July is winding down, but we should not let the month pass without recognizing the special day that is Thursday the 30th.Many of you are familiar with the efforts of the United Nations related to peacekeeping efforts, the World Health Organization, and/or the Millennium Development Goals. They also sponsor all kinds of other programs, and one, it turns out, is the International Day of Friendship! How cool is that?Celebrate that day this week by contacting a few friends, asking them if they knew of the International Day of Friendship, telling them why they're cool people, and then sharing something cool that's happened in your life lately. Feel free to then invite them to visit our Rotary eclub!Rotarian guests, we ask that you contribute whatever for you is the regular cost of a Rotary meal to the efforts of our club. New Member Time
It is our pleasure for the third time this month to bring someone new into our club! Members will remember the email with Hardeep Singh's complete bio from several weeks ago, but I have asked her to share with everyone her reason for seeking to be part of Rotary and this eclub.
Hardeep Singh"I'm joining this club because I have been dedicated to Rotary since I was a child, and I was also a Rotaractor for almost five years. I have participated in many Rotary and Rotaract community projects and events, and I love the fellowship, leadership, and networking opportunities that I have experienced through Rotary. My involvement in this organization thus far has changed my life, and I would like to be more active, as a Rotarian, despite any limitations I may have due to my location now or in the future and due to my busy schedule. I'm so honored to be able to continue serving others in Rotary through this club!"

The Power of Images
Gardens and Culture
Part of the fun of being in an eclub is the interest members have in seeing lots of different places around the world. My wife and I went with close friends and their kiddos to northwest Washington and Vancouver Island last week. The trip was highlighted by a visit to Butchart Gardens near Victoria, which has all sorts of amazing flowers, including an area with an Italian theme, another designed in Japanese style, and much more.Members, if you've been somewhere this summer (winter for you, Richard) that fascinates you, let's share it with the club! Crater Lake (National Geographic)
The picture below is similar to another we recently highlighted by our Camera Czar Keith Marsh, but this one from Crater Lake from the North Rim looking south has the distinction of having been recognized by National Geographic as part of the Your Shot Photo of the Day program last week.Added comment from Keith: "The lights on the horizon are from Klamath Falls, Oregon, about 60 miles away."Very cool!

The Beauty of the Potluck
There's something beautiful about having a bunch of people bring food to a get-together. Last Saturday, a group of us shared food, ideas, and fun, including bringing several folks in via Hangout.From left to right are eClub Rotary Foundation Chair Frank Trippichio, Guest Navid Fattahi, Guest Maryam Russel, Treasurer Allen Thompson, Membership Chair Shags Shagrin with Truffle, President Rushton Hurley, Member Yvonne Kwan, Member Gene Tognetti, District Rotary Foundation Chair Cecelia Babkirk, and President-Elect and Webmaster Mitty Chang. District Newsletter
Our district's fearless leader, Susan Valenta, tells in this month's district newsletter about her trip with a team from our district to Monterrey, Mexico, last March to help distribute wheelchairs to families in need. Building on that project is her service goal for this year.As a district, we hope to fill a container with 280 wheelchairs (at $150 each) to ship to Mexico and beyond, where Rotarians working with us will help with the distribution. Plans are still coming together for that, so watch for news from the district about being part of the trip to Mexico in the spring.You can find Governor Susan's July newsletter and this story at this link.
The World of Rotary
Rotarian Action Group Against Child Slavery
In June Carol Metzker of the Rotarian Action Group Against Child Slavery introduced us to the efforts of their group. The chairman of the group, Mark Little of England, released their June newsletter this week, so those of you following this topic can read of good news in Indonesia and bad news in Delhi. Thanks, Mark, Carol, and RACSRAG for all you are doing to protect children around the world.
Letting Children Be Children
Interact Clubs are Rotary-sponsored programs for highschoolers that do all sorts of good in their communities and beyond. The Interact community in our district is the largest and most active in the world, I've been told, and this story from Rotary's convention blog captures that well.Children in poverty-stricken and war-torn places often have very little to play with, and Interactors in our district decided that investing in ultra-durable soccer balls would be a good way to help those children have a chance to play with something safe.Read the full story at the District 5170 site and at the end of today's meeting, add some kudos in the comments below for our amazing Interact students!

Last Friday, Rotary released this video, called, "Nigeria One Year Milestone."
We who are now Rotarians are the Rotarians who will end this terrible disease - let's keep these efforts going!
Service Time
Last week of the month! If you haven't reported service you've done in the last few weeks, now is the time. Last week, we learned during the hangout done during the potluck that Chris Cochrane is recovering well from a surgery. I asked him what it was, and he said he'd had some "stuff that didn't belong" removed. Works for me!

This week we hear from Eve Dolkart of Adelante Foundation about the work they are doing in Central America to help pull communities out of poverty. Adelante Foundation is a nonprofit microfinance institution focused on empowering women to develop and grow their own sustainable businesses throughout Honduras. We invite you to learn more about our mission, our history, the women we serve, and the financial and educational services we provide. The word adelante is Spanish for ahead, or forward. Find out how we work to empower the entrepreneurial women of Honduras to move their lives, their families, and their communities forward!Eve Dolkart is the International Development Coordinator for Adelante Foundation. She received an undergraduate degree in economics and an MPA from Clark University in Worcester, MA. Eve has always been passionate about poverty alleviation and being immersed in new cultures, and is currently based in La Ceiba, Honduras.
