Message from our President

Greetings Members and Friends of Rotary e-Club of Silicon Valley. As President of our Club, I want to welcome you all today.

WEEKLY FUNNY WITH SHAGS

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Steven "Shags" Shagrin!

The Mystery of the Wooden Spoons

"One day during cooking class, the teacher, Mrs. Jones, was extolling her secrets for preparing perfect sauces. When she ordered us to the stoves to prepare our assignments, she said, "Don't forget to use wooden spoons."

As I stirred my sauce, I contemplated the physics behind the mystery of the wooden spoon and decided it must have something to do with heat conduction. I approached Mrs. Jones to test my theory.

"Why wooden spoons?" I asked.

"Because," she replied, "if I have to sit here listening to twenty-three metal spoons banging against metal pots, I'll go nuts."

INSPIRATION

Every week we share a short video highlighting innovation, education, entrepreneurship, or whatever we think might inspire you to see the world in new ways.

Last week we met Tom, a guy walking all over the globe with his dog. This week, you'll learn a bit about a robot suit for walking into disaster areas or as part of space exploration. Those familiar with the Japanese "Gundam" stories might find this familiar.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

How Do Touch Screens Actually Work?

Charles Wallace and Sajan Saini dig into the science of touchscreens, and explain the difference between the two most common types: capacitive and resistive. I'm truly blown away by the technology behind touchscreens!!

  • Club Service Club Service is one of Rotary’s Avenues of Service.

The role of the Club Service is to perform the logistical tasks that help create a great club experience for both current and new members. Clubs need active, engaged members to provide service to their communities and attract new members.

President Elect Mike needs your help!

We are preparing our grant projects planning for the remainder of this Rotary Year, and are looking ahead to 2024-25 beginning July 1. We are finalizing our Projects Committee. Doing Rotary Projects is a big part of why we are Rotarians. To ensure that our club is active and effective in planning and executing our projects; Global Grants, DDF Grands, and our own unique eMini-grants, we need a more members to join with Cecelia, Rushton, and Maxi in the Projects Committee. Committees are the backbone of our Club - it’s how we get “stuff” done. It’s a great way for all members to be a part of what we do, and a chance for true Rotary Service Above Self. Be Engaged - please let Cecelia, our leader for Projects, know that you want to help be part of our Projects Committee - and have a direct hand in the good work of our club.

Remember, being a Rotarian means more than just being a member, being a Rotarian means you are willing to do Rotary work. Please volunteer! If interested in working on a club committee (Membership, Club Service, Programs, Foundation, Youth Service, Mini-Grants, Budget & Finance) please let President Nick or President-Elect Mike know ASAP!

  • TRF & Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY)

It’s not too late. Have you received and returned your 2024-2025 TRF Pledge Card that was sent via email by TRF Chair Phil?

The winning clubs will earn extra DDF funds to help us in our efforts to make a better world. Remember, our DDF comes back to us through your TRF giving. • TRF and EREY - There’s still time to consider your gift to Rotary for the annual TRF Fund. There are several ways to give: outright payment (Check or Credit Card), monthly payments billed to your credit card, allocation to several funds, etc. Our TRF Chair, Phil Dean has already sent by email your pledge and methods for collecting. Have you returned your pledge? Our Club is striving to be designated as “Every Year, Every Rotarian”. Your gift matters, either a small amount or a large amount (that is up to you - we will never tell you how much to give). A portion of our Annual fundgiving will come back to us for our DDF usage.

HAPPY DOLLARS: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use.

PROGRAM: Making Ophthalmology Optical Diagnostics Affordable and Accessible through Portable/Wearable Devices

SPEAKER: Dr Susana Marcos

Every week we bring you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others.

The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley seeks to explore perspectives on service from across the world. The views of the speakers in our programs are their own, and unless stated otherwise, are not necessarily reflective of the views of our eClub or Rotary International.

If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directly or submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!

Diagnostic devices in ophthalmology inspired by adaptive optics technologies in astronomy have made their way to the clinic in the form of affordable portable or wearable instruments. The Quicksee is an accurate handheld auto refractometer bringing eye prescriptions (the bottleneck to refraction corrections) to remote, underserved areas. The SimVis is a head-mounted binocular visual simulator of presbyopic corrections bringing patients the experience of vision prior to surgery.

Dr. Susana Marcos is currently the David R Williams Director of the Center for Visual Science, Nicholas George Professor of Optics at the Institute of Optics, and Professor of Ophthalmology at the Flaum Eye Institute, at the University of Rochester, New York. She is the former Director of the Institute of Optics at the National Research Council in Spain. Dr. Marcos obtained her Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Salamanca, Spain, and was a Fulbright and Human Frontier Postdoctoral Fellow at the Schepens Eye Research Institute of Harvard University. She is a leading researcher in visual optics, having pioneered multiple technologies of eye optical imaging diagnostics and treatments, including novel IOL designs. She has published more than 200 highly cited publications, is a co-inventor of 26 patents, and participated in two spin-out companies (Plenoptika and 2EyesVision). She is a Fellow of Optica, the European Optical Society, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

Dr. Marcos' work has been recognized with numerous awards including the Adolph Lomb Medal and the Edwin Land Medal of Optica (formerly Optical Society of America), the ICO Prize by the International Commission for Optics, the Ramon y Cajal Medal by the Royal Academy of Sciences, the Alcon Award, the Physics, Innovation and Technology Award by the Royal Society of Physics, or the National Research Award in Engineering by the Spanish Government, the Jaime I Award (the last two presented by the King of Spain).

Members and guests, please welcome Dr. Susana Marcos!
