Here’s a message from our Club President
Hello members!
Do you remember your first days as a Rotarian? I do — because those early experiences impacted who I am now. Rotary instilled in me a desire to look beyond boundaries and embrace service. Throughout my life, I have found fulfillment in service. I'm sure many of you feel the same way. If you need to reinvigorate your feeling of service, October — Economic and Community Development Month — is a perfect time to do so.
Therefore, join me this month in becoming a better Rotarian and assisting others in improving themselves and their communities. Developing solid communities is, however, impossible without strong public health. On October 24, World Polio Day, we will celebrate the great Rotary accomplishments in the fight to eradicate polio. But we also know that this fight is not over. We still need support in generating funding and increasing awareness to guarantee that all children are protected against polio. Speaking of health, as you know, the club has been working hard these past months to provide more opportunities for promoting healthcare awareness. Among the next initiatives to be introduced in the coming weeks/months, there will be the telemedicine project that will involve a series of special talks with healthcare experts. In addition, we are planning a Fundraising Photography Contest.

Breakfast at the Neighbor's
A woman was taking care of a neighbor's little girl one morning. She arrived in time for breakfast and sat down at the table. "Mommy always makes me hot muffins for breakfast," the girl said.
Eager to please, the woman went into the kitchen and prepared a tine of hot, fresh muffins.
"No thank you," the girl said when they were brought to her.
The surprised woman replied, "I thought you said your mother always has muffins for breakfast?"
"She does, but I don't like them."

This photo of a lightning storm was taken by Marc Selles. From the star trails in the night sky it looks to be a long exposure of at least 5 minutes. The clouds were illuminated by the lightning strikes for a fraction of a second so the long exposure did not blur the clouds. This is a good way to photograph lightning, but it requires a sturdy tripod.
Learn Something New
The Last Rubber Band Factory in Korea
I really enjoy "how it's made" videos, and this one is truly fascinating. The background music isn't so loud you can't hear the squishiness and gooshiness of the material as it goes through the mixing process. Run it at Double Speed playback, as it's just over 8 minutes long. You'd think that the process to make rubber bands would be more snappy!!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)

The US Department of Agriculture Forest Service started using long-term fire retardant to attack active wildfires from the air back in 1963. Since that time, the devastation caused by wildfire has increased exponentially, due to climate change, expansion of residential and business developments in what is called the wildland-urban interface, and a host of other contributing factors. Fire retardant technology has had to evolve to keep pace with these growing challenges.
In this presentation, Melissa Kim, the Vice President of Research & Development at Perimeter Solutions, will discuss how fire retardant technology has advanced over the last 60 years to become more effective and environmentally responsible. She will also explain how these advancements have helped those involved in fire management—including government agencies, utilities, transportation companies, and railways—to transition from completely focusing on wildfire suppression to incorporating greater efforts to proactively prevent wildfires from starting in the first place in order to protect homes and save lives.
Melissa Kim has been developing fire safety products since 2004 and is responsible for worldwide product development at Perimeter Solutions. She provides assistance to all areas of the Fire Safety business ensuring product quality and technical support. Melissa holds a BS in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine.
