Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!
Message from President Mitty
Rotary Convention Starts!
New to our meetings? Then I want to welcome you to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley's online meeting! Every week we curate inspiring and educational content in an online format like the one you're seeing here. As you continue reading, watching, and scrolling, our hope is that you'll leave feeling a little bit more inspired. As an online Rotary club, we have these asynchronous meetings online, but we also meet in-person in the Silicon Valley / San Francisco bay area for service projects and for social events. Keep reading on, and feel free to also join us for one of our in-person events if you can make it!This weekend is the start of this year's annual Rotary International Convention happening in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. I'm in Atlanta right now as you read this meeting, and I'm looking forward to meeting up with 7 other of our fellow club members going to the convention: Yvonne, Kristi, Stephen, Ken, Raquel, Brett, and Angela! Very excited that our eClub will have a pretty strong presence at this year's convention. We'll need to see if we can surpass 8 members going for next year's convention in Toronto, June 2018!In next week's meeting I'll be sharing with you all insights and photos from the convention. This week though I want to talk about our last May social that happened last Monday: our sailing fellowship event spearheaded by member Ken Oku! Those of you who were interested in going may have noticed that the event was full after the first 24 hours of it being launched. We had a pretty amazing time with our "Skipper" Ken, as he took us from the Richmond piers to Angel Island, then underneath the Golden Gate Bridge and back to Richmond. Ken brought his own drone to capture some pretty amazing footage of our hike at Angel Island. We're fortunate enough that Ken took the time to put together the drone video for us, which you can experience in the recent event recap segment of this meeting. So continue reading!Huge kudos and shoutout to Ken for putting on such an amazing event. Sometimes the coolest Rotary experiences are when you're able to share an experience with a member doing something they're passionate about. While we all hope Skipper Ken will do another sailing event with us in the future, I also would love to see more members spearheading events. Think about what you enjoy doing - from hiking to eating to sailing - if you think it would be a fun social, let's make it happen! This week's program is formatted a little bit differently than our past programs. Past President Rushton came up with this wildly cool idea that we would run this week's program as an interview rather than as our normal program presentation followed by Q&A. Our guest for this week's program is Francine Hardaway, who mentors entrepreneurs and startup founders. There's a wealth of information to be learned from Francine, as you'll quickly find out as you watch this week's program. I'm glad that we're able to connect with talented people like Francine. Enjoy this week's program!
Yours in service,
Mitty Chang,

Weekly Inspiration: The Origins of the Bendy Straw
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change. This week we are featuring a video from TED Ed about the origins of the bendy straw.
Today, Americans use an estimated 500 million drinking straws every day. But where did the idea for this beloved utensil come from? In the twelfth installment of our ‘Moments of Vision’ series, Jessica Oreck shares the origins of the bendy straw. (Lesson and animation by Jessica Oreck, courtesy of TED Ed.)
Makes you think about what innovation you can think of to make people's lives easier, while making history happen!
Laughing Out Loud (L.O.L.) with our Lady of LOLs
We believe that laughing a little every day keeps you healthier. Every week we try to share with you something that will make you smile! This section is curated by Rotarian Yvonne Kwan, our club’s “Lady of LOLs.”
From Yvonne: "
In honor of the 2017 Rotary International Convention starting later this week in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, here are some peachy jokes for y'all!
"
Did you hear the joke about the peach?
It was pit-iful.
Why did the nectarine have a hair transplant?
Because it wanted to be a peach!
Why was the peach acting funny?
Because it was all fuzzy.
Past Event Recap
In addition to our online meetings and hangouts, we also host in-person events in the San Francisco bay area every month. This segment is for sharing how our past events went.
Last Monday for Memorial Day, we had a sailing fellowship spearheaded by member Ken Oku. Ken is part of a sailing club up in Richmond, and was gracious enough to invite our club out for some sailing in the San Francisco bay area!We had joining us on the sailing trip club members Ken Oku, Andrew Taw, Stephen Zhou, Yvonne Kwan, Mitty Chang, Megan Breyer (and +1 Ryan), Shags Shagrin (and +1 Karen), Brett Sham, Angela Hoang, and Rotaract guest Marty Kludjian! We sailed from the Richmond piers to Angel Island, where we hiked to the top of Angel Island (great photos and video below), where we ate lunch. After the hike, we sailed off to the Golden Gate Bridge, and then returned back to the pier. Here are some photos to share:
In addition to these awesome photos, we have an AMAZING video that member Ken Oku made using the video footage from his drone! Check out the drone video of our Angel Island hike below:
Thanks to everyone who came out!
Special thanks to member Ken Oku for really stepping up for the event. Without him, our sailing trip would definitely not have been possible or as fun! Thanks Ken!
We hope you all will join us for one of our future events.
Coffee with a Rotarian: Tzviatko & Nicole
Getting to know our fellow members and Rotarians is an important part of Rotary. Our club runs a regular initiative called "Coffee with a Rotarian," where members are paired with other Rotarians to get to know each other in a 1 on 1 coffee session either in-person or virtually. These Coffee with a Rotarian initiatives are spearheaded by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we feature a coffee session between members Tzviatko Chiderov of South Africa and Nicole Pham of Livermore, California.
