing them (optional: it can be over coffee). Members interviewing each other will then be asked to record a short video message to the club to tell the rest of the club what they learned about their fellow member. It's just a great way to get to know your fellow members. These can be conducted online or in-person (when possible).
Both initiatives will be rolling out directly to you by email over the next couple of weeks, but if these sound interesting to you and you might be interested in chairing these initiatives, please reach out to President Mitty at president@siliconvalleyrotary.com
Ultimately, the goal is to start building a stronger sense of community within our own club. That starts by making sure we all know each other!
Also - RE: Meet up in Atlanta + Cruise. I also want to take this time to briefly mention that I will be organizing a meetup in Atlanta for any eClub members that will be there for the Rotary International Convention in June 2017! Also, I heard you all loud and clear in the comments last week about there being interest for a members cruise! We will have to investigate some dates and cruises! Very exciting!!
Service Blotter - Don't forget to update!
Members, want to get your service update into the next service blotter? Please share what you’ve been up to, as it allows us to get to know each other better in the process! Just click on the link below to let us know!

Wondering about what is Happy Dollars?
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)This week's happy dollars go towards supporting our club activities.
So what are you happy about? Share with us below!

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select six comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.
Here are six comments selected from last week's meeting about ICA Fund Good Jobs:
From member Chris Cochrane (Toronto, Canada):
"Katie, thanks for a great presentation. So cool to "e-meet" Siri! In the next life I want to be reincarnated as Mitty Chang...travel, cruise... excellent! I'm in for a members' cruise. Great fellowship, excellent bonding time and a lot of fun!! Thanks for using the videos ... hope they remind all to thank a Veteran."
From member Monique le Conge Ziesenhenne (California, USA):
“Katie, your commitment is inspiring and you are a great example of how someone can volunteer and turn that passion into a job. Thanks for letting us know about your work. I'm in for a cruise, BTW. Rory - congratulations! Interesting and diverse meeting this week - thanks.“
From member Mark Dohn (Illinois, USA):
“Katie thank you so much for introducing us to ICA and the great work you are doing. While I may be in Chicago, I have several friends/entrepreneurs in the Bay Area who share your view that people come first in business. I will recommend that they become involved.“
From member Rushton Hurley (California, USA):
“Katie, totally cool work you are doing - thanks for taking time to share the story with us! Hopefully the next time we do some entrepreneurial mentoring, you can join in, too. Loved the energy from the KIPP Interact students, as well. Good to see Chris' work, as always! Ken and Yvonne, thanks for stepping up to host events. I wish I could join everyone for the dinner for Ferheen on Thursday! Her birthday was just last weekend, by the way, so whoever is there should plan to sing.“
From member Heather Shaw (California, USA):“Katie Love how you encourage offering a second chance to atypical employees! Great work. Looking forward to the Big Basin Hike“From member Martin Fox (Utah, USA):
"So in for a member's cruise - or surfing trip - or ski trip - or any other fun adventure with the club. Great introduction KIPP Interactors. Thanks for the program Katie. Loved those jokes Yvonne.“
Thank you everyone for attending last week’s meeting!
Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!
The Program
Every week we bring to you a program on innovation, education, entrepreneurship, and humanitarian service. This week our program's guest speaker is Dr. Robert Greenstreet on Presentation Confidence.
Meet Dr. Robert Greenstreet.
Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Greenstreet is the current District 5770 Governor. His association with Rotary began as a result of service. He provided Four Way Test Speech Contest judges for several years before he asked about joining the Ada Rotary club. Bob joined Rotary in 1990. He brought his wife Jennifer in a year later. After a series of work schedule changes, both joined the Ada Sunrise Rotary Club, where they found a home. Each has had perfect attendance since joining Rotary.Bob served the Ada Sunrise Rotary Club as its tenth President in 2001-02. A few years later he served as Secretary. During his year as president, the club launched Latta High School Interact. That year the Ada Sunrise Rotary Club was one of only four clubs in District 5770 to earn the Presidential Citation, continuing a club tradition. Bob is a member of the Paul Harris Society. He and Jennifer are Major Donors to our Rotary Foundation. Bob cosponsors the East Central University Rotaract Club. He also chairs both the Ada Sunrise Rotary Club and District 5770 Four Way Test Speech Contest committees.Bob and Jennifer have hosted Youth Exchange students. For many years Jennifer coordinated Group Study Exchange Team visits for the Ada Sunrise and Ada Rotary Clubs. Jennifer also served Ada Sunrise Rotary as Program Chair for several years. Both Jennifer and Bob have been selected Rotarians of the Year for their club. Ada Sunrise Rotary also recognized Bob with Rotary’s Avenues of Service Award.Bob retired from East Central University as Professor of Communication Studies Emeritus. A couple of years later Jennifer retired as the longest-serving Head Librarian in the history of the Ada Public Library. Bob and Jennifer enjoy reading, walking, NPR, their grandchildren, and their rescue Standard Poodle. Bob and Jennifer observe a vegan diet (they don’t eat food that comes from anything with a face.)
