The President-elect's Message
Hello Rotarians and guests! Welcome to this week's meeting of the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley! Every week our meeting features ideas and messages that are carefully curated to educate and inspire you, our audience.
My name is Mitty Chang (that's me in that End Polio Now photo!), and I am stepping in for President Rushton during this week's meeting. Whether you are a member of this club, a Rotarian from another club, or a guest, we are thrilled to have you at our meeting this week! As a Rotary eClub, we bring together community and business leaders from around the world to take action in their local communities through humanitarian service. Most of our members are based in the Silicon Valley near or in the San Francisco bay area. We also have members abroad from Canada to South Africa, who while don't live in the Silicon Valley, have interests or ties directly to the Silicon Valley. As the webmaster and president-elect of this club, I am charged with many of the updates and the initiatives moving forward for this eClub. We are always looking for constructive criticisms, and new partnership opportunities. Feel free to leave a message in the DISQUS section at the bottom of this page with these comments or critiques, or feel free to email them to webmaster@siliconvalleyrotary.com. We are constantly improving our website and how our meetings are run. Those of you who are members or those of you who have been to our website before will probably notice that a few changes have already happened. Most notably, the meeting pages have been restyled to help improve readability on desktop screens, and the homepage has been given a facelift to make it more relevant. More exciting initiatives and changes are coming soon! Keep checking back. For our eClub members: The leadership team is hard at work to provide you all with some exciting member benefits that will be coming out in the very near future. In addition to improving the website, we are also working to create more in-person socials and online socials on a regular schedule to provide more of you with the opportunity to connect with your fellow eClub Rotarians. Make sure to mark your calendars for the upcoming dates in the Upcoming Events section of this meeting.Rotarian guests: We ask that you consider contributing whatever for you is the regular cost of a Rotary meal to the efforts of our club. The Power of Images
We believe that there is power in imagery, and that great photos can inspire in its own unique way. Every week we feature a powerful photo to inspire you.
Meet Werfel.
This photograph entitled “Werfel’s first pair of new shoes”, appeared in the 1946 issue of Life magazine. In this photograph, Werfel, a six-year-old Austrian orphan, had just received his first new pair of shoes as part of the post-war relief effort of the American Red Cross. Can you think of a time when you have given back through doing community service or even donating a pair of shoes, and seeing the positive impact of your actions? Warm fuzzies are absolutely priceless.
The Tid Bit
Every week, we feature a new tech tid bit or life hack to make your life more convenient. This week's tid bit is on UberConference, a free service to host conference calls both online and dial-in by phone. Take your next work meeting digitally or by phone!
This week's Tech Tid Bit features UberConference. UberConference provides free conference calling both online and dial in by phone. Features include call recording, personalized phone numbers, both computer & dial-in options, and Google Hangouts integration. What we particularly like about UberConference is that there is no software or plugins to be downloaded. Whether or not you run or join a conference call by computer, tablet, or phone, there's no extra software needed! We also like that it's free for up to 10 callers, and that the paid version is pretty inexpensive as well.
Here's a quick look at the sign up process, and starting a conference call:https://youtu.be/IgOuCDjiryI
A Moment of Inspiration
Every week we share an inspiring video because we believe everyone needs a juice box full of inspiration at least once a week. This week's moment of inspiration is a clip from the 2006 film, The Pursuit of Happyness. It's about protecting your dreams.
In this clip, single-father Chris Gardner (played by Will Smith) is telling his young son (Jaden Smith) that if you want something, you go get it. Period.Remember to protect your dreams.
A Little Humor
We feature a little bit of humor every week because we believe laughter is sometimes the best medicine, and we just want to brighten your day!
This week's joke is Star Wars themed, and comes from flying_dutchmaster on Reddit.
Why was Star Wars shot Episodes 4, 5, 6, then 1, 2, 3?... Because in charge of directing, Yoda was.
Events & Projects
What We Do: Upcoming Events
This section of our meeting is where you learn about events and projects our club has coming up. We welcome guests to all of our events and service projects listed here.
School Supplies Drive for Buchser Middle School in Santa Clara:
Last week we started our effort to help member Heather Shaw and her team gather school supplies for teachers and needy students at Buchser Middle School in Santa Clara. There are several ways you can help, and we’ll be passing out plenty of kudos to those who do two or all three!
1) Drop by Nova Chiropractic on Saturday, October 3rd, and drop off a ream of paper, or a set of white board markers, or something similar (see below). There will be plenty of fun for all (with extras for those who bring a donation) – ice cream, chair massages, backpack safety demos, prize wheels, nutritional testing, blood sugar screenings (before the ice cream, of course) and raffle drawings with prizes donated by local businesses (thanks to ideas from our members and guests from the program Heather did!).
2) Donate to the cause. The money raised will allow the school to purchase needed materials not gathered through physical donations. Use the secure Happy Dollars form below, or send a check to Treasurer Allen using the info above – either way, let us know in the comments what the donation is for.
3) Reach out to your contacts via email, social media, and phone to get them to do one or both of the two items above.
Here’s the list of items the school is hoping for: white copy paper, glue sticks, dry erase markers, pens/pencils, binder paper, dry erase boards, calculators, colored pencils, construction paper, small scissors, Kleenex, composition notebooks, index cards, highlighters, electric pencil sharpener, sharpies, paper towels, disinfectant cleaning wipes, graph paper, art supplies, 5-subject notebooks
This is our fall local service shindig, so let’s get everyone on board to make it happen!
Coastal Cleanup Service on September 19:

You and your close buddies can go to Woodside for the annual Rocktoberfest, which includes, as they put it, “great beer, wine, food and dancing to the amazing sounds of PopRocks.”

