Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from President Andrew:

Greetings Members and Guests,This is my first meeting as President of this wonderful Rotary family. As I write this, I'm sitting in a cafe overlooking a rock climbing gym and it is the day after the 2018 Rotary International Convention where 25,000 Rotarians gathered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to share stories about the wonderful work they're doing. Watching climbers don their harnesses and chalk their hands as they look up and plan their path, I can't help but think about what is to come for us and the service we can provide. Like these climbers, we have all the equipment necessary to ascend to greater heights. Our membership committeed to service both locally and abroad spans the globe. We are almost a microcosm of Rotary International as a whole. We have the infrastructure to begin partnerships and service projects on a global scale. We have the chalk, the shoes, and the harness. But most importantly, like rock climbers, we have each other to advise, support our weight, and ensure our success.I look forward to the end of the Rotary year on June 30, 2019, when President-elect Tzviatko gears up to begin his term and all of us, as a club, get to reflect on the good we've done together. I hope it will surprise and inspire us.

Sincerely,

Andrew Taw,

PresidentRotary eClub of Silicon Valley

Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”

I spent the last week in Toronto for the Rotary International Convention. For most of the week, I also had the privilege of overseeing a group of Interactors from our district -- this week's jokes are courtesy of our young leaders.

Why do kangaroos hate when it's raining?Because their kids play inside.

Why did the scarecrow get hired for the job?Because he was outstanding in his field.

I'm reading a book about anti-gravity.It's hard to put down!

Weekly Inspiration

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

How do you cool a building without air conditioning? Using an approach called biomimicry, see how architect Mick Pearce harnessed the ingenuity of termites to design a natural cooling system for the largest commercial building in Zimbabwe.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=620omdSZzBs

Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Andrew from Oakland, CA, USA reporting on his chat with Rebecca from Sydney, Australia.

Bec and I managed to meet up in Toronto during the 2018 Rotary International Convention. Although we had corresponded via Zoom and e-mail, this was the first time we had met in person! I am humbled to have been able to chat with Bec. She is incredibly passionate about serving communities in need with her work in Corporate Social Responsibility for Johnson and Johnson. She thinks deeply and critically about strategies that can make the most effective impact and I'm glad she has stepped up to help our club work on a bit of strategic planning. She is also a bit of a Rotary celebrity since both Bec and Raquel participated in a panel discussion in front of 25,000 Rotarians!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!

Member Rory Olsen made a $20 donation. Here is what he had to say:My cat, Jazzmine enjoyed her week of fame. Please apply my gift to Polio Plus.

Member Monique Ziesenhenne made a $20 donation. Here is what she had to say:Just back from the American Library Association Annual Conference, where I was inaugurated as the President of the Public Library Association for 2018-19!

Member Rushton Hurley made a $20 donation. Here is what he had to say:I'm happy to hand over the programs committee to Roger, who is laser-focused on making it a system that will work well for now and in the future. Kudos to him and to the others joining the committee (Monique, Bec, Ferheen, Andrew, Maxi, and Yvonne) for helping our club be one that is known for sharing the fascinating and inspiring!

Member Brian Liddicoat made a $15 donation. Here is what he had to say:Back from a great short "Twin Peaks" themed vacation with my son in Snoqualmie, WA. Along with trying to rescue Agent Cooper from the Black Lodge, we also biked on abandoned mountain railroads and enjoyed hiking in Mt Rainier NP. Love this place.

Share your happy dollars thoughts with us and help with doing good around the world.

Selected Comments

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.

Hugh Lavery said:Well done Team. I heard about your Club at General Session and also the Breakout session "Membership Models for the Future of Rotary" at the International Convention in Toronto and decided to follow up and see how it works. It was excellent to attend this weeks meeting since it gave an excellent summary of your last years activities. I also met Mitty Chang in Western Australia earlier this year at our District 9455 Conference in April. He was great! My mind was firing with ideas from the inspiration you provide and I have shared your Club details with my daughter and son-in-law, both Rotaractors in Gosnells Club in District 9465, in Western Australia theyare ready for Rotary and I think the eClub approach is the way to go for them. So, well done. Good Job ( PDG Hugh Lavery)

Tanya Martin said:I have enjoyed Coffee With a Rotarian because you get a chance to see what you have in common with others such as shared interests. It also gives you a contact person if you are interested in something specific. For example, if someone states that they travel extensively, you can ask the person for some travel hacking tips. I am new to Rotary, so I am looking forward to an exciting, service-filled year.

Heather Shaw said:Great overview of the year. Thanks Stephen for leading us this year and looking forward to Andrew's ideas. I am loving how there has been an influx of interest since the convention

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!

Program: Building a Local Fundraiser

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, education, technology, and humanitarian service.

This week's speaker, Chad Hooker, has lived in Half Moon Bay, California, for the past 42 years. He joined the Board of Directors at the Coastside Adult Day Health Center in the town in 1984. About five years later, when he was President of the Board, an effort was undertaken to establish a fundraiser of adequate scale to build a Guardian Fund, the aim of which to backstop the organization's annual budgeting process. The initiation and building of the Pacific Coast Dream Machines event required many things, but the single most important was a deeply committed individual who would take the time and demonstrate the enthusiasm to make it succeed. Often, the effort at fundraising for a non-profit is seen as too difficult when writ large, thus setting the bar lower and not meeting the organization's goal and needs. With Dream Machines, the opposite occurred. The founder, Bob Senz, envisioned a big deal, so he set out to create just that. He reached directly into our small town for the pool of volunteers needed to pull off the many pieces of the event, and this level of leadership is often the crucial piece to success in large-scale, local fundraising. For PCDM, Bob had the wild ideas of a show featuring cars of every type and vintage, airplanes, motorcycles, drag boats, steam engines, food, music, plane rides, kids attractions, and whatever else anyone could think of as their own "dream machine."Members and guests, please welcome Chad Hooker!

You can learn more about Pacific Coast Dream Machines at this page:https://dreammachines.miramarevents.comShare your thoughts or ask our speaker a question in the comments at the bottom of this meeting page!

Upcoming Program Recording Schedule

All of our guest speakers and programs are recorded live online over Zoom video conference. We welcome members and guests to join us in one of these upcoming recordings. Recordings are approximately 30 minutes long and are subject to change without notice.

Our online video conference room link for these recordings is always https://zoom.us/j/5104080000. You are welcome to join us! Please note the timezone for all recordings are listed for San Francisco, California, USA time (Pacific Time).

You’re Almost Done! One last thing: The Attendance Survey…

Thanks for reading and watching this week’s meeting. You have two last things to do before you’re done. First, we have a very short attendance survey below for you to fill out to record your attendance.

Visiting Rotarians, this is how you can get an email receipt to pass along to your club’s secretary as proof that you’ve attended our meeting if you need it for makeups.

Non-Rotarian Guests, we would love to see who is dropping by our meetings! This part is optional for you. If you think you may want to join our eClub at some point in the future, we would strongly recommend you fill out the attendance form as it will improve your chances of success for your membership application.

More importantly, for all members and guests — we strongly recommend and ask that you leave a comment below in our comments area below. Tell us how you enjoyed the program. Ask this week’s speaker any questions you might have. Or just stop by and say hello and tell us where you’re from!
