Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from President Tzviatko:

President  Tzviatko

Guests, we are happy to have you join us this week!

As we see it, our flexibility as an online, asynchronous club allows a special type of service to Rotarians around the world: we make it easier for anyone to strive for and maintain 100% attendance. That keeps you engaged with Rotary's events and ideas, and provides a moment of inspiration for devoting your creativity, talents, and resources to good causes.

You are certainly not required to pay anything in order to attend our meetings. However, if you would like to make a small contribution to our service efforts, you are welcome to do so in our secure Happy Dollars section down the page. This could be what you normally pay at your own club's meetings for lunch, for example. Any amount is welcome, but first and foremost, we're happy you've joined us, and hope you will share with others who we are and what we do to help inspire Service Above Self.

And don't forget to fill out our attendance form so you get an email you can pass on to your club's secretary!

The Four Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships.

Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?

  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”

This week's jokes are brought to you courtesy of our very own Shags! Thank you for the link to 50 amazing jokes. I was laughing all day!

Why do artists constantly feel cold?
Because they're surrounded by drafts!

How do you catch a school of fish?
With bookworms!

What did one penny say to another penny?
We make cents!

Weekly Inspiration

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

If you love model trains, you will lose your mind on our visit to Miniatur Wunderland. There are more than 1,000 trains traveling 16,000 kilometers of track at the world’s largest model railway, located in Hamburg, Germany. But it’s not just trains. This small-scale world of wonder features mini versions of landscapes ranging from the canals of Venice to a lit-up Las Vegas. It’s also home to the world’s largest model airport, and hundreds of flights take off every day. Enough with the description. It’s time to explore this spectacular creation with our intrepid guide, Great Big Story producer Jacob Harrell. Stick around for the choose-your-own-adventure portion of the trip. We’re offering you the chance for a deeper dive into Miniatur Wunderland’s tiny versions of Las Vegas, Scandinavia, Switzerland and Venice.

Member  Spotlight

This week's Member Spotlight is Emily Paver! Here is what they have been up to lately:

Along with my partner, Bobby, and several coworkers, I was able to participate in the Cincinnati March for Racial Justice, held downtown on Sunday, June 2. What an honor it was to walk alongside approximately four thousand other masked activists (and new friends), to peacefully protest racial injustices in our city and across the United States.

There truly aren’t words to describe the emotions of marching through the heart of Cincinnati, down streets plagued with a deep history of homelessness, gentrification, and police brutality against the Black community. Those steps we took together--to kneel silently in front of the Justice Center--are hopefully the first of many into a brighter future.

I am humbled to have been a small part of this demonstration and commit myself to continue the daily anti-racism work needed for lasting change. Much love and peace to you all, dear friends. - Emily Paver

Through a Rotarian's Lens

Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. In this section Member Keith Marsh shares his incredible photography!

If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.

This is a photo Ferheen shared on Slack. I like it on several levels and she approved that I make some minor changes and share on this week's program. The composition is very strong with the diagonal perspective. She was clever to stand near the side windows. The subject in a nearly empty train car is a man with a mask and on a cell phone (timely and journalistic). I cropped it to a 2 x 1 aspect ratio to highlight the diagonal and put the subject is a better position. I then converted it to black and white in Nik software.

Learn Something New

This section is curated by members Shags Shagrin and Rushton Hurley and aims to teach our members and guests something new, fun and useful! If you have any ideas on a fun trick or skill you'd like to share please contact Rushton or Shags.

An Great Grilling Tip!

Whether it's burgers, steaks, fish, veggies -- whenever you want a short and hot searing heat for, a grill alone is not great. Why? You'll see! I'm going to test this on a gas grill and will let you know in my comments for a meeting (Shags). You'll need to click on the start arrow to view the video.

Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Rushton from San Jose, CA, USA  reporting on a chat with Mark D from New York, NY, USA

We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Relay for Life

Thanks again to everyone who contributed messages, photos, and donations to help with our club's fight against cancer! The money raised ($1122.62) goes to research, education, and programs for patients and caregivers. It makes a difference, and we want to honor all 35 members who took part:

When the event rolls around in October (hopefully), we'll look to get as many of our members who are able to join our team for walking.

Keep spreading hope!

Help the vulnerable in your community during COVID-19

Helping Hands is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the most at-risk people in our community stay safe at home, while getting the supplies they need. It works by connecting local volunteers who can run critical errands, such as grocery shopping, with the most vulnerable members of our community.  If you or someone you know needs help, fill out a request. If you are healthy and able to volunteer, please sign up to help. Together, we can help flatten the curve of COVID-19 by protecting our community’s most vulnerable.

