Weekly Inspiration
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.
In Hollywood, everything is magic and make-believe, even sounds. When you watch a film that immerses you completely in its world, you’re probably hearing the work of sound artists. If the work is done right, you won’t be able to tell that the “natural” sounds on screen are manufactured with studio props. That's the challenge for Warner Bros. Foley artists Alyson Moore, Chris Moriana and mixer Mary Jo Lang. Theirs is a practice in recreation, one creative element at a time.

Through a Rotarian's Lens

Last week I posted a photo of the Milky Way taken over Caples Lake south of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada. Since I am usually out for several hours at night, I set up a second camera on a tripod and pointed it to the North Star-Polaris. I set this camera to take 100 continuous photos of 30 second each.As the Earth rotates around its axis that is pointed at the North Star, each star creates a star trail that over 24 hours is a complete circle. For 30 seconds, this star trail is only a small elongated exposure. But, then I take these 100 photos taken over 50 minutes and put them in a "stacking" program called StarStak.This program added the photos together and this is the result of adding all this small 30 second exposures. I included the old stump in the foreground for visual interest and to show how low the lake levels had dropped on this once submerged stump.
Coffee With a Rotarian
A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we have Sandy from Fremont, CA, USA reporting on a chat with Roger from Kamloops, BC, Canada.
Today, I had my first Coffee With a Rotarian with member Roger Plested. Even though we have never met, we talked as if we were old friends. Rotary connects you with some of the best people on earth.I learned that Roger first joined Rotary in 1979. He told me about a program that his first club is still involved with. It is a wilderness camp for children at McQueen Lake. There is no electricity or internet there. The camp is open year round. I also learned about the food drive that happens twice a year in Kamloops. Very inspiring how everyone works together.Roger is married and has four children, the youngest is 22. We talked about challenges of health care in our countries. It was very interesting to hear what single payor healthcare is like in Canada.We talked a great deal about one of my favorite things, traveling. Roger took time off during college and hitch hiked around Europe for six months. His favorite country during this time was Austria.I would encourage those who have not tried CWR. What a great way to meet other members from our club.

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

Alexandra Heller Specialist | Germany, Switzerland and RussiaAlexandra was born in Moscow/ Russia and grew up in Nuremberg/ Germany where she obtained A-levels. After her apprenticeship as “Eurokauffrau” at the company Pfleiderer AG in Germany she studied Business Administration in Zurich. Before joining Rotary International in July 2013 as Coordinator in the German/English team, Alexandra worked for the ETH Zurich. Her mother tongues are German and Russian; she also speaks English, and understands French and Spanish. Alexandra is married and has a daughter. Her hobbies are literature and travelling.
