Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!
Here’s a message from President Andrew:
Greetings Rotarians and Guests,There is always so much to be done and always better ways to do them. This is one reason being a lifelong student is so integral for leading full lives. This is why I'm thankful for our weekly doses of new ideas, information, and stories. This week is no different with Laura Pickel who will talk about how we can use design thinking to solve problems more effectively. As you leave a comment about this week's meeting, please feel free to share some cool tricks you've devised to solve an everyday problem!
Sincerely,
Yours in Rotary,
Andrew Taw
President, Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley
Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)
We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”
February 28 is National Chili Day! This celebration typically falls on the fourth Thursday of February. Here are some jokes to spice up your week!
What does a nosy pepper do?Gets jalapeño business!
What do you get when you cross a chili pepper, a shovel, and a labrador?A hot diggity dog!
I asked the chef to put my small bowl of beans and ground beef back on the stove. It was a little chili.
Weekly Inspiration
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.
Growing up in Lhasa, Tibet, Rinchen Dolma watched airplanes pass overhead and dreamed of one day flying them herself. She had never been up in the air, and no one she knew was a pilot. Now, thanks to a special aviation training program in Suzhou, China, Rinchen’s dreams—and her future—are taking flight.

Through a Rotarian's Lens
Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. Back by popular demand, Keith Marsh's photography will feature in this new section, curated by member Keith Marsh himself! If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.
February is the only time of year to view the Firefall in Yosemite. This phenomenon is not an actual "fire fall", but is created when the sun sets behind El Capitan and the light reflects off the granite walls at the precise angle to backlight Horse Shoe Falls. I waited for over 8 hours along with hundreds of other photographers to capture this image in 2016. It lasted for only 5 minutes.
Coffee With a Rotarian
A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we have Suzanne from Napa, CA, USA reporting on a chat with Rushton from San Jose, CA, USA.
Rushton is a vibrant conversationalist. He just returned from a speaking engagement in the Middle East and it turns out we can catch some of his past speaking engagements on YouTube. He shared amazing technical expertise with me during our conversation. Rushton is a very generous and talented member of our club. What a great time!
We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week! This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.
Rory Olsen made a $20 donation.Weather is nice. Good day!
Share your happy dollars thoughts with us and help with doing good around the world.
Selected Comments
Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.
Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.
ShagsCA said:Thank you to the new slate of officers and board members who step up to handle our Club's leadership needs. As a 2x past Club President, once before the internet and once with it, I know how it can be to herd cats, and it's no easier with an e-Club than with a terra-Club. Congratulations and please reach out for any guidance to the past presidents in this Club
Yvonne: Always a chuckle there. But actually, a power outage would be a "non-current" event! But not as funny...
Love the video about Basma. She had a magnificent way of turning adversity into productive passion. Although people should be able to see through the surface to the beauty within. I had some common clients with an accountant who was badly burned as a child, and he lost fingers, was terribly scarred, and really scary to see -- at first. Look beyond the difference and there is no difference.
And great program this week, Jessie. I'll certainly be steering people to your YouTube channel!
Mark B said:Really interesting to see how the student loan model works in different countries.
I am from Australia and basically student loans for higher education come from the government. The loans are indexed based on the consumer price index once a year. You then pay back the loan based on your salary. The more you earn the higher amount you pay back. If you are below a certain salary threshold you don't have to pay anything back. So definitely a lot less financial stress.
There is a downside though that the government does carry a huge student loan debt.
Nan Herron said:So much amazing and incredibly useful information! Such a force to be able to put together so much info on Student Loans!
Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!
Program: Design Thinking: Design with your User in Mind
Speaker: Laura Pickel
Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week.
Laura Pickel lectures at the Stanford School of Engineering, is a Teaching Lead with IDEO U, and a works as a User Experience Designer at SAP. At Stanford, she develops and teaches courses on a wide-range of subjects – from empowering quiet leaders, to designing for the end of life experience; at IDEO U, she manages and leads the teaching teams for courses on Creative Leadership and Organizational Change; and at SAP she developed and leads workshops for teachers who are looking to bring design thinking into their curriculum. Laura has a BA in Mathematics and Psychology from Williams College and an MA in Learning, Design, and Technology from Stanford.Design thinking is a proven and repeatable problem-solving methodology in which practitioners use empathy to define a problem, create and consider many possible solutions, and prototype and test those solutions until the best concept is found. Developed by the Stanford d.school and practiced by the world’s largest organizations, its emphasis on Human-Centered Design has helped tailor goods and services to the actual needs of real users.During this presentation, Laura will review the 5-step process, discuss ways organizations have used it to address their customer’s needs, and share projects she has run with students. By the end of the presentation, you will have an understanding of what design thinking is, why it’s a process that organizations across the world are adopting, and examples of how it can be used in service-focused organizations.
Members and guests, please welcome Laura Pickel!
