Weekly Inspiration
Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.
What do Skrillex, David Bowie, Salt-N-Pepa and basically every drum and bass track have in common? They've all used the Amen break, a four-bar drum solo that has become the most sampled loop in music history. Recorded in 1969, the six second sample originates from the song “Amen, Brother” by The Winstons, a funk and soul group from Washington, D.C. For many years, the solo was buried deep in musical archives—that is until hip-hop pioneer Lou Flores, aka “Breakbeat Lou,” featured it on his compilation, “The Ultimate Breaks and Beats.” Once producers caught wind of the solo, it took off, going on to change music forever.

The Chinese New Year-"Year of the Pig" was February 5th. The parade in San Francisco will be February 23rd so there is still time to attend. This photo was take a few years ago. I used a delayed sync flash for the effect and was not offended by the "white face".
Coffee With a Rotarian
A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.
This week we have Nan from Penngrove, CA, USA reporting on a chat with Andrew from Oakland, CA, USA.
Andrew and I just finished a wonderful CWR!What an energetic and interesting individual! He explained his evolution as a grant-writer, stemming from his great love and skill of writing and literature. We then talked for a long time about our mutual love of books, and our gratitude for the existence of audio-literature! We exchanged ideas for next-books-on-audible, and talked about how we both love to read fiction as well as works focusing on human behavior, economics and neuroscience. We are hoping to connect in vivo one of these days since we live only an hour from each other!

February 2019 Club Announcements
"Hi! Do you have any questions about the club?" - The New Facebook Chatbot on Main Pages. If you have visited any of our non-meeting pages in the past few days, you'll notice that we now have a Facebook Chatbot active on our site. This is one of our new initiatives to try to convert more prospective leads into members, as well as to increase interaction between guests and our club. Messages will be responded to by our social media team. Please note this messenger chat isn't designed for club members. Members, if you still want to contact someone, please direct your notices to the email of the member or the officer you want to reach.
2019 Homepage Refresh! After hearing feedback from members, the webmasters can now say that we have finally gotten around to updating the main hero image on the homepage into something that we believe better represents the global and the digital nature of our club. We'll be periodically changing the graphic throughout the year, as we continue to refresh different parts of our site.
Join page updated! The webmaster team has done a much-needed facelift for the Join page. The start of a new year is the perfect time to share with friends and colleagues our Join page!
Weekly Meeting Disqus Reactions Updated. Did you know you can leave a reaction for each of our weekly meetings now? Right above the comments for a weekly meeting, you'll now find four different reactions you can vote for. We've also added some comment policy, and are working on fine-tuning a few other pieces to the comments and the meetings.

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good
Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.
Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week!This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

In the club that Keith, Shags, and I belonged to before ReCSV started, several of our members would ride in that each year, as that eclub was based in Arizona. Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week.
Growing up as a child of Vietnamese immigrants, I heard first hand the stories my mom would share to me about her love for education despite living in poverty during the Vietnam War. With 5 other siblings, my mom oftentimes had to share her school supplies and even her clothing. My mother and her elder sister took turns sharing a backpack. One would go to school in the day time and the other at night. When my mom’s pencil became a small stub, she would use her knife to sharpen what little was left of her pencil. Despite her poverty, she was accepted into medical school. Because of her pursuit for freedom in America, she was unable to become the doctor she had dreamed to be. My whole life, I have admired my mother and her strength for sacrificing her own future so that I could succeed in America. My life goal is not only to be a caring physician but to help children in poverty achieve their educational goals. I aspire to lessen the burden with all that I can give to them. I was told by a wise Rotarian that “we stand on the shoulders of those before us,” and I will stand firm and strong for the future generation to stand on my shoulders.My goal was to collaborate with VN Hope Alliance, a nonprofit organization, that provides healthcare for the Vietnamese population. VN Hope was formerly a part of Project Vietnam, in which I attended two medical missions in 2014 and 2015. I returned as a student leader for VN Hope summer of 2018.VN Hope allowed me to properly distribute the school supplies and children multivitamins as needed during their Summer medical mission. Thousands of people from all ages receive treatment during our two week medical mission. After going through the various health stations, patients are led to the final two rooms; pharmacy and gifts. There they received our generous donations.
