I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend! I was at Pismo beach this last weekend and went to hit the sand dunes on an ATV. The heat was a little insane and I have to say this is definitely the first time I've ever received an emergency alert for excessive heat on my phone. I hope everyone else had an amazing Labor Day weekend and was able to stay cool and hydrated. Enjoy this weeks meeting!

Weekly Inspiration: How the Japanese Craft the World's Hardest Food
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change. This week we are featuring a video from Great Big Story about Katsuobushi, an essential staple of Japanese cuisine.
Katsuobushi is a unique and essential staple of Japanese cuisine. For the uninitiated, this seafood delicacy amounts to dried, fermented and smoked skipjack tuna that is used as a shaved condiment over many traditional dishes. And while it is ubiquitous in Japan, katsuobushi is not something people make at home. In fact, it takes nearly six months to make, and is most often produced by artisans and small factories. Takashi Suzuki is one such artisan, who has been making the fish product for the past 30 years. In his Yaizu-based factory, he continues to uphold traditional methods of production in the belief that a bit of extra care and attention can make the most delicious katsuobushi.

Coffee with a Rotarian
Every month our club members are paired with fellow members and special guests for an exclusive one-on-one coffee session called Coffee with a Rotarian. The idea is simple: spend 1 hour of your time during the month to get to better know a fellow Rotarian! Some of the greatest friendships were spawned that way. This week we feature a coffee session between two of our members, Rushton Hurley of Silicon Valley and Angela Hoang of Sydney, Australia!
Here is what Rushton had to say about Angela:
"This month I connected with Angela Hoang in Sydney. Angela is a pharmacist and one of our newest members. I am also her mentor in Rotary, and thoroughly enjoy talking with her about service possibilities and what that means for leading a good life! In addition to pharmacy, it turns out that Angela has also spent much of the last decade with a second job of taking bets at a major horse-racing track in her area. The day we talked was one of the biggest in years in Australia, as a celebrated horse named Winx was returning to the track after taking a break. Why is that interesting? That's because Winx won 18 races in a row before going on equine vacation. Winx ended up winning that race by a nose after a slow start, and in getting to connect with cool Rotarians like Angela, I feel like I am a winner, too!"
Here is what Angela had to say about Rushton:
"Over the weekend I had the opportunity to have a great chat with Rushton and talk about what's been going on in his life at the moment. I've already been fortunate enough to speak to him prior to this call because he's my Rotary Club Mentor and he has made my Rotary journey so much easier through his guiding emails and webcalls but also I got to meet him in person when we went to the Brewery catch up in SF earlier this year so this Coffee with a Rotarian session was more of a 'checking in' than a 'meet for the first time' catch up. We thought we'd talk about something cool that we'd done from our respective Summer/Winter and Rushton told me all about an amazing cruise he went on with Norwegian Cruises which was for a weeks and left from Rome, went to Florence, Monaco, Cannes (our Rushton is such a high flyer!), Majorca, Barcelona, Naples and Pompeii. From the sounds of things his cruise ship was quite a behemoth of modern engineering and he and his wife seemed quite enamoured with the cover band on the ship (they saw them every night except one). Rushton also mentioned that the cruise experience was a bit of an 'embarrassment of riches' which I think sums up the whole cruising lifestyle to a tee! Thanks Rushton for a great chat as usual, you should probably post up some holiday snaps so the rest of the club can be equally as jealous as I was hearing about the trip!"

Friday, September 15 - Drinks, Food, and Art at the Palo Alto Arts Center
Come join fellow club members on Friday, September 15, 2017 starting at 7 PM for food and drinks at the Palo Alto Arts Center's annual fundraiser! In addition to socializing with your fellow Rotarians and visiting the new Play art exhibit, you can support an amazing community effort to keep the arts alive! This event officially ends at 10 PM, but you can come and go as you please! The Palo Alto Arts Center is located at 1313 Newell Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94303. Tickets are not required.

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)

Member Shags Shagrin (California, USA) had this to say:"Thanks for a great Governor's Visit presentation, Orrin! I loved hearing the name of that project, Operation Snowflake! I was a coordinator of a project with the same name for over 25 years in Ohio (not through Rotary, but B'nai B'rith) where we placed Jewish volunteers at local hospital Info Desks and Gift Shops on Christmas Day so that Christian volunteers could be with family but the services were still available. It's now been over 40 years and is still going on in Youngstown, Ohio. Your mention of "real money" brought to mind a quote attributed to Senator Everett Dirksen: "A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money." And the bit about Youth Services, which is so vital to the future of Rotary. That's how I started -- as a legacy Rotarian, grand-nephew of the first person to be approaching 50 years of perfect attendance before passing at 49.5 years. His Club even met at the hospital for three weeks so they could bring him down from his room to the meeting, but then he passed I was a Summer Youth Exchange Program participant for Rotarian's children at age 16, and had worked with the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards at the District Level for both 6650 and 5160 for over two decades. Rotary's in my blood, and obviously in yours, too!"

Program: The Little Spoon - The Story of An Epic Elven Year Old Entrepreneur
Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, education, technology, and humanitarian service. This week our guest speaker is a 11-year old entrepreneur behind the business The Little Spoon.
Aidan Doherty is an 11 year old student at Beaverbank Monarch Elementary School. In 2016 he won a prestigious Leadership award for his hard work on the provincial champion football team, The Dragons, from Football Nova Scotia. His teammates call him the Honey Badger, but on sunny Saturdays in the summertime, he is a sharply dressed, driven entrepreneur. Mentored by Lacey and Ciaran Doherty of The Middle Spoon, Aidan is learning every aspect of what it takes to run a business. He would love to tell you all about it as he mixes his delicious "lemonAidan" and serves up a decadent cookie dough sundae with your choice of toppings!
