Message from President Stephen

Hello Eclub Rotarians,

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend! I was at Pismo beach this last weekend and went to hit the sand dunes on an ATV. The heat was a little insane and I have to say this is definitely the first time I've ever received an emergency alert for excessive heat on my phone. I hope everyone else had an amazing Labor Day weekend and was able to stay cool and hydrated. Enjoy this weeks meeting!

Laughing Out Loud (L.O.L.) with our Lady of LOLs

yvonnebubble.png

We believe that laughing a little every day keeps you healthier. Every week we try to share with you something that will make you smile! This section is curated by Rotarian Yvonne Kwan, our club’s “Lady of LOLs.”

From Yvonne: "

Here are some jokes courtesy of my 5th grade class!"

What did one broom say to his snoozing friend?

"Stop sweeping!"

What did one toilet say to another?

"You look a bit flushed!"

Why did the picture go to jail?

Because he was framed!

Weekly Inspiration: How the Japanese Craft the World's Hardest Food

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change. This week we are featuring a video from Great Big Story about Katsuobushi, an essential staple of Japanese cuisine.

Katsuobushi is a unique and essential staple of Japanese cuisine. For the uninitiated, this seafood delicacy amounts to dried, fermented and smoked skipjack tuna that is used as a shaved condiment over many traditional dishes. And while it is ubiquitous in Japan, katsuobushi is not something people make at home. In fact, it takes nearly six months to make, and is most often produced by artisans and small factories. Takashi Suzuki is one such artisan, who has been making the fish product for the past 30 years. In his Yaizu-based factory, he continues to uphold traditional methods of production in the belief that a bit of extra care and attention can make the most delicious katsuobushi.

Have you ever had katsuobushi?

Coffee with a Rotarian

Every month our club members are paired with fellow members and special guests for an exclusive one-on-one coffee session called Coffee with a Rotarian. The idea is simple: spend 1 hour of your time during the month to get to better know a fellow Rotarian! Some of the greatest friendships were spawned that way. Members report on their coffee sessions here.

This week we feature a coffee session between two of our members, Rushton Hurley of Silicon Valley and Angela Hoang of Sydney, Australia!

Here is what Rushton had to say about Angela:

president-rushton-bubble-left.png

"This month I connected with Angela Hoang in Sydney. Angela is a pharmacist and one of our newest members. I am also her mentor in Rotary, and thoroughly enjoy talking with her about service possibilities and what that means for leading a good life! In addition to pharmacy, it turns out that Angela has also spent much of the last decade with a second job of taking bets at a major horse-racing track in her area. The day we talked was one of the biggest in years in Australia, as a celebrated horse named Winx was returning to the track after taking a break. Why is that interesting? That's because Winx won 18 races in a row before going on equine vacation. Winx ended up winning that race by a nose after a slow start, and in getting to connect with cool Rotarians like Angela, I feel like I am a winner, too!"

Here is what Angela had to say about Rushton:

AngelaHoang.jpg

"Over the weekend I had the opportunity to have a great chat with Rushton and talk about what's been going on in his life at the moment. I've already been fortunate enough to speak to him prior to this call because he's my Rotary Club Mentor and he has made my Rotary journey so much easier through his guiding emails and webcalls but also I got to meet him in person when we went to the Brewery catch up in SF earlier this year so this Coffee with a Rotarian session was more of a 'checking in' than a 'meet for the first time' catch up. We thought we'd talk about something cool that we'd done from our respective Summer/Winter and Rushton told me all about an amazing cruise he went on with Norwegian Cruises which was for a weeks and left from Rome, went to Florence, Monaco, Cannes (our Rushton is such a high flyer!), Majorca, Barcelona, Naples and Pompeii. From the sounds of things his cruise ship was quite a behemoth of modern engineering and he and his wife seemed quite enamoured with the cover band on the ship (they saw them every night except one). Rushton also mentioned that the cruise experience was a bit of an 'embarrassment of riches' which I think sums up the whole cruising lifestyle to a tee! Thanks Rushton for a great chat as usual, you should probably post up some holiday snaps so the rest of the club can be equally as jealous as I was hearing about the trip!"

Thank you Rushton and Angela for sharing!

A big shout out  to Tzviatko Chiderov for continuing to chair and organize these Coffee with a Rotarian sessions! If you are not yet signed up for a Coffee Session, please email Tzviatko at tchiderov@gmail.com to sign up!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)

Last week's happy dollars went towards powering our club's projects and service grants.

Thank you to member Brian Liddicoat for his generous $15 donation! Brian had this to say:"Just back from a great vacation in Colorado: saw a 95% eclipse and the kids had a great time. Big props to Mesa Verde NP, Rocky Mountains NP, Durango and Estes Park. Wonderful places."

