Message from our President
As the 2024-2025 President of our Club, I welcome our members, fellow Rotarians, friends, and guests. Thanks for joining our weekly meeting!
Disasters in Zones 33/34, like hurricanes, earthquakes, and fires are devastating realities. When disaster strikes, Rotarians are ready to assist.
Those outside affected areas can help by donating funds. Together, we make a difference.
However, during the initial phase of any disaster recovery, the most important way to assist an impacted area is through cash donations. In the span of just two weeks, Hurricanes Helene and Milton have caused widespread devastation across Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, leaving countless families in urgent need of assistance. Rotary Zones 33/34 are responding swiftly to the hardest-hit areas, but the recovery efforts will require significant support. Your donation can make a difference in helping these communities rebuild. Please use the link below to contribute to the recovery efforts.
As Rotarians, it’s in our DNA to reach out in situations like this and offer our help. I have been given this information to pass along to our members and friends who may want to send a donation.
Message from Zones 33 & 34 Director Patrick Eakes:
Friends:
I appreciate your concern and prayers as communities across zones 33 and 34 try to survive the next few days before starting the long recovery following Hurricane Helene.
We have established a fund where those who would like to assist recovery efforts by donating can do so via online payment, mailed check, or wire transfer. Information on how to donate is at https://www.rizones33-34.org/disaster-relief/ . Our zones’ organization is a 501(c)(3), so donations are generally tax-deductible. However, Beth would be distraught if I didn’t add the caveat that donors should check with their tax advisors.
We are collecting these funds at a zones level. I will ask district leaders, in cooperation with club leaders, in the most affected areas to submit requests for funding to a group of seasoned leaders (many with significant disaster relief experience) who I will appoint. This group will make recommendations to me to approve grants that will support the efforts of volunteers by providing equipment, tools, storage, mobile storage, etc. Our hope is that our donations can amplify the efforts of volunteers, which seems like a solid Rotary type of approach. When we can, we will leverage district grants and RI disaster relief grants (if/when they become funded again) to further maximize our impact.
Thank you again for your many texts, phone calls, and caring about the residents affected by Helene.
Patrick

Our eClub focuses on Youth and Science Education. This week's program is about engaging and motivating students by connecting with their excitement about space! You don't have to be a science teacher, or even a formal educator. Space education is important to everyone, and informal educators play a key role. Kids don't have to be science enthusiasts either, as space is for writers, artists, and athletes, too. The talk also introduces elements of space philosophy that are critical to our shared future, including matters of ethics, governance, and sustainability. The space economy is booming, and we can help the next generation contribute positively to humanity's multiplanet future.
Dr. Mark Wagner is CEO and co-founder of ARES Learning, a public benefit corporation dedicated to preparing students for humanity's future in space. He serves as the Director of Education Partnerships at the nonprofit Aldrin Family Foundation, which is focused on inspiring the next generation of space explorers, and in a similar role with Slooh, which provides a platform for students to schedule time on telescopes worldwide.
Mark has a Ph.D. in Educational Technology and a master's in Cross-Cultural Education. He also holds graduate certificates in Space Education and Space Philosophy. He is the author of "Space Education: Preparing Students for Humanity's Multi-Planet Future" (2022), which explores both the current reality on Earth and the possibilities for teaching students on the Moon, on Mars, and in deep space habitats.
Please enjoy Mark's presentation.
And now, it is my pleasure to open this week’s meeting!
WEEKLY FUNNY WITH SHAGS
We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Steven "Shags" Shagrin!
Doctor's Toast
A man was getting married to a doctor's daughter. At the wedding reception, the father of the bride stood to read his toast, which he had scribbled on a piece of scrap paper.
Several times during his speech, he halted, overcome with what I assumed was a moment of deep emotion. But after a particularly long pause, he explained, "I'm sorry. I can't seem to make out what I've written down."
Looking out into the audience, he asked, "Is there a pharmacist in the house?"
INSPIRATION
Recently I heard that a case of polio had been identified in Gaza. It reminded me of the work Rotary has been doing for over a decade to put the finishing touches on our End Polio Now effort and eradicate this disease once and for all. Here's a video from another Rotary district that tells some of that story.
