Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!
Here’s a message from President Tzviatko:
Greetings Rotarians and Guests,We had a productive board meeting last Friday. I'm always amazed at the wonderful contributions of time, effort and ideas that the leaders in our club put forth - thank you everyone! This week, Dr. Glenn Posner will talk to us about simulation-based education and the potential for this approach to be used in just about any type of learning. Looking forward to your comments below.
Sincerely,
Tzviatko
President, Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley
Guests, we are happy to have you join us this week!
As we see it, our flexibility as an online, asynchronous club allows a special type of service to Rotarians around the world: we make it easier for anyone to strive for and maintain 100% attendance. That keeps you engaged with Rotary's events and ideas, and provides a moment of inspiration for devoting your creativity, talents, and resources to good causes. You are certainly not required to pay anything in order to attend our meetings. However, if you would like to make a small contribution to our service efforts, you are welcome to do so in our secure Happy Dollars section down the page. This could be what you normally pay at your own club's meetings for lunch, for example. Any amount is welcome, but first and foremost, we're happy you've joined us, and hope you will share with others who we are and what we do to help inspire Service Above Self. And don't forget to fill out our attendance form so you get an email you can pass on to your club's secretary!

Weekly Inspiration
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.
When a city has so much to offer that lots of people move there, and planners have to get creative about where to build, what might they try? In this video, you'll learn about several ideas being "floated" about new possibilities for the dynamic city of Singapore.
Member Spotlight
This week's Member Spotlight is Shags Shagrin! Here is what he has been up to lately:
This week's Member Spotlight is Shags Shagrin! Here is what he has been up to lately:The question was posed to me, "What have you been up to?" This past 18 months has been quite interesting, starting with me having to stop a moving shopping cart that was full while trying to dodge someone in a parking lot and feeling a "POP" in my left hip joint. I'm finally having surgery to become bionic on Tuesday (10/8) and will post updates online. In preparation, I've been "ordered" to lose weight, and I'm down about 20 pounds from my recent highs, which is good. More to go once I can walk without pain again! And I'm always cooking and experimenting in the kitchen, recently with Thai recipes. Love that fish sauce and peanut butter!!I'm also spending as much time as I can with my grandson, Caleb, who is now approaching his first birthday (10/16). When on the floor playing with him, we both crawl -- him to get somewhere and me to find a chair to help pull myself up! Ouch!! It's so much fun to watch your child's child grow up, as when it's yours, you're so busy being a parent that you can't always appreciate the moments. I do a lot of animal and funny voices for him (my love of cartoons and quirkiness) and it's a delight to see his response. My daughter asked what I wanted him to call me, and we all decided on "Grumps"!!To end on a Rotary note, I recently hit my anniversary of becoming a Rotarian (8/3/82), so now I'm working on my 38th year of perfect attendance. (For those of you with ANY absence -- what's your excuse? We're 24/7/365 and can't make it any easier other than holding a meeting at your home!)

Through a Rotarian's Lens
Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. In this section Member Keith Marsh shares his incredible photography! If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.
While we were in Tanzania on our Rotary water project last year, our exclusive mode of transportation was by bus. These were not fancy tour buses speeding along paved highways. The roads were mostly dirt and very rough. The buses were old and had bad suspension. I took this photo through the dirty window of the bus at sunrise. I set my camera at a very fast shutter speed (high ISO) and lowered the exposure because of the brightness of the sun. The silhouette of the ubiquitous baobab tree was taken the night before and added to improve the composition and help identify the location.
Learn Something New
This section is curated by members Shags Shagrin and Rushton Hurley and aims to teach our members and guests something new, fun and useful! If you have any ideas on a fun trick or skill you'd like to share please contact Rushton or Shags.

Coffee With a Rotarian
A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we have Rushton from San Jose, CA, USA reporting on a chat with Brett from Sydney, Australia
I had the pleasure of connecting with Brett Sham in Sydney for my September CWR. As I was working on my federal and state nonprofit reporting right before the call, we got into a discussion of how tax-exempt organizations differ in Australia and the U.S., and made our way into how education is changing in both countries. I learned that Ange (his wife, and another member of our way cool club) recently did some major baking, creating an amazing lemon-raspberry cake for an event. (Yummy!) As part of that side business they both do, Brett has picked up a 3D printer to create custom cookie cutters. Lesson learned: not all materials that are used in 3D printing can escape a dishwasher in the same shapes they started. Great talking with you, Brett! We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)
Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week! This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.
Rory Olsen made a $20 donation. The forecast is for temperatures in the 60s next weekend at night. Brrr! Please apply my gift to Polio Plus.
Nova Hall made a $20 donation. It is wonderful to be alive.
Lin (Stella) Su made a $20 donation. Thank you for offering the eClub program! Really vivid and a great way to visit another Rotary Club.
Selected Comments
Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.
Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.
Tzviatko Chiderov said:Loved the knitting video and Rory's story!James, thanks for your presentation. Always great to hear about different uses and benefits of technology in the classroom.
TLaGarde said:James, thank you so much for your presentation. The stories you shared about students and how coding can bring a confidence and a shared interest that can take a student into new and different social areas was very moving. I also enjoyed hearing about the pollution sensing project in KL and hope your students keep up with it. It sounds very neat! Thanks again for sharing and best of luck to you and your students in their upcoming competitions.
ShagsCA said:The knitting video brought back great grandma memories. My mom's mom always had her knitting bag with her, and her hands were always busy. Lots of scarves and sweaters growing up, but my favorites were always her afghans. She made me one large enough to be a bedspread for a double mattress in 1978, and I still have -- and use -- it to this day at the foot of my bed. Truffle loves to burrow under it at night! And James, again -- great program!
Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!
Program: Simulation-based Education: From Helping Trainees to Helping the Entire System
Speaker: Dr. Glenn Posner
Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week.
If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directlyor submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!
Dr. Glenn Posner is an Associate Professor and clinician educator in the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Ottawa. He graduated from McGill University Medical School in 1999 before moving to Ottawa for residency. After completing his training in Obstetrics & Gynecology in 2004, he worked at the Montfort Hospital before moving to The Ottawa Hospital in 2009. He has served as the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education as well as the Vice-Chair of Education for his department.Dr. Posner is the inaugural medical director of the Simulation Patient Safety Program at The Ottawa Hospital, and the medical director of the University of Ottawa Skills & Simulation Centre. He is also a Simulation Educator for the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada and has served on the planning committee of Simulation Summit for nearly a decade, coordinating the popular SimWars/SimTrek event. Dr. Posner's program of research relates to the assessment of the intrinsic CanMEDS roles and patient-safety competencies using all forms of simulation.Dr. Posner will share the story of how training for pilots has been adapted to training for medical students and residents, and how these techniques are now being used to train entire health-care teams. Furthermore, the scenario design techniques and facilitated debriefings after these sessions can be used by hospitals for disaster preparedness or to test new facilities. Simulation can be used outside of the healthcare context to prepare office buildings, shopping malls or convention centers to manage crises. From individual competence, to team-building, to stress-testing any system, simulation-based education is not only here to stay - it is the way of the future.Members and guests, please welcome Dr. Glenn Posner!https://youtu.be/IV0zZDKw-ncAdditional Resources
