Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from President Tzviatko:

Tzviatko

President, Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley

Guests, we are happy to have you join us this week!

As we see it, our flexibility as an online, asynchronous club allows a special type of service to Rotarians around the world: we make it easier for anyone to strive for and maintain 100% attendance. That keeps you engaged with Rotary's events and ideas, and provides a moment of inspiration for devoting your creativity, talents, and resources to good causes. You are certainly not required to pay anything in order to attend our meetings. However, if you would like to make a small contribution to our service efforts, you are welcome to do so in our secure Happy Dollars section down the page. This could be what you normally pay at your own club's meetings for lunch, for example. Any amount is welcome, but first and foremost, we're happy you've joined us, and hope you will share with others who we are and what we do to help inspire Service Above Self. And don't forget to fill out our attendance form so you get an email you can pass on to your club's secretary!

The Four Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships.Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?

  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”

February 18 is National Battery Day! Here are some jokes to get you charged up!

Does anyone want to buy a dead battery?I'm not charging much for it.

What did the little battery yell when it stepped on a Lego?AAA!

Why are battery salespeople the best? They have the most energy!

Weekly Inspiration

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

For three centuries, farmers living in the remote mountains of northern Turkey have communicated great distances by whistling. It’s a language called kuş dili that is still used to this day, though fewer people are learning it in the age of the cell phone. It’s also known as bird language, for obvious reasons.Muazzez Köçek lives in Kuşköy, and she is the best whistler in her village. Muazzez shows us how she uses varied pitch frequencies and melodies to translate Turkish vocabulary into whistles with meaning.

Member  Spotlight

This week's Member Spotlight is Kelly Ku! Here is what they have been up to lately:

Recently I took a day trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a ski resort town in Bavaria, not too far from where I live in Munich. It’s a beautiful place full of amazing views and plenty of activities. I love it there. On this particular day trip, I was on a mission to visit the Partnachklamm (Partnach Gorge). I heard this gorge is particularly beautiful in the wintertime as large icicles form against the rock formations. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, both sunny and warm (as warm as you can get in winter) with the classic Bayern blue sky out in full force. After a quick 1.5hr train ride, I arrived at the train station in Garmisch. I had just missed the bus which takes you right to the base of the Olympic Ski Jump. Rather than wait for the next bus, I walked by foot and ended up on a geological nature trail called "The Stones of the Alpine Region". I was wondering why there were so many beautiful rocks along the walk! Around 30-40 minutes later I arrived at the base of the Ski Jump. It was really interesting as I had just watched a Ski Jump competition held at this very facility one week before on TV. (Fun fact: The 1936 Winter Olympics were held in this town.)I continued my trek to Partnachklamm. I knew this was a popular destination, but there seemed to be way more people than expected that day. I saw large groups of people, some with custom jerseys that had a wooden sled on them, along with a team name. It turns out I came on the day of the biggest traditional horn sled speed race and the competition was held nearby the Partnachklamm. Everyone was really excited. I knew I had to catch a glimpse of this competition. Luckily, the races began later on in the day so I still had time. Finally I made it to the gorge and it did not disappoint! The water was crystal clear and there were indeed icicles hanging off the rocks, some close enough for you to touch. At the end of the path, you are rewarded once again with a gorgeous view of nature at its finest. I explored the area a bit and then went back through the gorge towards the Horn Sled race. I had a race to catch! If you thought sleds were only for kids, think again. Oh, how I love traveling! Next time I plan to visit Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak.

Through a Rotarian's Lens

Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. In this section Member Keith Marsh shares his incredible photography! If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.

This is the time of year to view the "Fire Fall" in Yosemite Valley. This is a similar photo to one I posted last year. It is not an actual "fire fall", but is created when the setting sun reflects off the granite walls behind Horsetail Falls near El Capitan. It only lasts about 5 minutes if the sun is out and there is water coming over the falls.I waited over 8 hours with about 5,000 other photographers to get this photo.

Learn Something New

This section is curated by members Shags Shagrin and Rushton Hurley and aims to teach our members and guests something new, fun and useful! If you have any ideas on a fun trick or skill you'd like to share please contact Rushton or Shags.

Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Shags from Walnut Creek, CA, USA reporting on a chat with Roger from Kamloops, BC, CanadaWe talked about the things we did with family over the holidays. He went to windy Winnipeg and had a very chilly time visiting with family. Roger's intrigued by the new laws in CA regarding independent contractors in the ""gig economy"" and how that might impact people I work with. He's still recovering from a lower leg injury from last year which has limited his activity and he's missing his hiking. I shared with him photos of my recent X-rays from hip surgery, as I also need to get back to hiking!Though Roger's trying to get back to work, he thinks that Canada may be heading into a recession. For he legal work, needs to upgrade skills and take online courses, plus update office precedents and documents. Though current on Continuing Legal Education, to get back into practice it takes a business plan.Setting up a business model is the key for him and that's what he's been working on. His focus is on Wills, Estates, Incapacity, and Elder Law, being concerned with undue influence by caregivers that put people in financial distress. Lastly, he shared that produce prices have been increasing tremendously in the past year or so up there, 20% or more, and it may continue this year as well. The carbon tax is also increasing prices up there. And that's a wrap!!We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week! This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

Rory Olsen made a $20 donation.I know that this will sound like a typical Texas story, but a week ago, the outside temperature went above seventy, which was very nice for February. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday it got cooler. Then on Friday afternoon thew temperature started to rise. So here again on a Monday afternoon, the outside temperature is in the seventies. My recitation brings to mind the old Texas saying that if you don't like the weather, wait a few hours and tell me if you like that better.

John Dutra made a $5 donation.Proud of my hard working children’s and the blessings the bring to their mother and I.

Selected Comments

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.

ShagsCA said:

Fun meeting! Happy Valentine's Day to all who celebrate it. Karen's scheduled to work, so it's up to me to cook a special dish that goes well later at night. Probably using the hot air fryer!

Mitty Chan  said:

Nick - great job hosting!

Emily - Very cool to hear about the Guatemala Literacy Project! Thank you for taking the time to share the mission of the GLP with our eClub! Loving the photos you shared about Rotarians delivering books. I would love to see our club get involved the GLP, and also with projects in Guatemala. The work your team does I think really reflects some of the main values and focus of our eClub.

Brett Sham  said:

Sarah, welcome to the club!

Emily, thanks for a great presentation. Would be great to see how our club could get involved as it seems very much connected to our focus areas of education and innovation and entrepreneurship by breaking the cycle.

PS Tzviatko - the room you're in looks really nicely done up, like a professional backdrop / set!

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!

Program: The consequences of Rotary's Youth Programs

Speaker: Judson Moore

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week. The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley seeks to explore perspectives on service from across the world. The views of the speakers in our programs are their own, and unless stated otherwise, are not necessarily reflective of the views of our eClub nor Rotary International.

If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directlyor submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!

Judson Moore is an alum of various Rotary Youth Programs including RYLA, Rotary Youth Exchange, Interact, and Rotaract. The course of his life has been greatly impacted by those programs and the Rotarians who supported them. Now a Rotarian himself, Judson reflects on his years of back-to-back once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and wonders how it all came to pass. From Taylor's Swift's private jet to being a White Stripe's album photographer, and from having audiences with the Coptic Pope, to building a media empire in Central Asia, Judson has accomplished more than his 15-year-old self could have ever imagined. He believes these goals came to fruition in large part because he started at it while he was young! A cliche thing to say, but not at all a cliche thing to do. This is the thesis of his new book, Exponential Happiness: How to identify and pursue life goals starting at a young age. In today's meeting, Judson will share with us some of his reflections on how Rotary changed his life while he was young, and provide us some tips that we can each use in the pursuit of our own goals. https://youtu.be/gk8ivCNVVjsAdditional ResourcesYou can download a digital copy of his book here:https://www.judsonlmoore.com/book-rcsv/He now lives in Berlin Germany where he works as a software Product Management professional.More info can be found at:https://www.judsonlmoore.com/about/https://www.judsonlmoore.com/resume/
