Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Message from President Mitty

A moment in honor of our veterans.

Members and returning guests, it's great to see you again!New visitors and visiting Rotarians, welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley! My name is Mitty, and I am president of this Rotary club. Every week we bring to you a new meeting and a new program on education, innovation, technology, or humanitarian service. We are a group of global and local leaders who love helping make our communities a better place.Veteran's Day falls on this week, and so we recognize all of the brave men and women who have served in our armed forces. On November 11, 1919 U.S. President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the first Armistice Day. November 11th represented the end of major hostilities from the First World War, when hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Armistice Day used to be celebrated in the United States, until it was renamed Veteran's Day in 1954. Armistice Day and Remembrance Day are still celebrated in other countries. This week I simply ask -- regardless of the country you live in -- please take a brief moment of silence to remember those who have come before you, and have sacrificed themselves to protect our future and make our world a safer place.Thank you!I would also encourage each of you to consider doing something nice to a veteran this week. Whether it is just giving them a compliment or buying them a cup of coffee the next time you're at the coffee shop, let's give thanks to their service.Guests and members, thank you each for being here. Enjoy the meeting!

Yours in service,

Mitty Chang,

President

Member Spotlight: Chris Cochrane

Our members are the lifeblood of our club, and we are thrilled to have so many community and global leaders in our Rotary family! This weekly segment is dedicated to a different member every week.

This week's spotlight is a different structure than our previous spotlights. Club member Chris Cochrane is a professional film and TV producer based in Canada. Chris submitted three of his video works as suggested content for this week's meeting due to Veteran's Day and Remembrance Day.While the videos may be geared for Remembrance Day from a Canadian perspective, they are fitting for the week. They're also a great look into some of Chris's work. One of the three has been appropriately selected and embedded below for your viewing.https://youtu.be/2kX_3y3u5UoWe're lucky to have you part of our club, Chris! If you are interested in seeing the other two videos, please feel free to check them out below on your own time:

World of Rotary: A Rotary Conference on a Cruise

Rotary is a 1.2 million member organization that exists in over 165 countries. This segment is dedicated to sharing a story or an update of what is going on in the global world of Rotary. This week we are featuring President Mitty's recent experience at a Rotary Conference that was on a cruise!

From President Mitty:

"Some 12 years ago when I had first joined the Rotary family as an Interactor, I never dreamt that Rotary would allow me to travel the world, let alone on a cruise to the Bahamas. This past weekend, I had the distinct pleasure of being invited as a guest speaker at the Rotary District 7730 Conference that happened on a cruise from Florida to the Bahamas! It was my first time on a cruise, first time in the Bahamas, and also my first time attending a Rotary conference that was on a cruise!

District 7730 is Northeastern North Carolina, and the last time they had a conference on a cruise was in the early 2000s. Every Rotary conference I travel to and attend, I always walk away with more ideas, wisdom, and friendships. It's these type of international experiences that I believe makes Rotary so unique. It's when you go on Rotary travel experiences outside of your home district that you are really exposed to how international Rotary is. This is one of the main reasons why I continue to go to Rotary International Conventions year after year. (This upcoming year is in Atlanta, Georgia in June -- I hope to see many of you there!)

I want to encourage each of you to consider connecting with Rotary the next time you travel. Or if you are looking for an excuse to travel, Rotary might be able to fill that need for you. From hands-on service events in other countries to conferences on cruises, the world is your oyster when you are a Rotarian!"

Just like our grant programs, these benefits are available to each of you but require you to reach out and use them!P.S. Perhaps a club cruise in the future could be in the works for 2017. If anyone is interested, mention it in the comments!

Youth Service: Update from KIPP San Jose Interact

Happy Dollars

Each week we ask our members to share news with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal for this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each other, while giving back to a good cause.

Last week's happy dollars went towards supporting our club activities!

From member Rory Olsen ($15):

"Polio plus please"

From member Brian Liddicoat ($15):

"My kids just go to meet their favorite author (Raina Telgemeier) at a book signing in San Jose. The whole audience got to do a book reading with sound effects. Tons of fun."

From member Martin Fix ($10):

"So much to be grateful for."

Thank you all for your donations last week!

Wondering about what is Happy Dollars?

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)This week's happy dollars go towards supporting our club activities.

So what are you happy about? Share with us below!

Selected Six

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select six comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are six comments selected from last week's meeting about the Rotary Peace Fellowship by Peace Fellow Lauren Coffaro:

From member Shags Shagrin (California, USA):

Mitty - I didn't dress up for Halloween, but Truffle, our sort-of-official Club Rotary Dog did.

Lauren. So sorry that "Cal" - UC Berkeley - pulled out of the Peace Fellowship program. I honor your commitment to Rotary and all that it can bring to the world for peace and understanding. Mitty - good meeting all around, as always! Great humor, Yvonne -- I should share that more often. Your stuff most always gives me a chuckle, and I've been around long enough and been a student/teacher of humor forever, so that's a good thing! Good to hear from Monique (right up the road from me down in Walnut Creek -- but for Petaluma and the Cotati Grade), and Richard -- ROBOTS RULE!!! An amazing demonstration -- an article is going around the US newspapers from AP about how robotics has replaced human labor. Hmmmm...no more paychecks -- is that a good thing or not?“

From member Yvonne Kwan (California, USA):

“Canada just got even cooler -- I love how the Canadian police are issuing these positive tickets to youth! Welcome again, Monique! Richard, I was blown away by the robotics work of your students! I loved seeing a project in action. I didn't catch if you mentioned what grade these three students are in? Lauren, thank you so much for sharing your story with us! I have always had such a great respect for Rotary Peace Fellows. I love how you are aiming to use the arts, dialogue, exchange, and play to promote peace. I can't wait to see what unfolds for you after your program!“

From member Richard Knaggs (South Africa):

“Happy Halloween past! Positive ticketing is such an amazing initiative! Need to speak to some people about this. Welcome Monique. How very sad that Polio has resurfaced in Nigeria. Thank you Lauren, what incredible opportunities this program offers, a bit jealous actually.“

From member Mahmood Khan (California, USA):“Lauren. Your presentation reminded me of Manchester where I went to Study in 1970s. Thanks for a great presentation. cheers“From member Brian Liddicoat (California, USA):“Thank you, Lauren! As an aside, I once visited Bradford (West Yorkshire) for work and really enjoyed that historic city. Hope you are making many lifelong friends there.“From guest Helena Pleinert:"Another inspiring meeting! I learned a lot about the Rotary Peace Fellowships. I am also impressed by the short video about Canadian police giving out positive tickets.

Thank you everyone for attending last week’s meeting!

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!
