Message from our President
Greetings Members and Friends of Rotary e-Club of Silicon Valley. As President of our Club, I want to welcome you all today.
WEEKLY FUNNY WITH SHAGS
We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Steven "Shags" Shagrin!
Beam Me Up
How many ears does Captain Kirk have?
The correct answer: Three...
The left ear, the right ear, and the final front ear.
INSPIRATION
There's something quite fascinating about watching all sorts of wildlife cross a log bridge. A guy in Pennsylvania set up a webcam that captures footage day and night of bears, ducks, deer, raccoons, and more hanging out, stepping across, arguing with each other, or swimming by. Great stuff!
LEARN SOMETHING NEW
The MOST Self-Destructive Habit | Simon Sinek
Comparing ourselves to others might be natural, but it's also deadly. By taking an infinite approach, and reframing your competitors as worthy rivals, the success of your peers becomes fuel for your own growth as opposed to the source of your insecurity.
Club News (Members)
Our Club News and Member links are now on the Members Only ClubRunner Site and are emailed weekly as a Club Bulletin. Please make sure your email address is current on ClubRunner.

PROGRAM: Don't Get Pulled Under by the A.I Hype Wave
SPEAKER: Tim Allen
Every week we bring you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others.
The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley seeks to explore perspectives on service from across the world. The views of the speakers in our programs are their own, and unless stated otherwise, are not necessarily reflective of the views of our eClub or Rotary International.
If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directly or submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” – George Santayana, The Life of Reason, 1905."
Our speaker, Tim Allen, joined Wharton Research Data Services in 2008, after working for local companies and starting a few of his own. He began programming at age six during a summer camp his mother won in a raffle. Tim currently serves as an organizer of the Philadelphia Python Users Group, DjangoCon US, and as a member of the Python Software Foundation and Django Software Foundation.
Tim is an avid hockey fan, was the first person to sell real-world items for virtual micro currency long before Bitcoin, is an avid open-source contributor, and enjoys beating his head against brick walls (as demonstrated by his passion for coding, cycling in Philadelphia, and never-ending quest to get his cat to behave). A lifelong Philadelphia resident, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1996 with an individualized major, "Computer Aided Information Acquisition."
Congratulations, technologists! We have reached a new record for the height of the peak of inflated expectations with the hype surrounding "A.I." If you believe the recent press, "A.I." is going to be capable of everything, with some even talking of immortality. It is wonderful to be excited about new technology available to us, but this is at a level I have never seen in my career. There have been numerous lessons from the past that illustrate why we should avoid these levels of hype.
Is "A.I." going to change everything? Tim doesn’t buy it, and in this talk, he’ll explain why.
Members and guests, please welcome Tim Allen!
