A moment in honor of our veterans.
Members and returning guests, it's great to see you again!New visitors and visiting Rotarians, welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley! My name is Mitty, and I am president of this Rotary club. Every week we bring to you a new meeting and a new program on education, innovation, technology, or humanitarian service. We are a group of global and local leaders who love helping make our communities a better place.Veteran's Day falls on this week, and so we recognize all of the brave men and women who have served in our armed forces.On November 11, 1919 U.S. President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the first Armistice Day. November 11th represented the end of major hostilities from the First World War, when hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Armistice Day used to be celebrated in the United States, until it was renamed Veteran's Day in 1954. Armistice Day and Remembrance Day are still celebrated in other countries.This week I simply ask -- regardless of the country you live in -- please take a brief moment of silence to remember those who have come before you, and have sacrificed themselves to protect our future and make our world a safer place.Thank you!I would also encourage each of you to consider doing something nice to a veteran this week. Whether it is just giving them a compliment or buying them a cup of coffee the next time you're at the coffee shop, let's give thanks to their service.Guests and members, thank you each for being here. Member Spotlight: Chris Cochrane
Our members are the lifeblood of our club, and we are thrilled to have so many community and global leaders in our Rotary family! This weekly segment is dedicated to a different member every week.
This week's spotlight is a different structure than our previous spotlights. Club member Chris Cochrane is a professional film and TV producer based in Canada. Chris submitted three of his video works as suggested content for this week's meeting due to Veteran's Day and Remembrance Day.While the videos may be geared for Remembrance Day from a Canadian perspective, they are fitting for the week. World of Rotary: A Rotary Conference on a Cruise
Rotary is a 1.2 million member organization that exists in over 165 countries. This segment is dedicated to sharing a story or an update of what is going on in the global world of Rotary. This week we are featuring President Mitty's recent experience at a Rotary Conference that was on a cruise!
From President Mitty:
"Some 12 years ago when I had first joined the Rotary family as an Interactor, I never dreamt that Rotary would allow me to travel the world, let alone on a cruise to the Bahamas. This past weekend, I had the distinct pleasure of being invited as a guest speaker at the Rotary District 7730 Conference that happened on a cruise from Florida to the Bahamas! It was my first time on a cruise, first time in the Bahamas, and also my first time attending a Rotary conference that was on a cruise!
District 7730 is Northeastern North Carolina, and the last time they had a conference on a cruise was in the early 2000s. Every Rotary conference I travel to and attend, I always walk away with more ideas, wisdom, and friendships. It's these type of international experiences that I believe makes Rotary so unique. It's when you go on Rotary travel experiences outside of your home district that you are really exposed to how international Rotary is. This is one of the main reasons why I continue to go to Rotary International Conventions year after year. (This upcoming year is in Atlanta, Georgia in June -- I hope to see many of you there!)
I want to encourage each of you to consider connecting with Rotary the next time you travel. Or if you are looking for an excuse to travel, Rotary might be able to fill that need for you. From hands-on service events in other countries to conferences on cruises, the world is your oyster when you are a Rotarian!"

Youth Service: Update from KIPP San Jose Interact
This segment is curated by our club's Youth Service Chair, Yvonne Kwan, and is dedicated to providing updates about Interact! Interact is one of Rotary's youth programs and is a community service club for ages 12 through 18.
Last week was World Interact Week, and we reached out to the club officers at Interact Club of KIPP San Jose Collegiate Prep to ask them for a video update on how their club is doing! For our guests and newer members, KIPP San Jose Interact Club is sponsored by our Rotary club!Every year we help send two of their leaders to the annual Interact Presidents Winter Retreat (PWR) and the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp! Our club is also available to their club as mentors and as a resource.Members of Interact Club, or "Interactors," are the future of Rotary and also the future leaders of the world.

Rotary White Elephant Potluck (Fremont), Sat. Dec. 10,2016, from 10 AM to 2 PM
Members, join us for a white elephant potluck party! We will be eating lunch at a private residence, while we do a present exchange in the form of white elephant! If you have never done white elephant before, just bring a present of your choosing that is completely wrapped in unidentifiable wrapping paper. We will randomly pick up presents, and share what we got!
For our members who are abroad and cannot make it in-person for this event, we would encourage you to be online during this time! We'll have our webcam on and would love to do some story exchanges with you online!

Rotary Wilderness Expedition to Big Basin (Boulder Creek), Sun. Jan. 29, 2016 from 11 AM to 3 PM
Join fellow Rotarians and friends for an adventure expedition into the gorgeous redwood giants of Big Basin Redwoods State Park. We will be meeting at 11 AM (exact location to be announced) and will aim to return to our cars by 3 PM. Please pack your own lunch and water.
