Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!
Here’s a message from President-Elect Tzviatko:
Greetings Rotarians and Guests,This week we have Natalie Small who will be talking to us about Groundswell Community Project and the healing effect of nature. I'm sure you'll all enjoy her talk. This is also the first full week of the month, which is when we recognize our members who have done (and have reported on) their service work over the past month -- see the Service Report section below. I know we have many members doing community service all the time and we often forget to fill out the form. I'm guilty of this myself and I'm making a commitment to do a better job in reporting this going forward! I hope you'll do the same! :)Finally, check out the Announcements section below for more info on the upcoming Rotary 5170 District Conference in case you missed the emails from our District leaders!
Sincerely,
Tzviatko
President-Elect, Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley
Guests, we are happy to have you join us this week!
As we see it, our flexibility as an online, asynchronous club allows a special type of service to Rotarians around the world: we make it easier for anyone to strive for and maintain 100% attendance. That keeps you engaged with Rotary's events and ideas, and provides a moment of inspiration for devoting your creativity, talents, and resources to good causes. You are certainly not required to pay anything in order to attend our meetings. However, if you would like to make a small contribution to our service efforts, you are welcome to do so in our secure Happy Dollars section down the page. This could be what you normally pay at your own club's meetings for lunch, for example. Any amount is welcome, but first and foremost, we're happy you've joined us, and hope you will share with others who we are and what we do to help inspire Service Above Self. And don't forget to fill out our attendance form so you get an email you can pass on to your club's secretary!
Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)
We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”
Happy May! This month is full of cool stuff from National Egg Month to National Salsa Month to National Mental Health Awareness Month. Whatever you honor, may it be the best!
What did spring say when it was in trouble?May Day!!
Which state loves May the most?May-ne!
If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring?Pilgrims!
Weekly Inspiration
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.
Join us for a vegetarian’s dream tour of Delhi. Make room for fruit chaat, frozen desserts, samosas of many persuasions and an omelet made of moong lentils. (Omnivores, you’ll like it, too.)

Through a Rotarian's Lens
Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. In this section Member Keith Marsh shares his incredible photography! If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.
This photo was taken in 2009, but a few years later, what you're seeing, Arch Rock at Point Reyes National Seashore, collapsed and tragically killed a hiker. It's a powerful reminder that nothing is permanent. Value beauty when you see it, and value the people in your life while they are with you.
Coffee With a Rotarian
A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we have Alexandra from Switzerland reporting on a chat with Nate from Nagoya, Japan.
Nate and I met today and for me, it was a very special experience because Nate was my first Rotarian I had an online coffee with ;-) Thank you very much Nate! And also thank you, Rushton, for inviting this cool guy to our club! Nate and I spent great time discussing various topics like the school system in Japan or the Japanese vacation regulation. It was very interesting to learn how different the Rotary clubs are around the world. We particularly compared the Japanese clubs and the Swiss clubs and also talked about the diversity in Rotary or better to say the lack of diversity…There is only one negative thing I can report about – Nate had a job offer in Stuttgart, Germany and he said no! What a pity! Otherwise we would have had another club member from Europe ;-)
We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week! This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.
Rory Olsen made a $20 donation.Life is good.
Brian Liddicoat made a $15 donation. My 13yr old son Richard and I just finished reading "First Man: the Life of Neil A. Armstrong" by James Hansen. Put aside all the interesting technical details of the moon landing: you can learn a ton about being a good human being from this book. If you read the original 2005 version like me, there's a lot of useful new material in the new release. As Richard put it, "that was way better than the movie..."
Monique Ziesenhenne made a $25 donation.I'm happy that as of next week, I will no longer be the interim Community Services Director - they are appointing a permanent one! I'll go back to being the Library Director...AND the interim Assistant City Manager! Excited about this new opportunity. And happy to donate to TRF-Annual Fund.
Share your happy dollars thoughts with us and help with doing good around the world.
Selected Comments
Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.
Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.
Nathan Gildart said:Thanks for that Tzviatko. Pretty impressive what you're doing. I was learning about GETS and PETS from Alexandra when we had CWR. Was nice to have that understanding before you spoke.
Rushton said:
The Rotary.org article about Alex Ritchie was very impressive - I reached out in the hope of getting her to speak to us after watching the video, and before I'd finished the program, she'd written back! Seriously cool. Nan, your comment in the CWR article, "the supreme fabulousness of cats," was one that resonated with me. Great word choice is a wonderful thing.
Tzviatko, your program was great - thanks! I was really intrigued to learn about the WhatsApp-based eclub. Perhaps we can get Tatenda or another member to present to us about their club and its service projects.
Finally, thanks again to all our members who took part in Relay for Life - it's great to know we are striking a blow against cancer!
Vandana Agrawal said:Thank you Rushton’s ‘ Relay for Life’ event efforts.Enjoyed Tzviatko’s presentation on Presidents Elect Training Seminar (PETS) in Harare, Zimbabwe . It was nice to learn that the President Elect took the initiative to attend PETS in Africa.Liked the photo taken by Keith taken Milky Way at Crater Lake in Oregon.Ferheen and Nan your CWR was interesting read.Update from Brett Morey of Surfers Unite Rotarian Fellowship (March 2018 https://www.siliconvalleyro... was nice to watch. I would like to soak in the atmosphere of a similar event along with friends from our Rotary eClub during one of my visits to the Valley in Rotary year 2019-20

Program: Groundswell Community Project
Speaker: Natalie Small
Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week.
Groundswell Community Project is a California based non-profit with the mission to heal, empower, and unite women in the waves through surf therapy and ocean conservation projects. Groundswell brings women from all over the world together who are overcoming abuse, trauma, trafficking, addiction, displacement, depression, and anxiety to diver deeper into self love, ocean love, and sisterhood.Groundswell's founder Natalie Small is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Trainer and Facilitator of First Aid Arts, and received training in using the arts for trauma recovery in Buenos Aires under Graciela Bottini with the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association. Natalie has 10 years of experience using the arts, yoga, sailing and surf as platforms for therapeutic healing and has combined her trainings, expertise, and experiences to build the Groundswell Community Project's 8 week Surf Therapy program. Women from all different trauma stories and backgrounds come together, no longer as their cultural labels but as women united in the process of learning to surf Mother Ocean's waves.