The World of Rotary
We are part of the Rotary International family with over 1.2 million members in over 180 countries in the world. Rotary's reach is global. Here are some Rotary initiatives and events we think we should know about.
Polio Immunization and West Africa Project Fair
It appears a group of Rotarians will be going to West Africa in November both to participate in an immunization effort and to attend a project fair put together by Rotarians from fifteen countries in that region. Click here for the full tour info shared by the company organizing this excursion.
Rotary's Immunization Efforts in Nepal
Sujan Pradhan of the Rotary Club of Kakarvitta, Jhapa, Nepal, tells about members of his club hitting the road in June to inspect immunization booths on the border of Nepal and India. Read about it in the Rotary Blog, which has this and many more stories of Rotarians doing good in the world.
Rotary Peace Conference in January 15-16, 2016 in Ontario, California
The Rotary World Peace Conference 2016 will be a chance to learn from expert leaders in conflict prevention and resolution, become inspired and leave with immediate action plans to implement in your communities. This event is open to all members of the public to attend, and is organized by Rotary. For list of speakers, topics, and pricing, please visit www.peaceconference2016.org. We strongly encourage members who are available to attend this conference! If you are interested in going, leave a comment in the DISQUS section.
Annual Rotary International Convention in Seoul, South Korea
It isn’t too early to begin thinking about next summer’s Rotary International Convention in Seoul, South Korea. The RI Convention is a chance to experience how amazingly international our organization is, and to be inspired by the good being done around the world. Next year’s gathering will be May 28th-June 1st, and you can learn more at the convention website.
Service Survey
It’s that time when we celebrate what our members have been up to on the service front! If you’re one of the several folks in our club who has yet to report something in the survey, let this be the encouragement to make it happen!
Over the last month, Heather Shaw contacted businesses for support in preparation for the school supplies drive, François Tessier worked on logistics for his humanitarian project in Sri Lanka (the Ayubowan Project), Martin Fox mentored young entrepreneurs, Rushton Hurley mentored teachers, Hardeep Singh joined other Rotary and Rotaract Clubs in District 5320 to clean up 600+ pounds of trash in the Newport Back Bay in Orange County (while kayaking!), and Paul Mosso is the Chair of the Rotary Liaison Committee for the Rotaractors and helps mentor the Rotaract District Committee. We know more of you did great things, but didn’t put it in the survey! You can fix that by filling out the Service Survey now. Good on ya!

Selected Comments from Last Week
Every week our members and guests are introduced to some fascinating person helping make something cool happen in his or her community. Our programs are a point of pride for us, as we can reach around the world to find inspiring stories to share.
Given our online format, we can also share our thoughts about what we read and watch. After the program below, the meeting ends with your opportunity to leave an impression, a compliment, an idea, or whatever you wish. We look forward to what you have to say, so make sure not to turn and walk away silently!
Here are 5 selected comments from last week's meeting:
"This is absolutely amazing work, Stefan! Innovate the Cape is a prime example of empowering youth and cultivating innovative thinking in them -- so inspirational! I also love the fact that you're striving to involve more girls at a young age. Keep up the awesome work!" -Yvonne Kwan, club member"
Wow. Seven years ago as I sat in Israel speaking to a friend in Hawaii via Skype. (he was using just his phone - no Wifi!) We discussed how the future of education was giving students the tools to connect and solve the challenges that exist in their world. To see that beginning to happen is phenomenal. I wonder how we move this from the fringe into educational system to remove what Stefan calls that "rote learning" model and the challenges of sharing their program." -Mark Dohn, club member"
Stefan, I'm inspired by what you, Grant and Emma are doing in Innovate the Cape. As a teacher I see some key elements of your organization's approach. You off encouragement and ongoing support; foster the development of intrinsically motivating projects, due to the local nature; and provide young people with an outlet to experience success. You mentioned that when you failed in an initial attempt to promote the organization, you took that failure and found a formula for success. This kind of thing is inspiring for young people, as they can see that failure is often part of the journey to success. That you also mention getting girls and young women involved is great. I teach at a girls' school and empowerment of young women is crucial to social progress and economic development. Wonderful and inspiring work!" -Nathan Gildart, guest"
Stefan, what an inspired effort! I applaud what you and your group are doing. I think you're right on track gaining trust with students at a grass roots level to spread the good word of Innovate South Africa. Keith, great image of Denali! I had the good fortune of visiting the park many years back. Amazingly, my family and I saw the mountain on a cloud-free day, which I understand is rare. It was truly inspiring!" -Gene Tognetti, club member"
Amazing work Stefan - simply amazing. The work you and your organization are doing is game changing on so many levels of sustainable economic development. You nailed it :-) Keith, your Denali photo took my breath away (your photos frequently do.) And thanks for the birthday wishes - my family followed closely after the 1620's crew and helped found what is now Cambridge and Boston. Pioneering and Game Changing runs in the blood of the Fox family and the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley. It's great to be in this tribe with all of you. :-)" -Martin Fox, club officer
