Addressing Depression in the Digital Age

In briefAI summary — tap to read
Psychologist Candice Thompson discusses how depression manifests in the digital age, exploring its causes, the role of technology in mental health, and practical strategies for support. She emphasizes the importance of reducing screen time, building in-person connections, and approaching mental health with compassion and openness.
Key takeaways
- Depression affects approximately 29% of Americans at some point in their lives, with symptoms including persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, sleep/appetite changes, low energy, and suicidal thoughts.
- Technology contributes to depression through isolation, overstimulation from global news, comparison culture on social media, and constant pressure to stay connected, despite some helpful digital mental health tools.
- Recognizing suicide risk factors—such as hopelessness, social withdrawal, self-harm, and medication changes—allows you to intervene with compassion by asking direct questions and connecting people to resources like the 988 hotline.
- Simple preventive actions include limiting screen time, going outdoors, reaching out to others, and building small momentum through manageable 10-minute goals rather than overwhelming tasks.
- When supporting someone struggling with depression, approach with curiosity and compassion; avoid comparing suffering or jumping to silver linings, and instead validate their feelings by listening without judgment.

Greetings Members and Friends of Rotary e-Club of Silicon Valley. As President of our Club, I want to welcome you all today.
Weekly Funny with Shags
We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Steven "Shags" Shagrin!
Bad at American History
A report says high school students aren't very good with American history.
On a recent test, a majority of seniors thought Lincoln's Gettysburg address was 'ALincoln@gettysburg.com'.
Inspiration
Every week we share a short video highlighting innovation, education, entrepreneurship, or whatever we think might inspire you to see the world in new ways.
This video combines two of our former presentations, with the painter George Lewis and the cleft palate surgeries via Rotary's partnership with AdventHealth. Contact George to get a portrait made for the four-legged member of your family! He's at waterman6960@yahoo.com.
Learn something new
Art Conservation is an Art in Itself!
I've seen short clips of restoration and conservation work on art. This video by Noah Charney tells three fascinating stories.

Club Service: Club Service is one of Rotary’s Avenues of Service.
Club Service allows a member to play a crucial role in performing tasks and activities that contribute to a great club experience for both current and new members. Engaged and active members are vital to the success of the club as they enable the club to offer service to your communities and help attract new members.
President-Elect Mike needs your help!
We are preparing our grant projects planning for the remainder of this Rotary Year, and are looking ahead to 2024-25 beginning July 1. We are finalizing our Projects Committee. Doing Rotary Projects is a big part of why we are Rotarians. To ensure that our club is active and effective in planning and executing our projects; Global Grants, DDF Grands, and our own unique eMini-grants, we need more members to join Cecelia, Rushton, and Maxi in the Projects Committee. Committees are the backbone of our Club - it’s how we get “stuff” done. It’s a great way for all members to be a part of what we do, and a chance for true Rotary Service Above Self. Be Engaged - please let Cecelia, our leader for Projects, know that you want to help be part of our Projects Committee - and have a direct hand in the good work of our club.
Remember, being a Rotarian means more than just being a member, being a Rotarian means you are willing to do Rotary work. Please volunteer! If interested in working on a club committee (Membership, Club Service, Programs, Foundation, Youth Service, Mini-Grants, Budget & Finance) please let President Nick or President-Elect Mike know ASAP!

TRF and EREY - There’s still time to consider your gift to Rotary for the annual TRF Fund. There are several ways to give: outright payment (Check or Credit Card), monthly payments billed to your credit card, allocation to several funds, etc. Our TRF Chair, Phil Dean has already sent by email your pledge and methods for collecting. Have you returned your pledge? Our Club is striving to be designated as “Every Year, Every Rotarian”. Your gift matters, either a small amount or a large amount (that is up to you - we will never tell you how much to give). A portion of our Annual fundgiving will come back to us for our DDF usage.

Happy Dollars: do good by sharing something good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use.