Here is what Tzviatko had to say about Nicole:
Here is what Nicole had to say about Tzviatko:
"I had the pleasure of skyping Tzviatko Chiderov from many many many miles away. Tzviatko has been working in South Africa for the past few years as a consultant. I learned a lot about Tzviatko's many travels and the different places he has been in his young life. One of the things he misses the most about California and the United States are the delicious tacos that he is missing out on. I hope Tzviatko has many more adventures in his near future and gets more tacos real soon. Also I hope the African winters aren't too unbearable!" -Nicole
Thanks for sharing, Nicole and Tzviatko!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)
Last week's happy dollars went towards powering our club's projects and service grants.
Thank you to member Rory Olsenfor his generous $15 donation to Polio Plus fund! Rory had this to say:"Please apply my gift to Polio Plus. All is well this Memorial Day."
Thank you to member Monique Ziesenhenne for her generous $25 donation! Monique had this to say:"I had a great time at Beer O'Clock! It was a gorgeous day. So gorgeous I forgot to attend last week's meeting. Shoot. Anyway - if I can retroactively apply this to Rotaract, that would be great."
Thank you to member Brian Liddicoat for his generous $15 donation! Brian had this to say:"Thankful for a great Memorial Day weekend spent with family and friends."
Thank you all for your donations last week!
This week's happy dollars donations will be going to help fund our club projects and service grants!
Happy dollars is also a great opportunity to share with the group about something good that has happened to you, while giving back to a great cause.
So what are you happy about? Share with us below, and help support one of our future leaders!
Selected Six
Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select six comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.
Here are six comments selected from last week's meeting about Classcraft - Using Games to Redefine the Learning Experience:
Member Rushton Hurley (California, USA) had this to say:"Welcome, Catherine! I look forward to your intro. Mitty, thanks for finding the origami video, too. His are the most intricate designs I believe I've ever seen. Ferheen, I'd certainly love to have videos about your work on NextVista.org! Thanks to everyone for all the nice comments on the previous week's meeting, too. Finally, Shawn - such wonderful work you're doing! Keep pushing the envelope for what's possible in schooling. I'll add a picture, as well, from a recent walk around Stanford's campus. Some visual Silicon Valley for the group. 8^)"
Guest Bec Weragoda (Sydney, Australia) had this to say:"Aussie Aussie Aussie!!! Thanks for the presentation Shawn! As a kid I loved educational computer games. Math, spelling, music and problem solving, it was always a joy to learn through play. The availability of these games significantly reduced after primary school, and it would be great to see these extended to older ages, particularly to engage people in the fields of STEM. Hope to get to meet some of you in Atlanta over the next week!"
Member Mark Dohn (Michigan, USA) had this to say:"Hello and welcome Catherine to our Club! I hope to see you in one of our meeting in the near future. Origami. Math. Physics. Art. Awesome.Shawn, as someone who spent 15 years in the classroom and now works for an educational nonprofit, I think you hit the nail on the head when you spoke about getting students to engage in relationships, both with the educator and the other students. Once that level of engagement and relationship is achieved, it's like hitting critical mass, and YES! you can take the class in any direction with any content through connections. Thank you for a great and informative presentation!"
Member Megan Breyer (California, USA) had this to say:"Shawn, you mentioned more positives than I would have ever imagined. I rely on free apps that utilize gamification to motivate myself to go to the gym. If THAT works, I can only imagine how far this can go with education! Looking forward to hearing more on this topic and hearing about the long-term positive effects this has. Thanks for sharing!
Member Raquel D. Juncal (Costa Rica) had this to say:"Undoubtedly, learning outcomes are not the only indicator of an adequate teaching process, there are other variables related to teacher strategies, characteristics of the object of knowledge, and social, institutional and personal contexts. As a science teacher, I am constantly looking for innovative ideas for my students to build knowledge, interact and consequently generate comprehensive learning and critical thinking that enable them to make decisions. I love playing video games (is a great way to de-stress), so I will certainly take your program into account for the next school year. Thank you very much for your presentation, Shawn.
Catherine, welcome to this amazing family! :D"
Member Shags Shagrin (California, USA) had this to say:"So glad to welcome you to our eClub, Catherine! Looking forward to meeting you at one of our social events soon. Great program, and fascinating video about origami. As for me, I'm a master at free-form origami. See attached photo for a sample. We had a great time at Faction Brewing, as you can see, and also cruising on Monday with Captain Ken and fellow members was a wonderful, stress-releasing day. Many thanks to all who made that happen, especially Ken!"
Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!Tip: If you participate in the monthly photo contest via the comments, you're much more likely to be featured in the next week's meeting! Guests can participate too! Read our Members segment of our meeting to learn more about the theme for this month.
Program: An Interview with Serial Entrepreneur Francine Hardaway
Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, education, technology, and humanitarian service. This week our guest this week is Francine Hardaway. In addition to being a serial entrepreneur, Francine is also Brand Strategist and CEO of Stealthmode Partners, an accelerator for entrepreneurs.
Francine was introduced to our club programs by our past president Rushton Hurley. Rushton first met Francine when they were both members of the Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA, and he was impressed with all the interesting contributions she made to discussions about Rotary, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Francine's company, Stealthmode Partners, has been an advocate and accelerator for almost two decades for entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs: a network of people working together to help support and accelerate new initiatives, emerging growth companies or new directions, projects, or products within existing companies. She curates articles related to politics, the tech industry and more at: http://nuzzel.com/hardaway
