Message from our President

As the 2024-2025 President of our Club, I extend a warm welcome to our members, friends, and guests. Thanks for joining our weekly meeting.

WEEKLY FUNNY WITH SHAGS

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Steven "Shags" Shagrin!

The Forgetful Actor

An actor had been out of work for years because he always forgot his lines. One day he got a phone call from a director who wanted him for an important part in a play. All the actor had to say was, “Hark! I hear the cannon roar!"

Opening night arrived, and while he waited in the wings, the actor muttered to himself, “Hark! I hear the cannon roar! Hark! I hear the cannon roar!" The time for the entrance finally came. As the actor made his appearance onstage, he heard a loud BOOOOM! He turned around and said, “What the heck was that?”

INSPIRATION

There's something extremely cool about a person following what fascinates her to a place of something new. In this case, it's Katy Ayers in Nebraska, and she shows how to create a canoe (and more) out of careful encouragement of mushrooms.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

What Does it Feel Like to Die?

New research found out what it FEELS like when you die. Scientists were able to study the brains of people who were being resuscitated with CPR and then interviewed the ones who CAME BACK TO LIFE to figure out what it feels like to die.

Club News For Members

Our Club News and Member links are now on the Members Only ClubRunner Site and are emailed weekly as a Club Bulletin. Please make sure your email address is current on ClubRunner.

Members, be sure to read our newsletter sent separately to your email address on file in ClubRunner each Monday. In it, you will find updates and information about what our members are up to, club activities, projects, Happy Dollars, news from the District, and ways of supporting The Rotary Foundation. We also email your Dues notices using the ClubRunner email.

Our Monday newsletters provide vital updates, so to stay informed, please ensure your email is current on ClubRunner and add mailservice@clubrunner.ca to your address book so it does not go into Spam.

PROGRAM: Girls + Social Media: A Student Action Research Initiative

SPEAKER: Eric Walters and students

We bring you a new program every week on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education and how they contribute to service to others.

The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley seeks to explore perspectives on service from across the world. The views of the speakers in our programs are their own and, unless stated otherwise, are not necessarily reflective of the views of our eClub or Rotary International.

If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directly or submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!

This is our second of three weeks featuring young people engaged in important work - in this case, questions about teens and social media.

Researcher Danah Boyd once wrote, "Most teens aren't addicted to social media; they're addicted to each other." Join us for an engaging workshop showcasing the results of a student-designed action research project, completed in partnership with ICGS, that explores the impact of social media use on girls' self-esteem, mental health, and relationships. Participants will hear from the student researchers and will review the research methodology, and, most importantly, actionable strategies for girls, parents, guardians, and educators. Discover how we can foster healthier social media habits and empower girls to navigate the digital landscape confidently and resiliently.

Eric Walters is the Director of STEM Education at Marymount School of New York, where he teaches Physics, Atmospheric Science, and several technology electives. He also serves as the faculty moderator for the Tech + Social Media Team, which coordinates the STEMxYouth Summit as well as the 2024 Girls + Social Media Survey. As an Apple Distinguished Educator and a Google Certified Educator, he believes that transformative teaching and learning occurs when students (and teachers) construct their own knowledge, collaborate with peers, and represent that knowledge and understanding in ways that are meaningful to the learner, all while receiving authentic, relevant, robust, and holistic feedback.

Members and guests, please welcome students, Madeline and Lilly, along with their teacher, Eric Walters!

THE ATTENDANCE SURVEY

Thanks for reading and watching this week’s meeting. You have two last things to do before you’re done.

We have a very short attendance survey below for you to fill out to record your attendance.

Visiting Rotarians, this is how you can get an email receipt to pass along to your club’s secretary as proof that you’ve attended our meeting if you need it for makeup.

Non-Rotarian Guests, we would love to see who is dropping by our meetings! This part is optional for you. If you think you may want to join our eClub at some point in the future, we would strongly recommend you fill out the attendance form as it will improve your chances of success for your membership application.

For all members and guests — we strongly recommend and ask that you leave a comment in our comments area below. Tell us how you enjoyed the program. Ask this week’s speaker any questions you might have. Or just stop by and say hello and tell us where you’re from!

Important: Once you submit the Attendance Survey below, please make sure you see the confirmation message. If you get an error message instead, please try the 'submit' button again, and if that doesn't work, please refresh the page and fill out the form again. Thanks!
