Last Tuesday was National Pizza day in case no one was aware! I just thought I'd briefly mention it in my message this week since I love pizza so much. Now moving on to the important stuff, our district is hosting their annual Avenue of Service event
on October 5, 2017, Thursday, at the Biltmore Hotel & Suites in Santa Clara from 4:30 pm to 9:00 pm
. Connect with Rotary leaders and learn about the power of service in Rotary District 5170 through educational forums and a major project fair. Special guest speaker is RI Director, Zone 25/26 John Matthews.
It would be great to have a group from our club attend together! Feel free to shoot me an email if any of you guys are interested in going so that I can coordinate and let everyone know who from our club will be there!

Weekly Inspiration: Amputees Climb a Volcano for a Cause
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change. This week we are featuring a video from Great Big Story about a group of amputees who came together to climb a volcano for a cause.
In 2010, while serving in Afghanistan, U.S. Marine Corporal Kionte Storey lost his leg to an IED. Once back in the States, Storey battled PTSD and depression as he tried to adjust to life as an amputee. Luckily, he found a positive method for channeling those dark feelings: mountain climbing. Just two years after his injury, in January 2013, Storey summited Mt. Vinson—the highest peak in Antarctica. That experience changed his life, and since then, he’s been climbing mountains around the world. Now in Ecuador, Storey is leading a group of fellow amputees on an attempt to summit a nearly-19,000-foot volcano. Their goal is to raise awareness for ROMP—an organization that provides prosthetic and orthotic care to under-served populations.

Coffee with a Rotarian
Every month our club members are paired with fellow members and special guests for an exclusive one-on-one coffee session called Coffee with a Rotarian. The idea is simple: spend 1 hour of your time during the month to get to better know a fellow Rotarian! Some of the greatest friendships were spawned that way. Members report on their coffee sessions here.

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)
Last week's happy dollars went towards powering our club's projects and service grants.
Thank you to member Rory Olsen for his generous $15 donation! Rory had this to say:"My wife, cats and I all lived through the flood following Harvey. The first story of our house was trashed. But we had flood insurance. It may be months before our day to day routine returns to normal."
Thank you to member Monique Ziesenhenne for her incredibly generous $100 donation! Monique had this to say:"I'm super happy to report I successfully defended my dissertation on Friday, Sept. 1. Yep, I'm now a PhD. Thanks to everyone who sent good thoughts and best wishes on the day! Please contribute to the Annual Fund!"

Member Leanza Tupfer (California, USA) had this to say:"I have always admired the emphasis of Japanese cuisine being on the process to create its' foods, as well as quality and freshness of flavor as seen in sushi and nigiri. It's a long process to create katsuobushi but I admire the artisans dedicated to this craft, as it is truly unique within Japanese cuisine and is a shaved condiment over many traditional dishes."

I loved your elegant street stand with the white tablecloth, your dapper and quirky clothing choices, and of course, your idea for the chocolate chip cookie dough sundae. Yum! Congrats on your engineering educational goals as well! Question: How many sets of suspenders do you own and which are your favorites? Yes, Meyer lemons are super, but I liked your raspberry and strawberry additions, which sound really delicious. My prediction is that you will become a food engineer! ;-) Angela, I want to see Rushton's Cruise photos also! (Hint hint, nudge nudge.) The Katsuobushi (dried Bonito) story reminded of my grandmother's Bakalar. Salted, dried cod is cooked and drained, then mixed with garllic, olive oil, bay leaves and potatoes. I have a similar dish, Bacalau, at a local Portuguese restaurant, to avoid the long process of making it myself! I'm looking forward to trying katsuobushi. Laura Bradbury, a former Rotary Youth Exchange student, began a wonderful series of autobiographical books when she was unexpectedly sent to Burgundy, France for the RYE program. Her exploits may not be typical of every student in the program, particularly since she met her future husband on that first Rotary-sponsored adventure, then spend most of her time learning about French wine and food. The first book in her five-book series is titled: MY GRAPE YEAR. http://www.laurabradbury.co... (She is working on a related cookbook this year.)"

Dr. Devorah Heitner, an expert on young people and how they consider and immerse themselves in our digital world. If you think there are no problems with kids and devices, she'll make you think again. If you think kids are turning to mush in front of screens, she'll help you see the opportunities to mentor kids that parents and teachers now have connected to their use of technology.
