Greetings Rotarians and Guests,This week we have Greg Martin talking about how generational differences can affect hiring practices. As a fairly multi-generational e-Club, I think there will be much that resonate with us. Throughout my life, just as I have greatly benefited from connecting with people of different cultures and backgrounds, I've also been able to find valuable lessons from the fresh perspectives of those younger than me and seasoned experiences from those older. One of the great benefits of being in this e-Club is exposure to many different worldviews. And this has changed my life in both dramatic and minute ways. I hope this has been true for both our members and our guests as well.

For much of his life, Bin Xu was one of 300 million farmers who made up the agricultural industry in China. But Xu always dreamt of flying high in the sky. His dream felt like a distant reality, until Xu decided to take matters into his own hands. Trading in his tractor for a screwdriver, Xu created his first successful aircraft out of his family’s farming equipment. Today, he makes his living building unusual aircrafts for flying enthusiasts throughout China, spending his spare time soaring the sky.

Coffee With a Rotarian
A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we have Rushton from San Jose, CA, USA reporting on a chat with Nan from Penngrove, CA, USA.
Nan and I had a great time with our CWR connection! She is a traveling doctor, describing her life as "insanely flexible," which sounds like a great frame for anyone's life. Next year she'll be going to Fiji with a group of Rotarians from Salt Lake City as part of a mental health project for women there.
Nan joined Rotary as a result of her sister-in-law talking with her about what she finds as wonderful about being part of a world-wide group dedicated to serving others. After looking around, she found us and decided we're an interesting group that matches one of her life goals, which is, in her words, "to surround myself with as many cool people as possible, because they're out there."
And indeed, we've added a really cool person in Nan!

Remember, you’re only taking advantage of the full impact of Rotary when you’re stepping up to get involved.
Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

Speaker: Greg Martin
Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week.
Our speaker this week is Greg Martin, who will explore issues and challenges in hiring practices.Martin currently serves as the Upper School Dean at the Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania. Perkiomen is a 6th-12th grade boarding and day school with 350 students representing 30 nations. Martin completed his undergraduate degree in political science at Wheaton College (Massachusetts), his MA in European history at Western Connecticut State University, and his Doctorate in Educational Policy at Drexel University, where his dissertation focused on the sustainability of the triple-threat model of teacher (teacher, coach, dorm parent) found in elite American boarding schools, and one he has lived personally.Martin also has experience as a university instructor, and his research has expanded to focus on hiring practices in independent schools and how generational differences will impact these practices and systems. These practices address challenges in hiring practices at schools, but apply to other professional environments, as well, and we welcome everyone to continue the discussion for how the ideas play out in your field in the discussion area, below.Members and guests, please welcome Greg Martin!
