Message from our Club President
You have found your way to the page for this week's gathering of the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley - welcome! One of the ways I work to put ideas together for our club's greetings is to do some research on the date that is the one that begins the week.In looking up June 13th, I found from on-this-day.com that in 1789, "Ice cream was served to General George Washington by Mrs. Alexander Hamilton."My first thought was to skip past that one and look for something a bit more momentous. In 1912 in Missouri, for example, the first successful parachute jump from an airplane happened. There was no extra info on the site about previous, less successful attempts. Regardless, it's a pretty impressive moment of adventurous exploration. But in thinking about the ice cream, it struck me that something small isn't bad at all for thinking about what we do as Rotarians. We talk about the effort to end polio, our work with to address conflicts through the peace scholar program, and much more. However, the little acts of kindness Rotarians do each day may do much more to help a person here and a person there learn about this organization dedicated to making the world a better place.Remember that what you do can ripple forward and inspire those around you to act where others are in need. This week, don't lose the opportunity to start something good, however small.Rotarian guests, we ask that you consider contributing something - whatever for you is the regular cost of a Rotary meal, perhaps - to the efforts of our club. Please choose one of the options below:
Send via our secure Happy Dollars form.
Send via PayPal.
Send via Google Wallet* to: ecsv.rotary@gmail.com
Send via check to the mailing address, below.
* To pay via Google Wallet, you’ll need to log in to your account to donate. Those of you who prefer a more traditional approach can mail a check made out to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley to our treasurer: ℅ Allen Thompson, 13500 Cascade Ct., Bakersfield CA 93314.Non-Rotarian guests, there is no need for a donation from you. As we see it, your job is to simply enjoy what you read and watch, though at the end we do ask that you let us know you were here and also leave a comment letting us know what you think. This club is loaded with folks who love sharing ideas, and we look forward to your sharing yours!
Yours in service,
Rushton Hurley,
President

The Power of Images
An image can capture a story or a possibility in wonderful and powerful ways, and we share one or more great images each week in the hope that it will inspire something for you!
How do you see the world? Sometimes someone gives us a rather different perspective, and the cool ideas that come from it ripple on and on and on.

The Power of Ideas
A great thought can spark a great response in shared word and deed. We share quotes in our meetings for that reason, and out of the hope you'll share something from our meeting with someone else who may need the encouragement.
Everybody talks about wanting to change things and help and fix, but ultimately all you can do is fix yourself. And that's a lot. Because if you can fix yourself, it has a ripple effect.- Rob Reiner
The Power of Balance
We love sharing thought-provoking videos, and here's one that reminds us the power of ripple effects. This video about the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone addresses that impressively.
What you do ripples, as well. A moment of kindness from you may mean someone else has the energy and will to do something for someone else, and so on, and so on. Make it happen! Thanks to member Andrew Taw for sharing this one!
Reminders for Our Members
Club Dues!
Members, you should have received the dues notice from Treasurer Allen in the last week or so. Please go to the dues payment page and get that paid as soon as possible, and if at all possible, before June 20th. It'll help us to have everyone respond quickly!
Our Events & Projects
We hold our meetings online, but we hold regular service projects and social events in the Silicon Valley every month! This section is updated every week with our upcoming events. We welcome guests to all of our events and service projects listed here. Also be sure to join our Meetup Group!
What's Been Going On:
Rotaract, Hong Kong Style
Yvonne Kwan shared some info and a picture from a makeup done last week:
"Visited Rotaract District 3450's District Conference and was blown away by the energy from everyone! (District 3450 is made up of Hong Kong, Macau, Mongolia, and the Guangdong province of China.) Although 90% of the program was conducted in Cantonese, the passion and inspiration that emanated from these Rotaractors could be felt by us all."
"In the attached picture, from left to right: Kelly Wong, Rotaractor who we met at iRYLA in Sydney in 2014; Yvonne Kwan; Mitty Chang; Brett Sham, past District Rotaract Representative (DRR) from Australia Rotary District 9685; Lim-Yan Tam, past DRR for District 3450; Eugene Fong, past District Governor for District 3450; Jermaine Ee, Rotarian from LA5; Kenneth Ong, guest of Jermaine; Joyce Lau, past DRR for District 3450 & past President of the Rotary Club of Lan Kwai Fong (also our gracious host and friend who reached out to us about attending the conference)."
Capturing Culture
Members and frequent visitors regularly enjoy images from our club Camera Czar, Keith Marsh. He's shared several from his photography trips to Cuba, and it's fun to learn about how a community seeks to thank others for kindness. Fun, unless you're a certain pig.
"Here is a photo from my recent Rotary trip to Cuba that illustrates an effective journalist approach for travel photographers. During our visit to the remote village of Corcovado, the town wanted to treat us to a feast to show their appreciation for our efforts to bring pure water to the town. The highlight was this roasted pig. To take the shot, I had several options, but I wanted to make sure that I included the old man who was turning the spit. This added perspective and interest to the photo and makes for a more interesting story."
Keith, we love the lessons - keep 'em coming, and thanks much, as always!
World of Rotary
Every week we bring to you a little snapshot of what’s going on in the world of Rotary. This week’s World of Rotary segment comes from our president-elect, Mitty Chang.
Last week, our members and guests learned a little about Rotary's annual International Convention from our three members who attended, Mitty Chang, Yvonne Kwan, and Stephen Zhou.To give you a little more flavor of what people were doing and celebrating in Seoul, here are two videos created and shared with convention-goers. How much can you learn about Rotary from the images shared?

