Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!
Here’s a message from our Club President.
Members and guests,
Welcome fellow Rotarians and friends and welcome to the new Rotary Year 2022-2023!
I want to begin by expressing my heartfelt thanks to Brett for his service as President during the past year. Brett and his team guided the club through the global pandemic and other challenges, and in the process, achieved amazing results. I would also like to congratulate each of the new Board members. I have already seen the energy, enthusiasm, and commitment that you bring to the Board and I look forward to serving with you.
One of our main goals as a club is to contribute to our vision. We are a global Rotary eClub with members from different continents and a number of different time zones. For this reason, during my year as your President, I hope to increase member engagement, allowing us to increase our service to our community and our world. We will explore new ways to connect with each other, taking into account how we are spread across the globe. To support this, I would like each member to be associated with, and active in, at least one of our committees. We will also establish new ways to consolidate and build our membership. Our members have talents that we would like to tap into in order to do more for our members. So let’s find every opportunity to show the value of each and every member. The stronger our membership is, the better we can serve! Additionally, as Rotarians, we recognize the positive change that youth and young adults can make in the world of Rotary and in general. Therefore, we will develop leadership development activities, community and international service projects, and we will enrich and foster cultural understanding.
I think it’s important that our club reflects the global communities we serve. More varied perspectives in our clubs and in our leadership will help Rotary remain relevant in a changing and difficult world. Without question, COVID-19 has posed new and previously unimaginable challenges for Rotary. Ensuring access to healthcare was and is still critical and involves several challenges. But within every challenge is perhaps an even greater opportunity. The global pandemic has made all of us much more aware of the importance of healthcare than we were before. As a result, we will think about how the club can focus on helping tackle medical challenges and setting an example for others. We believe our support can really make a difference to those who need our help most and can transform lives through meaningful service projects.
This is a brief overview of our priorities.
Sustain and increase membership activities
Implement successful service projects leveraging technology for better health outcomes
Expand our target audience by promoting & driving participation in our projects
Encourage vocational activities
Support the Foundation through program participation and community/international projects
These are just a few of the objectives we're pursuing, and we see the potential for some incredibly great outcomes.
In closing may I say that I am proud to be a Rotarian! This is a feeling that I really want to share with you all in the new Rotary year. I am coming from a long family tradition of Rotary service and community involvement, so I am honored and humbled to serve as President of the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley for the new year. I know it will not be easy but, with the help and support of my Board members and fellow Club members, I will do my best to meet the challenge.
We can be proud of our capacity to adapt and unite, and we will continue to embrace our motto, Service Above Self, every day. I know Rotary means different things in different parts of the world, but we all share our core values and are united by The Four-Way Test. So, I encourage you to take an active role in sharing these ideas and imagining Rotary. “Imagine, a world that deserves our best,” as our Rotary International President Jennifer Jones said. Let’s get out there and join in service while enjoying our time together!

Guests, we are happy to have you join us this week!
As we see it, our flexibility as an online, asynchronous club allows a special type of service to Rotarians around the world: we make it easier for anyone to strive for and maintain 100% attendance. That keeps you engaged with Rotary's events and ideas, and provides a moment of inspiration for devoting your creativity, talents, and resources to good causes.
You are certainly not required to pay anything in order to attend our meetings. However, if you would like to make a small contribution to our service efforts, you are welcome to do so in our secure Happy Dollars section down the page. This could be what you normally pay at your own club's meetings for lunch, for example. Any amount is welcome, but first and foremost, we're happy you've joined us, and hope you will share with others who we are and what we do to help inspire Service Above Self.
And don't forget to fill out our attendance form so you get an email you can pass on to your club's secretary!
The Four Way Test
The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships.
Of the things we think, say or do
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Weekly Funny with Shags.
We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Steven "Shags" Shagrin !
Dry Hair Treatment
Trying to control my dry hair, I treated my scalp with olive oil before washing it. Worried that the oil might leave an odor, I washed my hair several times.
That night when I went to bed, I leaned over to my husband and asked, "Do I smell like olive oil?"
"No," he said, sniffing me. "Do I smell like Popeye?"
Weekly Inspiration
Every week we share a short video highlighting innovation, education, entrepreneurship, or whatever we think might inspire you to see the world in new ways.
What inspires you to overcome barriers? This Smithsonian piece about Bessie Coleman, the first Black American licensed pilot, is one that may strengthen your resolve to overcome something difficult.
Through a Rotarian's Lens
Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. In this section Member Keith Marsh shares his incredible photography!
If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.
Thanks to Shags for sharing this photo from The Audubon Photo contest. It is a Western Grebe with two chicks fighting over a fish. It was taken by Peter Shen of San Jose with a Sony A1 with a teleconverter at f/7.1, 1/1000 sec at ISO 500. Most importantly, his timing was perfect.

Foraging Secrets Episode #3 - 5 Edible Parts of the White Pine Tree
YouTube has interesting "Channels". This video is from "Eat the Planet": "The eastern white pine tree(Pinus strobus) is a very underutilized wild edible. In this video I go over 5 edible components of the white pine tree." And if you're as old or older than me, you may remember Euell Gibbons for Post Grape Nuts cereal talking about all the things in nature that are edible. Just look for his old commercials on YouTube, such as this one, which has a somewhat crazy ending! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGp7OzTaoe4

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)
Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!
This section is usually updated in the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.
Program: Unlocking Kelp Cultivation as a Nature-Based Solution by Underpinning it with Science
Speaker: Samantha Deane
Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others.
The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley seeks to explore perspectives on service from across the world. The views of the speakers in our programs are their own, and unless stated otherwise, are not necessarily reflective of the views of our eClub nor Rotary International.
If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directly or submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!
This week's speaker, Samantha Deane, was born and raised in Argentina but left to study Law and Economics at Durham University in the UK. Immediately after graduating she worked as a Latin American Equity broker on the trading floor of Merrill Lynch. After eight years she resigned to work in the design and art world both in London and in Dubai. She lived in the Middle East for eleven years before moving to The Netherlands with her Dutch husband and three children in 2017.
She joined Kelp Blue, a start-up looking to re-wild the oceans and sequester CO2 eighteen months ago, as she wanted to be part of the solution to climate change. She initially worked as fundraising manager but seeing the enormous gaps in the science around offshore giant kelp cultivation, set up the Kelp Forest Foundation in 2021.The foundation is mainly focused on researching the ecosystem services and impact of cultivated giant kelp but is also involved in ocean education and capacity building, initially in Namibia. The Kelp Forest Foundation was selected earlier this year as one of the Top 12 Global Innovators in the World Economic Forum’s Uplink Blue Carbon Challenge for Blue Carbon. Samantha was recently asked to speak at Monaco Ocean Week on the subject of Measuring the Impact of Kelp Cultivation on biodiversity.
The Kelp Forest Foundation is on a mission to independently and transparently establish the value of cultivated giant kelp forests as a powerful solution that restores ocean health, mitigates climate change and increases marine biodiversity. It also seeks to remove the barriers that exist now in scaling the seaweed cultivation sector.
Its purpose is to prove the ecosystem and carbon sink services of kelp, doing this by:
driving forward the science that quantifies its carbon sequestration and biodiversity-building potential; establishing giant kelp seed banks able to be leveraged by conservation efforts and future giant kelp cultivators, to address lack of starting material; supporting the development of cutting-edge ocean technology to decrease the cost of research; and increasing public awareness and ocean education to create the next generation of ocean lovers and seaweed cultivators.
Members and guests, please welcome Samantha Deane!
