Message from our President

Hello members,

This month, we're celebrating and focusing on the Rotary Foundation, for which our club has ambitious goals this year. Every Rotarian recognizes the importance of the Rotary Foundation in funding many projects around the world and making an impact on many people's lives. One of the most impressive aspects of the Rotary Foundation (and Rotary in general) is that it is supported by a global network of Rotarians who are committed to devoting their time, money, and skills to significant cause areas. The desire to serve others unites Rotarians everywhere, but there is another factor that we often overlook, which is friendship.

Friendship is the foundation stone upon which Rotary was constructed, and continues to be one of the most enduring, inspiring values I've ever observed in Rotary. However, what does friendship mean in the context of an e-club? When I first learned about the existence of e-clubs, I immediately realized that this new Rotary concept would have introduced members to a whole new level of Rotarian involvement, which could have had, in turn, an impact on the concept of Rotarian friendship. True friendship is often associated with in-person relations and exchange, but it doesn't matter where and how we meet; it's the type of connection that counts.

So, considering all of these possibilities, my question here is, what does friendship mean to OUR club? The eClub of Silicon Valley has a unique advantage as we have the potential to create and cultivate friendships through our technological and global nature. These characteristics enable us to immerse ourselves in various service opportunities while experiencing new cultures and broadening our global understanding and perspectives. That is why I am a big fan of virtual social activities. Our club has limitless options to be structured around cultural, service, or vocational experiences, which can lead to long-term relationships. Our recent Italy online social was pretty awesome, and representatives from our Hawaii sister club joined us, too! Cecelia and I had a great time touring our members virtually around our neighborhoods, food stalls, castles, and other local attractions. Our Membership Committee is planning more fun things like that, and you're welcome to join too! Actually, if you have a chance to participate in one of our online socials, we'd appreciate it if you could invite your families and friends. Additionally, our Coffee with a Rotarian (CWR) program has just started up again, so take this opportunity to get to know both new and existing members better! Let's try increasing and strengthening our circle of Rotarian friends, and please join me in sharing the belief that e-clubs like ours will help Rotary become more interconnected. Let’s make it happen!

Yours in Service,

Angelica Marotta, PhD

President 2022-2023 Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley

Rotary International District 5170

WEEKLY FUNNY WITH SHAGS

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Steven "Shags" Shagrin!

How Old?

When a new child visited our Sunday school, the teacher greeted him and asked his age. The little boy held up four fingers.

"Oh, you're four," said the teacher. "And when will you be 5?"

The child stared at her and after a few seconds replied, "When I hold up the other finger."

INSPIRATION

Every week we share a short video highlighting innovation, education, entrepreneurship, or whatever we think might inspire you to see the world in new ways.

The Japanese shamisen is a three-stringed guitar-like instrument. In this short video, you'll watch a performance by Masamitsu Takasaki, and enjoy the beauty of the setting where it is filmed.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

Back to Some Interesting Life Hacks

Especially for the home handy-person! Some of these I've used before, but many are new. I really like the last one about making a dish-scrubbing glove!!

HAPPY DOLLARS: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)

Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!

This section is usually updated in the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

Rory Olsen made a $20 donation.
Great weather. Everyone is happy and busy!

PROGRAM: How to Create Dignity Worldwide

SPEAKER: Wendy Bird

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others.

The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley seeks to explore perspectives on service from across the world. The views of the speakers in our programs are their own, and unless stated otherwise, are not necessarily reflective of the views of our eClub nor Rotary International.

If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directly or submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!

Beginning in the Philippines in 2001, this week's speaker, Wendy Bird, started the Pearls With Purpose foundation as a stay-at-home mom to five kids aged 4-12. Her intention? Help create long-term self reliance for disadvantaged women.

The outcome? Over 2.6 tons of clothing, food, educational, and medical supplies have been shipped to over 40 provinces. Over 520 women (many rescued from sex-trafficking) have gone through the micro-enterprise and vocational training program, and 11 co-ops have been established in the Philippines, India, Peru, Cambodia, Thailand, the Dominican Republic and Kenya. Partnering with like-minded organizations (Rotarians, OUR, Mentors International, Believe International and Rising Star outreach etc) has allowed this growth to be possible. She is a firm believer that everyone can make a difference if they lift where they stand.

Ms Bird is known as a Social Impactor, Certified High Performance Coach, International Keynote Speaker and Humanitarian. She has accomplished several bucket-list items such as learning to ski at age 40; riding LOTOJA (a 206-mile one-day race); skydiving over Wallongong Beach in Australia; Hiking Havasupai Falls (Arizona), The Narrows; Angels Landing (Zions) Machu Picchu, (Peru) and Tigers Nest, (Bhutan). She loves planking all over the world despite 51 surgeries!

She designed and published The Purpose Driven Planner, a planner which helps bring purpose and productivity to the forefront of life. Her upcoming motivational book, #PurposeDriven, offers an inspiring look into her life and the lives she has touched around the world. She has also written the children's story, The Purple Dress, which addresses the needs of individuals seeking a more purposeful life and is beautifully illustrated by artisans in the Philippines.

Members and guests, please welcome Wendy Bird!

THE ATTENDANCE SURVEY

Thanks for reading and watching this week’s meeting. You have two last things to do before you’re done.

We have a very short attendance survey below for you to fill out to record your attendance.

Visiting Rotarians, this is how you can get an email receipt to pass along to your club’s secretary as proof that you’ve attended our meeting if you need it for makeups.

Non-Rotarian Guests, we would love to see who is dropping by our meetings! This part is optional for you. If you think you may want to join our eClub at some point in the future, we would strongly recommend you fill out the attendance form as it will improve your chances of success for your membership application.

For all members and guests — we strongly recommend and ask that you leave a comment in our comments area below. Tell us how you enjoyed the program. Ask this week’s speaker any questions you might have. Or just stop by and say hello and tell us where you’re from!

Important: Once you submit the Attendance Survey below, please make sure you see the confirmation message. If you get an error message instead, please try the 'submit' button again, and if that doesn't work, please refresh the page and fill out the form again. Thanks!
