Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here's a message from Vice President Rushton:

Welcome, members and guests!

This is

Rushton

, your charter president and one surely near the top of your list of favorite chai tea latte addicts.

It is wonderful to have you take part and share in our weekly effort to inspire all who join in. As you may know, our Rotary club has a special focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and we are constantly exploring how technology can serve the business of serving others.

President Stephen will be away for several weeks, as his family suffered a sudden loss last week. Rotarians around the world come together in order to share their ideas, energy, and resources to make the world better for others, and that includes embracing one of our own when times are tough. Stephen, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

May all of you find something in this week's meeting that allows you to embrace your possibilities for helping others!

Yours in service,

Rushton Hurley,

Vice President

Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley

Weekly Inspiration: The Power of Friendship

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change. This week we are featuring a video from Mutual RescueTM about a woman and her dog who rescued each other.

We all have dark periods in our lives, but one of the things we learn in Rotary is that with others, we can together generate plenty of light. This video from the wonderful people of Mutual Rescue tells the story of Jessi and Andi. I hope it is a video that brings light and warmth to your heart!

Coffee with a Rotarian

Every month our club members are paired with fellow members and special guests for an exclusive one-on-one coffee session called Coffee with a Rotarian. The idea is simple: spend 1 hour of your time during the month to get to better know a fellow Rotarian! Some of the greatest friendships were spawned that way. Members report on their coffee sessions here.

Mitty-Chang-HS-2017.jpg

This week we feature a coffee session between two of our members, Angela Hoang of Sydney, Australia (pictured left) and Mitty Chang of Silicon Valley, USA (pictured right).

Last week we heard what Angela (Ange) had to say about Mitty:

"This month I had the opportunity to have a chat with Mitty Chang who is our Club past president and Charter Member. This isn't the first time I've spoken to Mitty, he and Yvonne were considerate enough to come to the airport to pick us up when Brett and I came to the US earlier this year and we got the chance to get to know each other better when they took us around San Francisco on an amazing food tour!

Through our chat this time I heard about his recent Interota experience earlier in September which was held in Taipei. Interota is a worldwide Rotaract meeting organised by Rotaractors every three years and Mitty had the opportunity to speak at a banquet event during the convention.

For those who don't know, Mitty is a highly sought after professional speaker and we spoke about the challenges of addressing a younger audience than usual and how to engage them. He told me that he spoke about his 13-14 year Rotary journey and how it has helped him make lifelong friends and encouraged him to try new things which he hoped would inspire others to do the same. He also spoke about how important it was to consider joining Rotary later on after Rotaract which is in my opinion a huge topic since there seems to be a decline of Rotaractors moving into Rotary as they get older. It all sounded awesome and I was really proud of Mitty for his efforts both as a friend and as a fellow Rotarian.

The next Interota will be held in Hong Kong which was voted on in Taipei and Mitty told me Cancun was one of the options - I'm sure that would have been an amazing destination but maybe next time!

Thanks for a really great chat Mitty!"

Thank you, Ange, for sharing!

Here is what Mitty had to say about Angela:

"I was so pleased to have the opportunity to talk to Angela! She prefers going by "Ange" and currently works as a Pharmacist for Healthline Pharmacy. She's a February birthday baby (specifically Feb 8th for those of you thinking about birthday presents), and was introduced to Rotary earlier this year by her fiance and fellow club member Brett Sham! Coincidentally enough for timing of our coffee call -- Brett proposed to Ange the weekend prior to our coffee chat. I was definitely happy for both of them!

Ange is a huge foodie and entrepreneur. In her free time, she often is brewing up new business ideas and projects. Her current project gone business idea is a popsicle business featuring unique flavors. She's just working on launching the new popsicle business, so much of the details are still being worked out. As a foodie myself, I'm excited for the possibility of taste testing some of these popsicles the next time I'm in Sydney!

I found out from our encounter back in Atlanta for the Rotary International Convention this past June that Ange doesn't lean towards pre-planning her travel, and has only recently begun to enjoy planning using spreadsheets.

Ange recently stepped up to become our club's International Service Chair. She's working on some exciting service ideas that all members can participate in, regardless of where they geographically are located. She's also working on organizing a "food week" event for our club in Australia. Her idea is that members who want to visit Australia to get immersed in the food and culture can plan on all meeting up in Australia on the same week. More details coming soon!

Thanks for taking the time to chat with me, Ange!"

Thanks for sharing, Mitty!

