Weekly Inspiration
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.
Every child deserves to celebrate their birthday. But for families living in the shelter system, having resources to throw a bash isn’t always attainable. That’s where Schinnell Leake comes in. With her non-profit Extra-Ordinary Birthdays, she partners with shelters to throw personalized birthday parties for kids, giving them a moment to celebrate themselves. The program aims to give families a little bit of hope, a chance at normalcy and a whole lot of cake.

Through a Rotarian's Lens
Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. In this section Member Keith Marsh shares his incredible photography!If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.
Besides photography, one of my interests is gardening at my home in Marin County. This year has been spectacular for blooms because of the heavy winter rains. As my roses were starting to bloom, I wanted to capture the progression of two roses blooming at different times over a five day period. To make sure I was able to get the full blooms in focus with a small aperature setting, I used a technique called Focus Stacking. This involves taking several photos at very finely different focuses from closest to furthest from the lens. The multiple images are processed in Photograph with a stacking feature so that the most sharp part of each photo is included in the final image. I then took the before and after photos to create this montage.
Coffee With a Rotarian
A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we have Rory from Houston, TX, USA reporting on a chat with Rushton from San Jose, CA, USA.
Rushton and I met for about forty-five minutes very recently. We had a good time discussing Texas and small towns in general. One idea that Rushton mentioned was a foundation that provided incubators for business ideas spawned by students in rural high schools, with funding from the community for the most promising ones. Obviously the incubator would be involved in the process and would take a piece of the pie.The other interesting thing about our get together was a visit by my cat, Jazzmine. If my recollection is correct, she has made a guest appearance in everyone of my CWRs.

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

Keith Marsh said:Conrad, Great program. As a math major, this topic is something I have given some thought. I am also convinced that nearly everything in the Universe has a basis in mathematics or can be described by mathematics in some way. I often ask people if they can name anything that does not relate to mathematics and then wait to watch as their eyes glaze over. When I think about mathematics, I don't think about numbers or equations, I think about how things relate to one another. The basis of all mathematics is logic. From logic, we can build all of the other disciplines from arithmetic, geometry, algebra, statistics, trigonometry, probability, calculus, and quantum mechanics. I challenge you to look around your room and try to name something that was not created by or has a basis in mathematics.

Presentation from Conrad was quite thought provoking. Very progressive thinking and would be great to see this initiative taken on board by educational systems. It takes me back to my school days when I used to think quite a bit about if what I was learning in school would help in the real world. Keith - I am really enjoying your photos as well.
Mark Dohn said:Thank you Conrad. As a student who always struggled with math, your concepts and ideas for math education are exciting. I hope that we have the opportunity to see some of them implemented in schools soon. Fantastic picture by Keith, and the video of creating small avalanches at Big Bear to keep skiers safe by using old technology was great.

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week.
People in the developed world are living so long now that they often live after their career as long as they lived during their career. What to do with all that time? Retirement is said with a sense of irony. Most people retire from life and the exceptional person learns in life that no matter what your birthdate is (your real age}, your actual age can be quite different. Some people learn how to stay young. It is with their attitudes and actions towards life and being involved in living their lives, including after their career has ended.Such a person is our speaker today, Cecelia Babkirk who is proceeding to the next stage in her life. Cecelia is a member of our club and a long term Rotarian. She has worked with Rotary Foundation for years as her contribution to improving the world that we live in.Open your eyes and ears to learn what Cecelia has learnt about life and about making the transition to the next phase.