Was that our own District Governor Elect, Jeff Orth, in blue at the 0:46 mark? Cool!
For Our Members: Service Survey
This section is dedicated for our members to report to us what service projects they have participated in recently. We love giving shoutouts to our members for the good work and the impact they’ve made in their local communities.
It was good fun last week to read about the many things our members have been up to. We tell each other about service opportunities and activities, both small and large, in order to inspire each other. Members, we hope you will share something this week that has been a good moment for you and bringing a smile to someone in need.

Happy Dollars
Happy Dollars is the segment of our meeting where anyone can choose to make a voluntary donation to tell us a short story about something good that has happened to them this past week. Maybe someone paid for your coffee, gave you a ride somewhere, or you got a job promotion.
Another avenue for sharing stories is our Happy Dollars section, where members tell a little about what they have been doing, or what someone they know has accomplished, or perhaps to honor someone who has made a difference somewhere. Guests, you are welcome to toss in a dollar or two, as well! What is shared via the form below is added to the next week's meeting, and please make sure when doing so there is some sort of message to go with it.
From member Nate Gildart ($10):"Shout out for posting the family video in this week's meeting. [If you missed that video, click here to call up last week's meeting and scroll down just past the greeting to, "The Power of Family."]"From member Mahmood Khan ($25):For training programs.
From guest Ken Oku ($10):Today, I've returned from a trip to Japan with my family, where I was able to swim with my father in a spot my family has swam together for generations. I got to walk across the bridge my father and his father walked across for the last time before going to America. It is interesting to read about the many different places this club is actively pursuing positive impacts.F
rom member Linda Tangren ($15):(Not-so-happy thought, this.) Let's keep the Orlando victims and their families in our thoughts and prayers.
From member Brian Liddicoat ($15):Every year in June, my kids' school performs the Hindu epic "Ramayana" at the Mexican Heritage Theatre in San Jose. The whole school (Pre-K to 12th grade) comes together to do the play: really great community feeling. The story is a foundational myth for the Hindu religion, telling the story of Lord Rama's victory over the demon king Ravana. It's kind of like "Dune" set in an Indian universe...From guest Caleb LaPlante ($5):"Our regular club meeting this week featured our youth exchange student, who presented on her time with us over the past school year, as she is returning to Spain soon. She was shy and even scared when she arrived 9 months ago, and now she's confident and funny, and she'll surely be missed. Pretty special to see first-hand how Rotary builds global goodwill and friendship."
Birthdays
While none of our members has a birthday this week, you might stop and ask yourself whether a family member or good friend does. If so, pick up that phone or fire up Skype, and pass along some good wishes!
The Tidbit
Our Tidbit section is designed to help you learn some technology or other trick to help you out in some way. This week, we honor the inner kindergartner in all of us with this search trick.
This week we have a guest Tidbitter. Delaine Johnson is an educator in California's Central Valley, and helps teachers near and far learn about all sorts of technology. This particular item isn't a major educational piece, but it's one we suspect many of those viewing it will welcome.
A Little Humor
We make an attempt each week to prompt a chuckle via a little humor. It is often very little, but the attempt is an honest one, and we hope the good ones are shared the and chuckles ripple forward!
Here's a fun one from LaughFactory.com:
Two factory workers are talking. The woman says, "I can make the boss give me the day off." The man replies, "And how would you do that?" The woman says, "Just wait and see." She then hangs upside down from the ceiling. The boss comes in and says, "What are you doing?" The woman replies, "I'm a light bulb." The boss then says, "You've been working so much that you've gone crazy. I think you need to take the day off." The man starts to follow her out and the boss says, "Where are you going?" The man says, "I'm going home, too. I can't work in the dark."
If any of you try this at your place of employment, please send a report on how it goes. Chances are good it will be shared in this section.
Selected Comments from Last Week
Each week we ask our members and guests to leave comments at the bottom of this page, telling what they thought of the program and the meeting. We hope you, will, as well, as it’s one way of getting to know you and each other better.
Visiting any Rotary club is a chance to learn something about the character and personality of the club's members. It's a reminder that there are Rotarians all over the world with interesting perspectives and intriguing insights, and it's fun to walk away with something new to think about! In our club, we do this via the comments at the end of each meeting, and here are several from last week and the program about Darren Collins and his work in Kenya using puppets to teach children about HIV/AIDS.
