Kashmiri saffron is the most expensive spice in the world, and for good reason. Found only in a certain region of Kashmir in northern India, farmers have been harvesting the red gold for hundreds of years. For farmer Ali Mohammad Dar, saffron holds a special place in his heart. Passed down for generations, it is at the heart of Ali’s family, helping them thrive, all while adding to India’s culinary legacy.

Imagination and creativity are important elements in the photographic process. This image is from my trip to the Saharan Erg Chebbi Desert in Morocco in 2017. For technical reasons, I was not able to capture the image I was planning for. So, I used two separate captures to create this photo.
Coffee With a Rotarian
A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we have Vandana from New Delhi, India reporting on a chat with Nate from Nagoya, Japan.
Nate is easy to talk to. He mentioned that he was from Canada and was living and working in Tokyo because of his wife Yuka who was pursuing a nursing course in Japan and had recently graduated. He also mentioned about his friend Abha Kalra from Delhi who was pursuing a teachers training course in Japan.Nate mentioned about having visited Bangkok and Bangalore the two cities in which I have lived and worked in. He has also visited Kerela in South India. Nate mentioned about his interest in visiting India again on work / holiday.He mentioned about joining Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley about two years ago and that his dad was a Rotarian.I have requested Naye to discuss with Manuj Mittal our club member from Delhi about a pilot Rotary project for improving quality of education at local municipal corporation of Delhi run schools. Rotaractors of local clubs in districts 3011 and 3012 may be involved in this pilot project. Manuj and the local rotaractors may be requested by him to share there ideas on this project. I am sure Nate would not mind visiting Delhi a couple of times to kick start this project.Nate and I had brief discussion on a few topics- politics, education, economics , immigration, ageing population in Japan etc. We were discussing what is Indian culture. Culture is a set of values , beliefs and practices reflected in the behaviour of a group of people . Having said this my understanding is that there is no one set of values ,beliefs and practices that reflect behaviour of Indians / people of Indian origin living in Canada, America, US etc.

"Hi! Do you have any questions about the club?" - The New Facebook Chatbot on Main Pages. If you have visited any of our non-meeting pages in the past few days, you'll notice that we now have a Facebook Chatbot active on our site. This is one of our new initiatives to try to convert more prospective leads into members, as well as to increase interaction between guests and our club. Messages will be responded to by our social media team. Please note this messenger chat isn't designed for club members. Members, if you still want to contact someone, please direct your notices to the email of the member or the officer you want to reach.
2019 Homepage Refresh! After hearing feedback from members, the webmasters can now say that we have finally gotten around to updating the main hero image on the homepage into something that we believe better represents the global and the digital nature of our club. We'll be periodically changing the graphic throughout the year, as we continue to refresh different parts of our site.
Join page updated! The webmaster team has done a much-needed facelift for the Join page. The start of a new year is the perfect time to share with friends and colleagues our Join page!

eClub vs. Cancer!
Our club annually gets together to support the fight against cancer, and our 2019 effort starts this week - we would like every member of this club to get involved! You can walk as part of our group at the Santa Clara Relay for Life on April 27th, donate to help fund medical research, or honor a friend or family member battling cancer.
As you know from last week, we're in motion to get the entire club involved with our service project helping raise funds for the American Cancer Society to support research to fight cancer. Two weeks ago, members Ferheen and Rushton walked with other volunteers to ask local businesses in Santa Clara to put up a poster to help others learn about the Relay for Life event.
What can you do now? Well, one especially fun way to get involved is to join the group attending the San Jose Earthquakes match on April 6th! Contact Rushton (rushton@siliconvalleyrotary.com) if you (and friends!) are up for a great outing, soccer style!
Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.
Nate Gildart made a $15 donation.Yuka just finished nursing school and I'm so proud of her challenging herself to three successful years of school. She'll be an outstanding nurse and, being a former care worker, she is built for taking care of others!

Program: Human Papilloma Virus

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week.
Ferheen will be presenting an overview of the Human Papilloma Virus. HPV is an extremely common STI - so common that there are 3 million cases of it per year in the US. Mainly asymptomatic, the virus usually leaves the system with no issues. However, there are two HPVs 16 and 18 that are the leading cause of cervical and anal cancers (70% and 95% respectively). Ferheen will be presenting the pathogenesis of HPV, how it is transmitted, diagnosed and treated.