Thank you to member Rory Olsen for his generous $15 donation to the PolioPlus Fund! Rory had this to say:"Please apply my gift to Polio Plus. Things a trifle wet here in Houston. Personally, outside of no cable and intermittent Wifi, all is well."

Thank you to member Catherine A. for her generous $20 donation! Catherine had this to say:"I am grateful for the eClub of Silicon Valley, whose selection of speakers and video presentations inspire me by focusing on the kindness and goodness of people, each week."

Thank you all for your donations last week!

This week's happy dollars donations will be going to help fund our club projects and service grants!

Happy dollars is also a great opportunity to share with the group about something good that has happened to you, while giving back to a great cause.

So what are you happy about? Share with us below, and help support one of our future leaders!

Selected Six

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select six comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are six comments selected from last week's meeting featuring the program on The First Object of Rotary:

Screen-Shot-2016-10-02-at-10.56.17-PM.png

Member Paul Mosso (California, USA) had this to say:"Governor Mahoney, thank you for the presentation. It was great to hear about your journey through Rotary and all the things that are going on in our district. I'm glad to hear Rotaractors can join a Rotary Club concurrently; while I was in Rotaract especially my last year or so I would've enjoyed being part of both."

Screen-Shot-2016-09-12-at-12.54.01-AM.png

Member Brett Sham (Sydney, Australia) had this to say:"Nate and Andrew, sounds like you guys had an awesome catch up! Governor Orrin, thanks for visiting our club. Great presentation - you picked up on points that I hear too often when I visit Rotary clubs - many people are all too familiar with Rotary, but how do we help them understand what Rotary is and experience it and also how do we make Rotary work for them in the time they have available to give. I also loved your focus on youth programs and how vital they are to our future and the need to better engage with them and harness the energy and enthusiasm of their participants - something I've been passionate about for years. I doubt I'd be a Rotarian today if it wasn't for my experience in RYLA and Rotaract and all the opportunities those programs provided me."

Screen-Shot-2017-09-05-at-10.52.13-AM.png

Member Raquel D. Juncal (Mexico) had this to say:"DG Orrin, thanks for your presentation! Great to learn about your experience with Rotary! The "8000 Kilometers in Peace" video... amazing!!!"

Screen-Shot-2016-09-12-at-1.00.44-AM.png

Member Shags Shagrin (California, USA) had this to say:"Thanks for a great Governor's Visit presentation, Orrin! I loved hearing the name of that project, Operation Snowflake! I was a coordinator of a project with the same name for over 25 years in Ohio (not through Rotary, but B'nai B'rith) where we placed Jewish volunteers at local hospital Info Desks and Gift Shops on Christmas Day so that Christian volunteers could be with family but the services were still available. It's now been over 40 years and is still going on in Youngstown, Ohio. Your mention of "real money" brought to mind a quote attributed to Senator Everett Dirksen: "A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money." And the bit about Youth Services, which is so vital to the future of Rotary. That's how I started -- as a legacy Rotarian, grand-nephew of the first person to be approaching 50 years of perfect attendance before passing at 49.5 years. His Club even met at the hospital for three weeks so they could bring him down from his room to the meeting, but then he passed I was a Summer Youth Exchange Program participant for Rotarian's children at age 16, and had worked with the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards at the District Level for both 6650 and 5160 for over two decades. Rotary's in my blood, and obviously in yours, too!"

Screen-Shot-2016-09-05-at-12.20.05-PM.png

Member Ferheen Abbasi (Osaka, Japan) had this to say:"Thank you so much for your presentation, Governor Mahoney! Yay for fellow South Bay resident!! Your story was wonderful to listen to and I'm excited to see what you do in the future with Rotary!"

Screen-Shot-2016-08-21-at-3.26.49-PM.png

Member Leanza Tupfer (California, USA) had this to say:"Amazing to see Mash and Tachiflower still dancing youthfully at age 60 :)"

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!

Program: The Little Spoon - The Story of An Epic Elven Year Old Entrepreneur

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, education, technology, and humanitarian service. This week our guest speaker is a 11-year old entrepreneur behind the business The Little Spoon.

Aidan Doherty is an 11 year old student at Beaverbank Monarch Elementary School. In 2016 he won a prestigious Leadership award for his hard work on the provincial champion football team, The Dragons, from Football Nova Scotia. His teammates call him the Honey Badger, but on sunny Saturdays in the summertime, he is a sharply dressed, driven entrepreneur. Mentored by Lacey and Ciaran Doherty of The Middle Spoon, Aidan is learning every aspect of what it takes to run a business. He would love to tell you all about it as he mixes his delicious "lemonAidan" and serves up a decadent cookie dough sundae with your choice of toppings!

Members and guests, please join me in welcoming Aidan!