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)

Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!

This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

Catherine A made a $25 donation.
We are grateful for the good folks who have posted "How-to" videos on YouTube. So, far, we have learned how to fix Fluidmaster siphon valves on two noisy toilets; how to rewire our older outside landline box until the repairman arrives next week; how to adjust, fix and replace our sprinkler valves; how to repair a new rattling sound in our dryer (it was a loose bolt) and how to attach the copper water line to our refrigerator ice cube maker. (We now have ice!) Best, I learned how to cut my hair and my partner's! He says he now looks like George Peppard. (I think he is more handsome than George P., however!)

Rory Olsen made a $20 donation.
Weather is mid-June hot. Took Jazzy to the vet yesterday. She is fine for her age, but managed to charm the vet and the vet's helper by clinging to her father.
Please apply my gift to polio plus.

Selected Comments

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.

ShagsCA said:

Loved the program - again! - on top of another great meeting. As Sarah mentioned, even something as simple as using a pepper mill for fresh ground pepper is a challenge for some. I was delighted to find and send her something that makes it easier -- a 4" pocket-sized one-handed spring-operated pepper mill! With restaurants re-opening during the continued COVID-19 concern, don't be surprised to not see salt or pepper on the tables due to multiple hands on them. I got one of these for myself so I don't have to ask for pepper.

Rushton Hurley said:

What a cool bell story about the Paccard Foundry! The Rotary blog post about Peace Scholar Megumi Nishikura was strong as well - her film "Hafu" is available on Amazon Prime. Keith, that chrome bumper photo is awesome, too, as is the CWR report between Ferheen and Mark.

Sarah, great work with the presentation. I followed a link and listened to the first episode of the Disarming Disability podcast, and ended up adding it to my June newsletter for educators (https://www.nextvista.org/n.... I hope lots of young people hear your stories and see new possibilities for themselves as a result!

Mitty Chang  said:

Sarah, I heard you were the presenter this week and I wanted to make sure to take a pause from my crazy work schedule and tune in. What an incredible presentation! Thank you for taking the time to share your story. You're such an inspiration. I'm grateful we got connected a few years at at the RI Convention, and it's great to have you as a member of our club. You're amazing! Keep it up!

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!

Program: Adopting Meaningful Change Meaningfully

Speaker: Jesse Lubinsky, Micah Shippee, and Christine Lion-Bailey

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week.

The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley seeks to explore perspectives on service from across the world. The views of the speakers in our programs are their own, and unless stated otherwise, are not necessarily reflective of the views of our eClub nor Rotary International.

If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directly or submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!

We are experiencing unwelcome and unwanted change on an unprecedented level during the COVID19 pandemic. Disruptive change can lead to positive growth if judiciously approached. The framework the Ready Learner One team has developed works to provide a critical lens to find, support, and develop meaningful solutions to a variety of challenges using emergent technologies. Together, these three authored Reality Bytes: Innovative Learning Using Augmented and Virtual Reality.

Jesse Lubinsky is the Chief Learning Officer of Ready Learner One LLC. Prior to entering the education space, he was a technology consultant for Fortune 500 companies with clients including Microsoft, JP Morgan Chase, and IBM Global Services. Before that, he served as a Director of Technology & Innovation and Chief Information Officer for a public school district. His work has included presentations across North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia. Jesse is also co-host of the Partial Credit Podcast.

Micah Shippee, PhD is the Chief Executive Officer of Ready Learner One LLC and author of "WanderlustEDU: An Educator’s Guide to Innovation, Change, and Adventure." Micah is listed by EdTech Digest as one of the 100 top influencers in EdTech for 2019-2020. He serves the education community in several capacities including as the Eastern US lead for the Google Earth Education Experts team, as a Google Certified Innovator, and as a National Geographic Educator. As an author, consultant, and keynote speaker, he focuses on the adoption of innovation through the development of learning cultures that embrace change.

Christine Lion-Bailey is the Chief Strategy Officer of Ready Learner One, LLC, an innovative solutions provider for learning and training. Christine sits on the advisory board for The Transformative Leadership Program at Pace University Lubin School of Business. Christine is also author of an upcoming Esports book due out this fall. Christine serves as an instructional mentor for corporate partners seeking to transform their learning and training experiences by adopting innovative practices.

Members and guests, please welcome Christine, Micah, and Jesse!
