Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from our Charter President Rushton:

Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley, where we explore how our interests in innovation, entrepreneurship, and education align with our Rotarian focus on Service Above Self!In this meeting we have another program for you on how to help people on their way to good jobs. Last week we were inspired by Sharon Winston of Project HIRED, based in San Jose, California. This week, we hear from an Australian Rotarian, Jan Horsely, who has worked to support Essential Personnel Cambodia, an effort to help young people with disabilities get an education and find work in a country where the opportunities for those with physical challenges are tragically few.Why do we in Rotary value attending every week? Like many of us, Jan is one who listened to a speaker at her club a few years ago, and it inspired her to see where she could give her time and energy to make a major difference in the lives of others. We thank you for being part of our club today, and hope that this or one of the many other programs we collect from fascinating people around the world will inspire you to see your own possibilities for meaningful service.Enjoy!

Rushton Hurley,

Charter President

How did the chicken wake up?It had an alarm cluck.

Weekly Inspiration

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

Consider the tamale—a humble, yet tasty Mexican dish of steamed corn husk filled with meat, veggies, cheese and other delectable ingredients. You might know tamales from your favorite lunch spot or go-to food truck. But little did you know that this Mesoamerican staple long ago made its way to the great state of Mississippi. Say what? This is a food story that begins (and ends) with family. Confused? Let us explain (and make you hungry).

Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Cecelia from San Jose, CA, USA reporting on her chat with Roger from Kamloops, BC, Canada.

Roger and I had a lovely visit late last week, where we talked extensively about retirement living arrangements and where to retire. I'm on that path, in about a year. He reminded me of a program in our club last year, about a young woman who bought a tiny house and is living off the grid, in northern Wyoming. Somehow, I had missed that meeting, so I went back to the archives (one of the blessings of an e-club) and watched the program. Pretty interesting! One of the reasons for becoming a member of the e-club is that I can remain a member, no matter where I live, once I do retire.

We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!

Member Rory Olsen made a $20 donation. Here is what he had to say:Bit of a medical problem has me convalescing this week. Please apply my gift to Polio Plus.

Member Brian Liddicoat made a $15 donation. Here is what he had to say:Looking forward to a great summer...

So what are you happy about? Share with us below to help with doing good around the world. As you'll see in this week's program, Essential Personnel Cambodia is an organization dedicated to helping some of the most vulnerable members of that society become productive citizens. Happy Dollars this week will go toward supporting this effort, and we hope you'll be motivated to pitch in now or after you've heard Jan Horsley, our speaker!

Selected Comments

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.

Nathan Gildart said,Sharon, this is a great program. You've made a very important point - we don't see a disability most of the time. I teach at an inclusive school and there is a lot more to an individual than meets the eye. Fabulous that you have a mentoring program as well. Hopefully programs such as this, as well as government and corporate programs can help shift minds to be more empathetic and open. I'll agree with Catherine -you're a great spokesperson.

Steven Shags Shagrin said,Agreed -- great program! Purr-fect humor (hiss), and interesting video about hair, of which I now have little!!

Nathan Dudden said,Thank you for sharing Project Hired with us Sharon. Your passion is evident in the way you describe its mission and programs. Also I loved the video from Huangluo China. 中華文化真的很有意思!

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!

Program: Providing Practical Support to Impoverished Cambodian Students with Disabilities

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, education, technology, and humanitarian service.

Our speaker is Jan Horsley, a Perth Rotarian and grandmother who was moved to act when she learned about Essential Personnel Cambodia (EPC), a program that helps young people living in poverty in Cambodia get their university education and go on to find good jobs.Jan learned about EPC when someone from a local Western Australia organization that helps those with challenges presented at her Rotary club. She learned that they support the Cambodia effort, and now spends some of her time trying to help get the story about EPC to others, with a particular interest in connecting with clubs interested in doing a Global grant (https://my.rotary.org/en/take-action/apply-grants/global-grants).Members and guests, please welcome Jan Horsley!

Additional resources:

  • As she offered in her presentation, Jan is happy to help connect you with ways of helping EPC. You can reach her at horsleys@bigpond.com, or reach out to Mr Ouch (pronounced "oosh") directly via info@essentialpersonnelcambodia.org. Their website is undergoing some work, but you can watch for its re-launch at https://essentialpersonnelcambodia.org/.

Share your thoughts or ask our speaker a question in the comments at the bottom of this meeting page!

You’re Almost Done! One last thing: The Attendance Survey…

Thanks for reading and watching this week’s meeting. You have two last things to do before you’re done. First, we have a very short attendance survey below for you to fill out to record your attendance.

Visiting Rotarians, this is how you can get an email receipt to pass along to your club’s secretary as proof that you’ve attended our meeting if you need it for makeups.

Non-Rotarian Guests, we would love to see who is dropping by our meetings! This part is optional for you. If you think you may want to join our eClub at some point in the future, we would strongly recommend you fill out the attendance form as it will improve your chances of success for your membership application.

More importantly, for all members and guests — we strongly recommend and ask that you leave a comment below in our comments area below. Tell us how you enjoyed the program. Ask this week’s speaker any questions you might have. Or just stop by and say hello and tell us where you’re from!
