Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from President Andrew:

Greetings Rotarians and Guests,As some of you already know, on the week of the 23rd, I got married! It was wonderful to be surrounded by our loved ones on a beautiful day by a pond. The celebration of the beginning of our marriage took place shortly before I turned 30 last week. It has been a celebratory time and I look forward to many celebrations to come.It is important to celebrate both big and small milestones. For instance, our fundraiser on August 11th is not just an event to raise money to do great work. It’s also a celebration of the Youth Service we’ve done and the village it takes to do more. So if you’re available and you haven’t bought a ticket yet, hop over to this link and grab a bite and drink with me and our fellow Rotarians as we celebrate another exciting year of Youth Service.

Sincerely,

Andrews-Sig-on-Trans.png

Andrew Taw,

Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”

I hope to see some of our members at our A Taste of Good fundraiser taking place this weekend! Here are some wine-y jokes to get you in the mood.

I've trained my dog to bring me a glass of wine. It's a Bordeaux Collie.

He said his non-alcoholic wine was delicious.I said he had no proof.

The past, present, and future were in a wine bar.It was tense.

Weekly Inspiration

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

Plastic cutlery has been around for years, widely considered the only choice for cheap, disposable cutlery. Knowing the threat plastic poses to our environment and health, Narayana Peesapathy created a tasty and nutritious alternative: edible cutlery. Made with flours of jowar (sorghum) blended with rice and wheat, the spoons contain no chemicals, preservatives, fat, emulsifiers, artificial colors, or milk products. They're 100 percent natural, biodegradable, and come in a variety of sweet and savory flavors.

Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Tanya from Atlanta, GA, USA reporting on her chat with Brian from Corralitos, CA, USA.

I chatted with Brian from California's Santa Cruz area this month. He told me that he is a civil trial attorney who specializes in business and real estate law. He's a family man who has relatives in Atlanta, which is where I live. Brian is also a pilot who flies small planes and a railroad/train enthusiast. I can relate because when I was a little girl, I had a TYCO train-race car combo set from Sears that I absolutely loved, and a few years ago, I rode in an Amtrak sleeping compartment from Atlanta to NYC. Brian shares a love of railroads/trains so much that he even speaks to groups about old train systems of the West Coast.

We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week! This section is updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

Member Rory Olsen made a $20 donation. Here is what he had to say:Life is good. Please apply my gift to Polio Plus!

Share your happy dollars thoughts with us and help with doing good around the world.

Selected Comments

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.

Dr. Carlos Gabuardi, Ph.D. said:I was highly moved by the brothers triathlon video. No dout, children have the spark of life, I think it is for every one of us to keep that spark alive while the rest of our selves appears to move away from childhood. Congratulations on the Pacific Bridge Club initiative, traveling opens your eyes and your life to always better possibilities and make us better human beaings. Quite an inspiring session!!!

Andrew Taw said:Nate, you have really raised the bar on reporting for Coffee with a Rotarian. Man, that was good!

Catherine A said:Loved Coffee with a Rotarian this week with a new, awesome and fun way to connect. Kudos, Nate!Great Pacific Bridge presentation as well, plus the triathlon brothers were so inspiring. Great way to end the week.

Program: Conducting Research Using the CRISPR/Cas9 System

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others.

Club member Ferheen Abbasi will be presenting the exciting gene editing technology CRISPR/Cas9 that was discovered in the Doudna Lab at UC Berkeley and has been revolutionizing research around the world. Her lab has been developing this technology since they began to use it in 2013. The Department of Experimental Genome Research at Osaka University focuses on reproductive research, trying to understand the basis of fertility. With the CRISPR/Cas9 system, the Ikawa Lab has genetically modified over 50 mouse lines and has published many papers using the knockout technology.

You’re Almost Done! One last thing: The Attendance Survey…

Thanks for reading and watching this week’s meeting. You have two last things to do before you’re done. First, we have a very short attendance survey below for you to fill out to record your attendance.

Visiting Rotarians, this is how you can get an email receipt to pass along to your club’s secretary as proof that you’ve attended our meeting if you need it for makeups.

Non-Rotarian Guests, we would love to see who is dropping by our meetings! This part is optional for you. If you think you may want to join our eClub at some point in the future, we would strongly recommend you fill out the attendance form as it will improve your chances of success for your membership application.

More importantly, for all members and guests — we strongly recommend and ask that you leave a comment below in our comments area below. Tell us how you enjoyed the program. Ask this week’s speaker any questions you might have. Or just stop by and say hello and tell us where you’re from!
