Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!
Here's a message from President Stephen:
Hello E-Club Rotarians,
I hope everyone is having a great start to the new year. Wanted to let everyone know that we are looking to have new positions filled within our club for President Elect Andrew Taw's Year. We are currently still reaching out to everyone to see who might be interested in getting more involved with the different committees we have such as, Service Committee, Membership Committee, or Programs Committee. If you would like to learn more about these different committees or just even more ways to get involved with the club, please feel free to reach out to Andrew or myself, and we will work together with you to find the right committee for you!
Yours in service,
Stephen Zhou,
President

Weekly Inspiration: The Taxi Service Fighting for Indonesia’s Disabled Community
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change. This week we are featuring a video from Great Big Story about service through entrepreneurship: a taxi service for Indonesia's disabled community.
After a childhood bout with polio left him in crutches, Triyono understood firsthand how difficult it could be for those with disabilities to access public transportation. He wanted to do whatever he could to help mobilize Indonesia’s disabled community and thus founded Difa City Tour and Transport. The taxi service is entirely staffed by those with disabilities, and is devoted to serving disabled passengers. Passengers contact the service with their time, place and special need, and a motorbike is sent to pick them up. Along with his employees, Triyono is building a world built for everyone.
It's incredible to see people helping those in need who are often overlooked. Have you thought about an underserved group in your community that needs more services?

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)
Last week's happy dollar contributions went towards our club projects. Here are some of the happy dollar messages from last week:
Thank you to member Monique Ziesenhenne for her generous $20 donation. Monique had this to say:"Towards club fund, please!"
Thank you to member Brian Liddicoat for his generous donation! Brian had this to say:"Pushing through a week of stomach flu shows me, once again, that I really married way over my station in life. Wouldn't have made it without my selfless wife taking on 300% of her normal workload without a single complaint."
Thank you to member Rory Olsen for his generous $15 donation. Rory had this to say:"Lived through the hard freeze. Please apply my gift to Polio Plus."
Thank you all for your donations last week!
Happy dollars is also a great opportunity to share with the group about something good that has happened to you, while giving back to a great cause. Next week's happy dollars will go back to powering our club's projects locally and globally.
So what are you happy about? Share with us below to help with doing good around the world.
Selected Six
Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select six comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.
Here are six comments selected from last week’s meeting featuring the program on Working in the Malaria Sphere in Southern Africa:
Member Raquel D. Juncal (Mexico) had this to say:“Kelly, thank you for taking the time to speak to our club! I would love to connect with you sometime about collaboration opportunities. I have a project about malaria, and perhaps we can chat more about it! Keep up the good work!“
Member Shags Shagrin (California, USA) had this to say:“Great program, Kelly! And the humor this week was a little ruff...(wink wink). Hey, Yvonne -- where do noisy dogs get sent? To the barking lot!!! What do you do with a dog that has no tail? Take it to a retail store!!! Sniff sniff sniff...”
Member Nathan Gildart (Japan) had this to say:“Kelly, thank you for teaching us more about malaria and the work you are doing. I think your point on using language and offering information that reduces assumptions is important. You and your organization are doing wonderful work. Laundriod. It's amazing how laziness leads to innovation. I'm in! ;)”
Member Brian Liddicoat (California, USA) had this to say:“Husbands are cheaper than a $16,000 robot. If you choose carefully, they are usually easier to train. Constant encouragement may be necessary and results will vary. Very interesting presentation about malaria. Conquering/Managing this awful disease is critical to helping equatorial nations lift themselves out of poverty. My younger sister worked on malaria control as a doctor in Congo DRC.“
Member Chris Cochrane (Toronto, Canada) had this to say:“When a robot learns to wash, dry, fold or hang my clothes while cleaning my nest, ordering food and cooking it for dinner then doing the dishes and placing them in cupboards, then you’ll have an item I might buy. But a $16,000 robot to fold only bright coloured T-shirts ? Good demo of future possibilities but still a long way from marketable.“
Member Monique Ziesenhenne (California, USA) had this to say:“Fascinating presentation - I've learned a lot. Thank you both for such an interesting discussion. Malaria treatment has been in the news this week, so good timing. I'm glad that the recent discoveries to help with drug-resistant malaria were aided by a robot (https://www.sciencedaily.co.... One robot folds laundry, one assists in the science of malaria!”
Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!
