Here’s a message from our Club President.
Welcome, everyone, to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!
Rotary connects 1.2 million members from around the world and it all started with Rotary’s Founder Paul Harris, who today celebrates his 153th birthday. He was only 37 years old when Rotary was founded and only 44 when his two-year term as the first President of Rotary International ended in 1912.
After 1912, Paul Harris had no formal position in Rotary. He was the founder of Rotary and continued to influence and inspire Rotary for the rest of his life, until he passed away in 1947.
We are a club that treasures stories. Each week, we share the stories of those who make us think in new ways; provide insights on new possibilities in an ever-changing world; and encourage us to spend our time, resources, and efforts to help those in need.

You never know...
A professor stood before his class of twenty senior organic biology students, about to hand out the final exam.
"I want to say that it's been a pleasure teaching you this semester. I know you've all worked extremely hard and many of you are off to medical school after summer. So that no one gets their GPA messed up because they might have been celebrating a bit too much this week, anyone who would like to opt-out of the final exam today will receive a 'B' for the test."
There was much rejoicing in the class as students got up, walked to the front of the class, and took the professor up on his offer. As the last taker left the room, the professor looked out over the handful of remaining students and asked, "Anyone else? This is your last chance."
One final student rose up and opted out of the final.
The professor closed the door and took attendance of those students remaining. "I'm glad to see you believe in yourselves," he said. "You all get 'A's."
Weekly Inspiration
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Member Cal Mann for CWR the other day and discovered he is a talented photographer. He agreed to let me share a few of his photos with the club. This woman is at a public market in Stip, North Macedonia where Cal served in the Peace Corp. He took it as a "hip shot" with his iPhone 7. Her posture and facial expression makes the photo and shows that all photos don't have to be perfectly composed or focused.

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)

This week's presentation examines the unseen micro-enterprises of the South African township economy through a socio-spatial lens. Through case studies, Andrew will illustrate the surprising diversity of these small businesses, provide insights into the spatial patterns in which these micro-enterprises are organised, and highlight some of the barriers that hinder the growth and formalisation of businesses in this largely under-reported segment of the South African economy.
Andrew Charman is a Co-Director of the Sustainable Livelihoods Foundation, specialist research, advisory and policy engagement organization. He trained as a sociologist and development economist, studying at the University of Cape Town and Cambridge University.
Andrew has worked across the Southern African region on addressing socio-economic development challenges in a broad range of contexts, both rural and urban. His current work focuses on: i) influencing public policy towards the township economy in support of informal micro-enterprises, ii) implementing development projects to foster economic growth and strengthen social cohesion, and iii) designing and implementing area-based projects to support the development of micro-enterprises and build social cohesion.
With co-authors Petersen and Govender, Andrew has recently published Township Economy: People, Spaces and Practices (HSRC, 2020). The book brings together a decade of research on micro-enterprises conducted in 10 townships in South Africa and Namibia. Members and guests, please welcome Andrew Charman!
