Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from President Elect of the Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA Kim Covill, Charter President Rushton, and President Tzviatko:

President Elect of the Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA Kim Covill, Charter President Rushton, and President Tzviatko

Guests, we are happy to have you join us this week!

As we see it, our flexibility as an online, asynchronous club allows a special type of service to Rotarians around the world: we make it easier for anyone to strive for and maintain 100% attendance. That keeps you engaged with Rotary's events and ideas, and provides a moment of inspiration for devoting your creativity, talents, and resources to good causes. You are certainly not required to pay anything in order to attend our meetings. However, if you would like to make a small contribution to our service efforts, you are welcome to do so in our secure Happy Dollars section down the page. This could be what you normally pay at your own club's meetings for lunch, for example. Any amount is welcome, but first and foremost, we're happy you've joined us, and hope you will share with others who we are and what we do to help inspire Service Above Self. And don't forget to fill out our attendance form so you get an email you can pass on to your club's secretary!

The Four Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships.Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?

  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”

Happy May! Can you believe we're already into another month? May is International Drum Month, so here are some jokes that can't be beat!

Why did the chicken join the band?Because she already had drumsticks!

Why are drummers excellent procrastinators?Because they like to beat around the bush!

A sheep, a drum, and a snake fall off a cliff. What sound do they make? Baaa-Dum-Tssss!

Weekly Inspiration

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

Ankara might be the capital city, but Kahramanmaraş is Turkey’s undisputed ice cream capital. Atilla Kanbur is the fourth generation in his family to make delicious Turkish ice cream, churning out 5 tons of the sweet stuff a day. What’s so special about Turkish ice cream? It’s stretchy, it’s sticky, oh, and it doesn’t melt.

Member  Spotlight

This week's Member Spotlight is Caleb LaPlante! Here is what they have been up to lately:

Coronavirus quarantines have been in effect here in Oregon since March 16th. My Real Estate business has ground to a halt, after I closed the deals already in escrow. We've enjoyed spending time at home together, my wife and I and our 7 year old son and 5 year old daughter. The kids are homeschooled, so their weekdays are largely the same as before. The weather has been great, which is a perk. I've also found the time to finally launch my Property Management business, which has been in the works since last year. I'm in a good place to hit the ground running with that this summer. I've resigned from my volunteer positions at Southern Oregon Air Academy, a non-profit organization I founded in 2017, as my full attention is now needed in my business when the economy winds back up again. All of SOAA's youth programs - drone racing, summer camps, flight instruction - have been cancelled for the time being, which is a big bummer, but of course necessary. Fundraising will be difficult moving forward, but the board is hopeful it's still possible to conduct activities later this year. Wishing everyone well. Glad to be afforded the opportunity for membership in our e-club during these uncertain, and difficult, times.

As mentioned in the greeting, and described below in the Happy Dollars section, we are asking for donations to assist the village of Seacacar in Guatemala. The people of Seacacar have been hard-hit by the lockdown as a result of COVID-19, and the villagers who would be earning money in other places in this time ahead of the September harvest have to stay home. The lost wages are normally the revenue that keeps the villagers fed. Here is a short video about the village and the role Kim's nonprofit, From Books to Brilliance, and our "parent club," the Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA, have played in helping them.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kbclqbu6bTMPlease consider a generous donation this week, as we work to help the village get enough food to last through this difficult time.

Through a Rotarian's Lens

Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. In this section Member Keith Marsh shares his incredible photography! If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.

Ferheen provides the background for this interesting photo: I took this picture in January 2017 when my brother came to visit me in Japan. If you remember last week, I explained a little bit about Fushimi Inari. This picture was also taken at the same shrine, but a different location. There is a little gift shop where you can purchase these little torii gates and write your company name on them for prosperity! A little more history about the shrine, Inari Ōkami is the Japanese spirit of foxes, fertility, rice, tea, sake, agriculture, industry, general prosperity and worldly success! So merchants and manufacturers come to this shrine to pray for success.

Learn Something New

This section is curated by members Shags Shagrin and Rushton Hurley and aims to teach our members and guests something new, fun and useful! If you have any ideas on a fun trick or skill you'd like to share please contact Rushton or Shags.

5-Minute Crafts

Amazing freezer tricks that will blow your mind -- if you have room from using up food stored these past few weeks.

Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Sandy from Fremont, CA, USA reporting on a chat with Rory from Houston, TX, USAThis month I had CWR with Rory and his beautiful cat Jasmine. Rory is a retired Judge but still sits for a few arbitration cases. We chatted about so many different topics from Rotary to Hurricane Katrina. We both agreed that CWR is a great program. We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Relay for Life

Hello, eclub! So many of you have shared moving stories of those you remember and those you honor as they struggle against cancer. We'll share those over the coming weeks, and today, we'll highlight a story from Brett and Angela:Here's a photo taken when Angela and I went to visit my grandmother in Singapore and spent some time with her in January this year. She beat breast cancer 20 years ago and has been fit and healthy ever since, so when we called her on Christmas Day we were startled to find out she had been hospitalised. In early January, test results came back showing she had late stage lung cancer which was a big shock to everyone. She started a new treatment whilst we were there and the good news is that she seems to be responding well and when we spoke with her on the phone recently she sounded much stronger. We hope that this treatment continues to work and that she will be able to defeat the cancer once again.

