Message from our President

Greetings Members and Friends of Rotary e-Club of Silicon Valley. As President of our Club, I want to welcome you all today.

WEEKLY FUNNY WITH SHAGS

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Steven "Shags" Shagrin!

Call Anytime

An interim school superintendent, speaking at a city-wide PTA luncheon, assured members that he was always happy to hear from them about problems. He told them, "You can call me day or night, at this number . . ."

Suddenly there was a cry from the assistant superintendent. "Hey," he exclaimed, " that's MY number!"

INSPIRATION

Every week we share a short video highlighting innovation, education, entrepreneurship, or whatever we think might inspire you to see the world in new ways.

Here's a pendulum rendered using a computer graphics system. You might find it appealing from a physics, artistic, or musical perspective, or a combination of those, or not appealing at all!

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

Awesome Inventions by African Americans

Here's a short video about some African Americans scientist/inventors who've helped make all our lives more awesome.

  • Club Service Club Service is one of Rotary’s Avenues of Service.

The role of the Club Service or Club Administration committee is to perform the logistical tasks that help create a great club experience for both current and newly inducted members. Clubs need active, engaged members in order to provide service to their communities and attract new members. Offering members the opportunity to participate in service projects that are meaningful to them, creating meetings that are fun and interactive, recognizing Rotarians on their birthdays or other milestones, checking in with them if they have missed a few meetings, choosing meeting speakers that they enjoy, and helping them connect with one another and with other Rotary clubs are just a few of the ways to keep members engaged.

In general, this committee helps make your club run smoothly and your meetings successful. As such, duties may include: arranging speakers, setting meeting agendas, maintaining websites and social media, coordinating communication, and planning assemblies, socials and other events.

    • Remember, being a Rotarian means more than just being a member, being a Rotarian means you are willing to do Rotary work. Please volunteer! If interested in working on a club committee (Membership, Club Service, Programs, Foundation, Youth Service, Mini-Grants, Budget & Finance) please let President Nick or President-Elect Mike know ASAP!

  • TRF & Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY)

It’s not too late. Have you received and returned your 2024-2025 TRF Pledge Card that was sent via email by TRF Chair Phil?

  • Help our club join others in District 5170 to achieve 100% EREY. Only a $25.00 donation (more is welcome if you can) per member will qualify us for the District EREY lottery. The winning clubs will earn extra DDF funds to help us in our efforts to make a better world. Remember, our DDF comes back to us through your TRF giving. Sign-up today for your TRF contribution - https://www.siliconvalleyrotary.com/trf

  • Is your latest information posted on our ClubRunner Members site at: https://portal.clubrunner.ca/8370/Page/ShowHomePage. After logging in, please be sure to access the MyClubRunner tab, and select My Profile. Please update your personal information here, which automatically updates our club directory.

  • Your Service Hours reporting will now take you directly to your ClubRunner Login and Entry for Volunteer Hours. From this point forward, your Service Hours will report to Rotary from ClubRunner.

  • TRF and EREY - There’s still time to consider your gift to Rotary for the annual TRF Fund. There are several ways to give: outright payment (Check or Credit Card), monthly payments billed to your credit card, allocation to several funds, etc. Our TRF Chair, Phil Dean will be in touch with us soon regarding your pledge and methods for collecting. Our Club is striving to be designated as “Every Year, Every Rotarian”. Your gift matters, either a small amount or a large amount (that is up to you - we will never tell you how much to give). A portion of our Annual fundgiving will come back to us for our DDF usage.

  • THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: 19 February

Winston Churchill: "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." - Directly echoes the philosophy of Rotary, of selfless giving and service above self.

HAPPY DOLLARS: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use.

PROGRAM: Changing a Family, One Girl at A Time

SPEAKER: Jeff Rivero

Every week we bring you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others.

The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley seeks to explore perspectives on service from across the world. The views of the speakers in our programs are their own, and unless stated otherwise, are not necessarily reflective of the views of our eClub or Rotary International.

If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directly or submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!

The Green That School (GTS) project is designed to engage a diverse, multi-faceted audience, encompassing local and global stakeholders. The project merges students from the Daraja Academy in Nanyuki, Kenya, and the Merced Union High School District in California in the United States. The initiative aims to empower young women by addressing critical issues such as gender violence, quality education, and arranged marriages while expanding their educational and professional horizons through Career Technical Education and advocating for women's involvement in STEM fields.

The project amplifies efforts with international organizations like the United Nations and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, Rotary, and the US Department of Education's Green Ribbon Schools program. Doing so aims to promote environmental and socially sustainable practices globally and nationally. The GTS project includes the worldwide nonprofit sector and educational institutions while modeling collaboration, curriculum development, and place-based learning. It enables others to enhance their academic goals and offer hands-on learning experiences. Its efforts resonate with individuals interested in various social and environmental issues and civic engagement by introducing them to societies with harsh social norms. The student-driven activity provides an accessible platform for anyone looking to engage, support, and promote the initiative's mission to impact care locally and globally.

Jeff Rivero is a US history and digital media teacher at Yosemite High School in Merced, California. He has integrated environmental and social equity education into a curriculum that requires civic engagement to advocate for policy changes, behavioral and procedural modifications, and equity in social, economic, and environmental issues. Mr. Rivero was selected as a United Nations Ambassador for the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2019 and advised students to lead an after-school program called the Junior Ambassadors. Rivero's innovative approach to integrating the SDGs, career technical guidance, history content standards for California, and environmental studies into the high school classroom has led to several awards, including the Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Education, the US Green Building Council K–12 Educator Award, and the Green California Schools Leadership Award. Take Action Global, a nonprofit organization focused on curbing climate change selected Mr. Rivero’s class for its School of Excellence awards. Prince William of Wales addressed the students virtually to recognize their work.

Members and guests, please welcome Mr Jeff Rivero
