Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!
Here’s a message from President Andrew:
Greetings Members and Guests,This is my first meeting as President of this wonderful Rotary family. As I write this, I'm sitting in a cafe overlooking a rock climbing gym and it is the day after the 2018 Rotary International Convention where 25,000 Rotarians gathered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to share stories about the wonderful work they're doing. Watching climbers don their harnesses and chalk their hands as they look up and plan their path, I can't help but think about what is to come for us and the service we can provide. Like these climbers, we have all the equipment necessary to ascend to greater heights. Our membership committeed to service both locally and abroad spans the globe. We are almost a microcosm of Rotary International as a whole. We have the infrastructure to begin partnerships and service projects on a global scale. We have the chalk, the shoes, and the harness. But most importantly, like rock climbers, we have each other to advise, support our weight, and ensure our success.I look forward to the end of the Rotary year on June 30, 2019, when President-elect Tzviatko gears up to begin his term and all of us, as a club, get to reflect on the good we've done together. I hope it will surprise and inspire us.

Coffee With a Rotarian
A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we have Andrew from Oakland, CA, USA reporting on his chat with Rebecca from Sydney, Australia.
Bec and I managed to meet up in Toronto during the 2018 Rotary International Convention. Although we had corresponded via Zoom and e-mail, this was the first time we had met in person! I am humbled to have been able to chat with Bec. She is incredibly passionate about serving communities in need with her work in Corporate Social Responsibility for Johnson and Johnson. She thinks deeply and critically about strategies that can make the most effective impact and I'm glad she has stepped up to help our club work on a bit of strategic planning. She is also a bit of a Rotary celebrity since both Bec and Raquel participated in a panel discussion in front of 25,000 Rotarians!

Kwan, YvonneIn junction with Rotary District 5170's Rotary Community Day of Service, I worked with Rise Against Hunger and other fellow members of the Rotary family to pack over 11,000 meals for families in Cambodia.

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! I heard about your Club at General Session and also the Breakout session "Membership Models for the Future of Rotary" at the International Convention in Toronto and decided to follow up and see how it works. It was excellent to attend this weeks meeting since it gave an excellent summary of your last years activities. I also met Mitty Chang in Western Australia earlier this year at our District 9455 Conference in April. He was great! My mind was firing with ideas from the inspiration you provide and I have shared your Club details with my daughter and son-in-law, both Rotaractors in Gosnells Club in District 9465, in Western Australia theyare ready for Rotary and I think the eClub approach is the way to go for them. It also gives you a contact person if you are interested in something specific. For example, if someone states that they travel extensively, you can ask the person for some travel hacking tips. I am new to Rotary, so I am looking forward to an exciting, service-filled year.

Program: Building a Local Fundraiser
Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, education, technology, and humanitarian service.
This week's speaker, Chad Hooker, has lived in Half Moon Bay, California, for the past 42 years. He joined the Board of Directors at the Coastside Adult Day Health Center in the town in 1984. About five years later, when he was President of the Board, an effort was undertaken to establish a fundraiser of adequate scale to build a Guardian Fund, the aim of which to backstop the organization's annual budgeting process.The initiation and building of the Pacific Coast Dream Machines event required many things, but the single most important was a deeply committed individual who would take the time and demonstrate the enthusiasm to make it succeed. Often, the effort at fundraising for a non-profit is seen as too difficult when writ large, thus setting the bar lower and not meeting the organization's goal and needs. With Dream Machines, the opposite occurred.The founder, Bob Senz, envisioned a big deal, so he set out to create just that. He reached directly into our small town for the pool of volunteers needed to pull off the many pieces of the event, and this level of leadership is often the crucial piece to success in large-scale, local fundraising. For PCDM, Bob had the wild ideas of a show featuring cars of every type and vintage, airplanes, motorcycles, drag boats, steam engines, food, music, plane rides, kids attractions, and whatever else anyone could think of as their own "dream machine."Members and guests, please welcome Chad Hooker!