Honoring others and raising money for research, education, and programs for patients and caregivers is something we want every member of the club to be part of.

If you have yet to join in, it's not too late! You can send a message (to rushton@gmail.com) or donate (http://main.acsevents.org/goto/rushton) and when the in-person event rolls around in October (exact date to be determined), you can join in for the Relay for Life!

Help the vulnerable in your community during COVID-19

Helping Hands is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the most at-risk people in our community stay safe at home, while getting the supplies they need. It works by connecting local volunteers who can run critical errands, such as grocery shopping, with the most vulnerable members of our community.  If you or someone you know needs help, fill out a request. If you are healthy and able to volunteer, please sign up to help. Together, we can help flatten the curve of COVID-19 by protecting our community’s most vulnerable.Additional resources:

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week! This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

Rory Olsen made a $20 donation.Great weekend with sunny days and rainy nights. Jazzmine is asleep in my window, snoring in the sunlight. Last year the State of Texas started a program to help resolve disputes between caregivers and insurance companies, with retired judges serving as arbitrators. I got my first check today! Please apply my gift to Polio Plus.

Vandana Agrawal made a $Other Amount donation.Good health for all

Raquel D'Garay-Juncal made a $15 donation.Relay for Life in support of my friend Alexis Screen and her family!

This week, our Happy Dollars will go to buying food to help feed the villagers of Seacacar in Guatemala. As you learned in the greeting, this village has a strong connection to the Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA, from which seven of our charter members moved to help start our own club. The villagers would normally at this time of the year (between planting and harvest) be working in surrounding areas to earn money to buy food, but concerns over the coronavirus led the government to restrict certain kinds of movement, including that of the village laborers who would be working now. Please consider a gift that our contacts with From Books to Brilliance can pass along so the village will be able to have more food at this difficult time.[wufoo username="mightymitty" formhash="z1axxwbk1v5i25o" autoresize="true" height="758" header="show" ssl="true"]

Selected Comments

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.

Richard Knaggs said:

I completely resonate with what you are doing Les & Rachel. When children make an impact on the real world they find their purpose. Our children's imaginations are untapped and full of potential. Please read our story here... https://docs.google.com/document/d/17DgTBvbB6EYNIB6KBbW-nSPaxauC8E2vehXWEgAErGY/edit?usp=sharing. Perhaps we can connect.

Nathan Gildart  said:Les & Rachel, thank you so such for joining us! (Les, it was great to see your smiling face again and congratulations on the baby! I was really fortunate to see the FDS approach in Tokyo last summer. What I love is the emphasis on empathy and serving the users; since learning about design thinking as a teacher I notice I reference these kinds of things with my students when they are learning new topics - What might be the perspectives of the people we're learning about? It's an important process, and the story of the girl in Toronto is a great example of success! (and youth agency)

Happy Birthday to our first week of May babies! Love the BGS video as well - that's going to get a tweet! And Shags, Al Jolson was your grandfather's friend? How cool is that! You're famous by association! (and for the record, I think Ferheen did have a viral FB post, so which is the lie...?)

María Sol Casas said:Great meeting! Les & Rachel congratulations on your work! I really enjoy the stories that you share with us, very inspirational. I strongly believe that adressing real problems and challenges, and coming up with real solutions it's of great importance to develop competences to be successful. Gaining leadership skills in early ages really makes a difference!

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!

Program: Gamification 2.0: Learning and Innovating through Play

Speaker: Vince Siu

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week. The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley seeks to explore perspectives on service from across the world. The views of the speakers in our programs are their own, and unless stated otherwise, are not necessarily reflective of the views of our eClub nor Rotary International.

If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directlyor submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!

What is gamification? Traditionally it has meant borrowing concepts from games to spice up a product, service or campaign, usually taking the form of leaderboards, badges, points and levels. At Press Start Hong Kong, a game-changing consultancy, we think this definition is too simple and outdated - and there is so much more that we can learn from games. In this short presentation, we will go through an introduction of game design principles, our interpretation of gamification, and two core academic foundations of game-based program and curriculum design. We will share some case studies and stories from our portfolio to illustrate the power of games and show a glimpse of a compelling future where learning and innovation is hands-on, fun and engaging.Vince Siu is Founder and CEO at Epiphany & Labs, a boutique corporate and social innovation consultancy. He is Co-founder and Managing Partner at Press Start Hong Kong, a games consultancy, and leads Press Start Academy, its after-school education arm.Outside of work, in a voluntary capacity, Vince serves as Vice Curator of the Hong Kong hub of the World Economic Forum Global Shapers Community and runs its environmental sustainability project, SUSTAINHK.Members and guests, please welcome Vince Siu!