A big shout out to Tzviatko Chiderov for continuing to chair and organize these Coffee with a Rotarian sessions! If you are not yet signed up for a Coffee Session, please email Tzviatko at tchiderov@gmail.com to sign up!

World of Rotary

The over 1.2 million members of Rotary Clubs around the world form the largest humanitarian service organization, Rotary International. We're part of this global family. This segment is a tribute to stories and to good deeds Rotary clubs around the world are conducting.

As you may know, Rotary is dedicated to six areas of focus, and this week, we'll zero in on the first one: promoting peace. Last week's program from Qman Amir (see the selected comments, below) was a strong reminder of how Rotary goes beyond words and puts in motion activities that make a difference.

More than a thousand people have been accepted to and graduated from Rotary Peace Centers in different parts of the world. They have helped rebuild lives for refugees, taught conflict mediation to people in places of strife, and conducted anti-bullying campaigns in schools, developed programs to address domestic violence, and much more.

To learn more how you help Rotary "wage peace," take a moment to explore the information and stories at

the Promoting Peace page on Rotary's website

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)

Last week's happy dollars went towards powering our club's projects and service grants.

Thank you to member Rory Olsen for his generous $15 donation to PolioPlus! Rory had this to say:"The plan is to sign the contract with the remodeler later this week. If all goes according to plan, early next year our first story should be restored. Please apply my gift to Polio Plus."

Thank you to member Brian Liddicoat for his generous $15 donation. Brian had this to say:"Two new kids with families moving into our neighborhood: my kids really psyched. Finally they have friends to play with next door."

Thank you all for your donations last week!

earthquake.jpg

This week's happy dollars donations will be going towards a special relief fund to help rebuild communities and homes in Chiapas, Mexico hit by the recent earthquakes. Our club will be matching every dollar donated up to $250. So your happy dollars this week will be 2x their normal impact!

Happy dollars is also a great opportunity to share with the group about something good that has happened to you, while giving back to a great cause.

So what are you happy about? Share with us below, and help support victims of the earthquakes in Chiapas, Mexico.

Selected Six

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select six comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are six comments selected from last week's meeting featuring the program on Rotary Peace Fellowship:

Screen-Shot-2016-09-05-at-12.25.04-PM.png

Member Brett Sham (Sydney, Australia) had this to say:"Qman thanks again for taking the time out to speak to our club. I hope all our members are safe during these horrific fires. I see the occasional news about it here and it looks terrifying and there seems to be utter destruction. I was lucky enough to take part in the One Small Act viewing in Atlanta and it was truly an eye opener. Sometimes I feel like I forget that these conflicts are affecting real people / individuals and they are more than just a headline, and that each person has their own story and journey. I'm writing this comment lying in bed after a huge weekend at the Australian Rotaract Conference. I took plenty of photos and once I sort through them will share with the club. Heard so many amazing stories and hopefully have a few people that will present to our club. I'm exhausted but feeling rewarded that the hard work has paid off and also so inspired by the stories I heard and the passion that so many of these Rotaractors have. It's opportunities like this that remind me why I'm involved with Rotary. So glad to be a member of such an amazing club and be surrounded by some wonderful people."

Screen-Shot-2016-10-30-at-7.04.12-PM.png

Member Monique le Conge Ziesenhenne (California, USA) had this to say:"Inspirational insight into the Peace Fellowship work and how your career developed on this path, Q! It's important work and I wish you the best. Libraries in California have VR stations (or will soon) that the public can use (article from Library Journal) and Marin County Library has been a leader in this area, in case you want to learn more. At Palo Alto City Library, we use the technology to assist with prep/design for items before they are printed on a 3D printer. Volunteers can assist - maybe that's a role for Rotary club members?"

Screen-Shot-2016-09-05-at-12.08.43-PM.png

Member Tzviatko Chiderov (South Africa) had this to say:"Great to see Rushton with our Australian members there :) fits well with the travel fellowship discussion. Rick, thanks for the educational program. I wasn't aware there are so many fellowships. And one for members of Rotary eClubs?! Seems like there really is something for everybody."

Screen-Shot-2017-05-01-at-12.19.03-PM.png

Member Maxi Bustos (California, USA) had this to say:"Great meeting! Thanks Q for your presentation! I am happy to see that Rotary Peace Fellowship had an important impact on your career and that you are using that knowledge to help others."

Screen-Shot-2016-08-21-at-3.26.49-PM.png

Member Leanza Tupfer (California, USA) had this to say:"WOW! Rotary sets the record at the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, with more than 3,000 people simultaneous viewing a VR film. I wonder what Rotary can do with VR to help other places in the world? :)"

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!
