Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from President Tzviatko:

Greetings Rotarians and Guests,Thank you to all of you who filled out the committee sign-up form. I'll connect you with other members of the committee(s) you've joined so you can coordinate a time to meet and discuss next steps. I appreciate your leadership and commitment to our club and I'm looking forward to working with all of you! This week Sam Fewster from Rotaract Australia will tell us about an impressive service project in Zimbabwe she took the lead on a couple years ago.Enjoy the program and don't forget to let us know you were here!

Sincerely,

Tzviatko

President, Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley

Guests, we are happy to have you join us this week!

As we see it, our flexibility as an online, asynchronous club allows a special type of service to Rotarians around the world: we make it easier for anyone to strive for and maintain 100% attendance. That keeps you engaged with Rotary's events and ideas, and provides a moment of inspiration for devoting your creativity, talents, and resources to good causes. You are certainly not required to pay anything in order to attend our meetings. However, if you would like to make a small contribution to our service efforts, you are welcome to do so in our secure Happy Dollars section down the page. This could be what you normally pay at your own club's meetings for lunch, for example. Any amount is welcome, but first and foremost, we're happy you've joined us, and hope you will share with others who we are and what we do to help inspire Service Above Self. And don't forget to fill out our attendance form so you get an email you can pass on to your club's secretary!

Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”

yvonnebubble.png

We've got some eye-opening jokes for you this week! Trust me, they are just as cornea as the others!

Why did the phone wear glasses? He lost all his contacts!

What did one eye say to the other eye?Between you and me, something smells!

What did the lens say to the police?I've been framed!

Weekly Inspiration

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

Mitsuo Nakatani is a mochi master, and to watch him do his work is a genuine thrill. Turning sticky rice into Japan’s traditional soft and chewy treat requires pounding, flipping and smashing the glutinous rice at high speeds in perfect coordination with a team. While visitors come to Nakatani’s mochi shop to taste the best, they stay to watch him make it.

Through a Rotarian's Lens

Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. In this section Member Keith Marsh shares his incredible photography! If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.

Mt Whitney is the highest peak in the continental US located in the Eastern Sierra. This photo was taken several years ago from the east side near Lone Pine in the Alabama Hills on an early winter morning after sunrise. I caught the moon just before it set behind the mountain.

Learn Something New

This section is curated by members Shags Shagrin and Rushton Hurley and aims to teach our members and guests something new, fun and useful! If you have any ideas on a fun trick or skill you'd like to share please contact Rushton or Shags.

Hi, everyone! It's August, and I've put together another Tech Tidbit for our Learn Something New section. Can I get a woohoo? If not, I'd suggest re-ordering things so that you're having more fun. This one is on a Gmail feature called Undo Send. Not hard to guess what that's about, of course, but if you don't know about it, using this may save your posterior at a critical moment. In life, it's good to collect that which may allow for a posterior save.As always, you are welcome to critique the video without mercy. I'd welcome any thoughts you have, or perhaps a suggestion for another Tech Tidbit you'd like to see in the coming months.Rushton Hurley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSFhMpUe7RQ

Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Roger from Kamloops, BC, Canada reporting on a chat with Ferheen from Santa Clara, CA, USA.

We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Service Report

Tell us about service you’ve done recently in your community.Click here to fill out The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley Service Survey

On the first meeting of every month, we feature service reports from club members for the previous month. Thanks for your service everyone!

Gildart, Nate: I did photography and video for my hometown's Friends of the Public Gardens. They had an event that was tied to the Japanese Tanabata festival on July 7th. I'm now a "Friend of the Public Gardens" and hope to assist with the preservation and promotion of this national historic site. (apparently, the most visited in Nova Scotia!) The purpose was to bring people together in the gardens for family-friendly activities.Stabile, Sandy: Painted tree posts to look like pencils. They will be used for a garden that will be made for an elementary school in Fremont. This project was also used to show young adults how they can become involved with Rotary. This project was sponsored by Niles Fremont RotaryChiderov, Tzviatko: Built a basic website for the Rotary Club of Msasa in Harare, Zimbabwe (https://rotaryclubmsasa.com/); Provided advice and guidance to 2 young tech entrepreneurs in Zimbabwe.

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week! This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.Rory Olsen made a $20 donation.Good week for me. Selected Comments

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.

Brett Sham said:

YVONNE & MITTY - CONGRATULATIONS ❤️🍾🥂!!! So excited for you both.

Thanks for the recipe Shags - we normally cook pasta once a week so will have to give it a go and report back sometime soon. We did a slow cooked beef ragu for dinner last night.

Rushton, would love to see a presentation about your trip one week - it sounds like quite the adventure.

Cal, thanks for the presentation. The Peace Corps sounds like a great way to get people engaged in service and to broaden their horizons and make them more worldly at the same time. I wish we had a program like this in Australia. It sounds like combined the two organisations have had a real tangible impact on the communities there.

Ferheen Abbasi said:

Cal, thank you so much for your presentation! What an incredible partnership! It makes so much sense to link Peace Corps and Rotary, as both organizations believe in the power of service! I loved hearing your story - thank you for everything you are doing to help the community in North Macedonia.

Also, congrats, Mitty and Yvonne! And Shags, oh my god that sauce looks incredible.

Rushton Hurley said:

Mitty and Yvonne - congratulations on your decision to lives of service together! Loved the video about mountain boarding and the story about Ella Lacey (nice tie-in to this week’s program). It was also fun to read Mark’s report on Maxi to get info on two of our southern hemisphere guys! Brian - get past that shoulder injury. It is better to be a good person with a weak shoulder than to have a perfect shoulder and be a weenie. Cal, great presentation! I hope I get to hear why Macedonia and Slovakia are tied together at some point.

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!

Program: Project Partnerships - A Rotaract Perspective

Speaker: Samantha Fewster

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week.

If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directlyor submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!

Samantha is passionate about sharing the opportunities that Rotaract offers members. One of the most impactful opportunities she has been given, was the chance to travel to Zimbabwe on a Rotaract Trip which lead to a partnership between a local club and her two districts to supply disadvantaged women with reusable sanitary pads and the skills to make the product themselves. We often forget the privileged lives we are living and this travel experience and partnership was a reminder that we are all human, we all have hopes and dreams and we all have the same basic needs. Realising Rotaract is a platform to help us use that privilege to make a difference was a significant moment and a moment she would like all members to experience during their Rotaract or Rotary journey.https://youtu.be/9WW2Xc1h0pgShare your thoughts or ask our speaker a question in the comments at the bottom of this meeting page!

This part is optional for you. If you think you may want to join our eClub at some point in the future, we would strongly recommend you fill out the attendance form as it will improve your chances of success for your membership application.
