Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from President-Elect Tzviatko:

Greetings Rotarians and Guests,As I sit in a coffee shop in central Sofia, Bulgaria writing this, I am filled with appreciation for diversity. When I was growing up in Bulgaria (many years ago) you could rarely see foreigners here, but now all it takes to hear languages of all sorts is just a quick stroll down main street.I also appreciate the diversity of backgrounds, ages, cultures, languages and geographies that our club offers and I'm thankful for being a part of this group with all of you.We are nearing the beginning of a new Rotary year, and it is fitting that we focus on the good work Rotary is doing around the world. This week's speaker will tell us about the Rotary Club of Jawalakhel and the impact it's had on people in Nepal.Enjoy the program and don't forget to let us know you were here by filling out the attendance survey.

Sincerely,

Tzviatko

President-Elect, Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley

Guests, we are happy to have you join us this week!

As we see it, our flexibility as an online, asynchronous club allows a special type of service to Rotarians around the world: we make it easier for anyone to strive for and maintain 100% attendance. That keeps you engaged with Rotary's events and ideas, and provides a moment of inspiration for devoting your creativity, talents, and resources to good causes. You are certainly not required to pay anything in order to attend our meetings. However, if you would like to make a small contribution to our service efforts, you are welcome to do so in our secure Happy Dollars section down the page. This could be what you normally pay at your own club's meetings for lunch, for example. Any amount is welcome, but first and foremost, we're happy you've joined us, and hope you will share with others who we are and what we do to help inspire Service Above Self. And don't forget to fill out our attendance form so you get an email you can pass on to your club's secretary!

Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”

Through a Rotarian's Lens

Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. In this section Member Keith Marsh shares his incredible photography! If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.

There has been a lot of news lately about all the climbers on Mt Everest so I thought I would share one of my mountain photos. Denali (formerly Mt McKinley) in Alaska is North America's highest peak. During my visit there in 2014, we got a rare glimpse of the mountain that is usually enshrouded in clouds.

Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Ferheen from Santa Clara, CA, USA reporting on a chat with Maxi from Mountain View, CA, USA.I had the pleasure of chatting with Maxi this month for my CWaR! Did you know that Maxi works for the Gmail team at Google? We talked quite a bit about the inner workings of Gmail and I expressed how excited I was to learn that you can now schedule emails to be sent in the future!!! You can pretend to be working at 2am - or so he said ;)There's another REALLY cool feature that he showed me how to use - the ""snooze"" button! You can select any email to be sent back to your inbox at a later date, especially an email that you don't need to deal with right away and you want to keep your inbox clean. I love this feature too.We also talked about Rotary and how we got involved with the organisation, as well as some things we would like to see happen in our club, like having more socials :) We are working on planning a hike in August so we hope that the Bay Area folks will be able to join! Thanks for such an awesome CWaR, Maxi!

We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)

Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!

This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

Rory Olsen made a $20 donation.Today started off bumpy, but has picked up steam as the day progressed. All is well.

Rushton Hurley made a $20 donation.I attended member Cecelia Babkirk's going away party on Saturday the 8th, and loved hearing what she's learned about Ethiopia and the teaching she'll be doing. Happy to donate in her honor!

Share your happy dollars thoughts with us and help with doing good around the world.

Selected Comments

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.

Monique le Conge Ziesenhenne said:Such a diverse and interesting program, once again. Thanks to Melissa for such a great presentation! I wonder, though, if the program committee is trying to tell us something since we've had a couple of programs about how to write more concisely, clearly, easily, over the past couple of months! Ha! I am always grateful for such an awesome Rotary club!

Tzviatko Chiderov said:

The A.J. Jacobs gratitude video was very cool.Melissa, thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom with us. I like your thoughts on how purchasing decisions are often much more emotional than logical, and on stressing the importance of talking to customers early on.

TLaGarde said:

Fantastic presentation this week. Thank you Melissa! The detail and specificity of your business' journey thus far was wonderful. Thanks for talking about ways to bring in low risk initial funding. I enjoyed hearing about the Canadian government grants/loans your firm has been able to access - so helpful for Canadian startups. A great presentation and thanks to Roger for moderating and the team for bringing Melissa to speak to the club this week. Keith and Yvonne, thank you both too for your wonderful contributions each week. I look forward to seeing them at the start of each meeting! And Nate, thank you for your wonderful video in Japan. I learned a lot from all of the contributors this week - thanks so much!

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!

Program: Life Cycle and Telemedicine Projects in Nepal

Speaker: Ajang Bhandari

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week.

Ajang (AJ) Bhandari is a member of the Rotary Club of Jawalakhel and he presents to us all the amazing work his Rotary Club does for the people of Nepal. Truly inspiring, the Rotary Club of Jawalakhel has done almost 30 projects in their country, supporting their most rural villages. Their most impactful project is the Life Cycle Project in which, through the help of partner clubs in the US, they provide services throughout the villager's lives - from maternal health to nutrition for children to education and work opportunities for women. Please take the time to listen to AJ talk about the power of his Rotary club - they truly embody "Service Above Self."

Share your thoughts or ask our speaker a question in the comments at the bottom of this meeting page!