From member Heather Shaw (California, USA):"Darren, thank you for the work you are doing. It helps people on so many levels and is entertaining, to boot. I have gone to your website and donated towards keeping this movement going for a future show. Thank you again for your love of puppetry and passion for helping!"
From member Nate Gildart (Tokyo, Japan):"Darren, you're a master storyteller! That was very inspiring and I agree fully that children (and adults) can learn so much via the performing arts. I like to use drama in my social studies classes from time to time, but haven't really thought about having my students create a puppet show (but we will - with our ES students as an authentic audience). Great photo again Keith, and Rushton, thanks for the family video. ;)"
From member Paul Mosso (California, USA):"Darren that was a great magic trick, and it is very true. Thank you for sharing with us this week. Using entertainment to educate is a great idea. Hopefully the ideas stick with the kids as they grow up. Keith, like always, that is a great photo!"
From guest Raquel Juncal (Costa Rica):"If we start from the premise: "Education is our main help," it becomes evident the need to teach programs that allow us to achieve better STD education. Certainly an interesting and fun project to replicate. Excellent work, Darren!"
From member Linda Diekman (Illinois, USA):"Hands up to Darren! What a marvelous program. Loved the intro with your magic trick and how that reinforces your message."
From guest Shabbir Latif of the East Palo Alto Bayshore Rotary Club (California, USA):"Loved the video about the family gathering with the homeless person. Brought tears to my eyes. Bringing puppets to the education world is so creative. I am going to have him speak or show video at our club meeting. Thanks for having me at your club meeting. I love this idea of e-club."
From guest Kristi Govertsen (Oregon, USA):"Darren, this was an awesome program! Rotary + Puppets. Best. Combo. EVER. I hope your foot heals quickly! (Kristi Govertsen via Portland, OR (D5100) and Missoula, MT (D5390))"
From member Chris Cochrane (Ontario, Canada):"Congrats Keith!. Awesome presentation. Love the ropes used in the beginning. Shows that even though we're all different, we're all the same in the end."
From member Keith Marsh (California, USA):"Wonderful and entertaining program on a creative way to educate our children thanks to Darren. Love the Tidbit on God Mode that I had never heard about."
From member Rushton Hurley (California, USA):"Darren, this is a great project, and well shows what's possible through the global grant system for putting something powerful in motion. You make Texas proud, amigo! Mitty, wonderful report about the convention. It's amazing to hear that there were so many there. 43,000? Wow!"
From member Tzviatko Chiderov (Illinois, USA, and soon, Zimbabwe):"Darren, this is both one of the most entertaining and most important presentations I've heard recently. Thank you for taking the time to speak to our club. I really liked the process you went through to identify a passion you wanted to dedicate your time to - asking yourself what you like doing, what you're really good at, and what would have the greatest impact. Thanks for the important work that you do. Keep it up!"
The Program
It's our goal every week to share a program from some interesting soul somewhere on the planet making something amazing happen. This week, our own PR chair and Video Czar Chris Cochrane explains how a Rotary club can raise money using online video.
Chris has used video to raise several thousand dollars for our club, and has been hired by various organizations and raised millions of dollars for them using video.Chris has been a video producer/director his entire working life. Starting in the early 1970s, he interned at CITY-TV in Toronto. Four years later, he started his own video production company. In the late 1980s Chris partnered his company with Canada’s Sports TV Network, TSN, to form Dome Productions. With offices in Toronto’s famous SKYDOME, the company grew to be one of the largest TV and video production companies in North America. In 2003 Bell Media purchased Dome Productions, and Chris decided to take two years off to travel and decide what to do next. In 2005 he began consulting and working in the film/TV/video production business through contacts in Hollywood, New York, Vancouver and Toronto.Today he calls himself "semi-retired" and consulting to major Hollywood types on various film and TV projects as well as working on selected video productions that pique his interest.Members and guests, please welcome one of our own, Chris Cochrane!

You’re Almost Done! One last thing: The Attendance Survey..
Thanks for reading and watching this week’s meeting. You have two last things to do before you’re done. First, we have a very short attendance survey below for you to fill out to record your attendance.
Visiting Rotarians, this is how you can get an email receipt to pass along to your club’s secretary as proof that you’ve attended our meeting if you need it for makeups.
Non-Rotarian Guests, we would love to see who is dropping by our meetings! This part is optional for you though.
More importantly, for all members and guests — we strongly recommend and ask that you leave a comment below in our comments area below. Tell us how you enjoyed the program. Ask this week’s speaker any questions you might have. Or just stop by and say hello and tell us where you’re from!
