Meeting for the Week of Jan. 26th, 2015
Greetings
Welcome to the first meeting of the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley! Our goal each week is to inspire our members and guests to get new ideas on service, and act on those ideas to help others. We will tell of the work we are doing as a club, of opportunities in District 5170, and of innovation in service in every form we can find it.Members, we hope this is the start of a wonderful new experience for you with Rotary. Guests, thank you for joining us, and we hope you will return often to share your ideas with us.
Focused Service
Rotary is a service organization. That you know, but do you know the areas of focus for service for our 1.2 million members around the world? They are: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies. Our club will engage in projects in all these areas. That said, as a club we do have a defined focus: education and entrepreneurship. How can we educate the leaders of tomorrow? Inspire our colleagues and neighbors to want to serve? Support those who will act on clever insights to address the most stubborn problems we face?We highlight a video this week which tells the story of Kelvin Doe, a teen from Sierra Leone who acts on possibilities. May his story inspire you to act to support people like him in your communities and everywhere.
Thanks to David Sengeh for sharing Kelvin's story at FETC in January.
Club Happenings
New Member Orientation
All of our members who are new to Rotary either should have attended the orientation meeting we did on January 17th, or should follow this link to the new member orientation information Membership Chair Shags put together. That document also includes a link to the half-hour presentation Shags gave.
Service Time
Each week, we will ask you to use this survey to report any service activities in which you've been involved. The idea is to be able to properly follow what we are doing to help people around the world. Please follow the link above to report any service you have been involved with over the last week.
Committee NewsEach week, you'll also learn about the work of our different committees to stay on top of your participation (every member of our club is on one or two committees), and find out what is happening with the others. Watch for news starting next week!
District and Area Happenings
District Newsletter
Get the latest information from members around the district via the monthly district newsletter. January's issue includes greetings from Governor Ed Jellen, information about club's activities, such as the Santa Clara club's annual Christmas for Kids event last month, the Lunar New Year Dinner next month to raise money for projects by the Fremont-Union City-Newark club (F.U.N. Rotary), an article about a district team that traveled to Southeast Asia to help implement a Vocational Training Team Grant at the Mahosot Hospital in Vientiane, Laos, and more. Our club gets a nice mention on the front page, by the way.
District Conference
Each spring, our district has its annual conference for members of all the district's clubs. Please save April 17th-19th as a time to attend if you are able. You will find more details on p4 of the district newsletter.
Exercise for a Good Cause
The Lam Research Heart & Soles 5K invites everyone to participate in a family fun run/walk supporting healthier school lunches by raising funds to place salad bars in Silicon Valley K-12 schools. The event is on Saturday, Feb. 5th, with the 5K starting at 9:00a, and the Kids Fun Run (ages 2-7) starting at 10:30. Location: Hellyer County Park (985 Hellyer Avenue, San Jose). The World of Rotary
Rotary has a long history of small- and huge-scale service, but not so amazing a history of getting the word out about what Rotarians do. In 1980, a group decided to work to build a Rotary float for the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, in part, to let people know about the good work our many clubs do. While not a formal project of Rotary, it's become something quite special, and many clubs support the effort with donations and/or volunteers. Our Public Relations Committee Chairperson, Chris Cochrane, made a short video about this year's group using nothing but an iPhone. Enjoy!
The Power of Images
The picture below may look like a sunset, but it's a sunrise. "Wait, but if it's the sun over the ocean, that can't be California," you say. Indeed, this is in Australia, near Sydney. The image represents three things for our eclub.First, a sunrise starts a day, and our eclub is just getting started. Bring on the day!Second, it isn't in Silicon Valley. While our online club has a focus on the San Francisco Bay Area, some of our members are far away. The opportunity to share cool ideas about innovative ways to serve others is not limited by distance.Third, the image itself is public domain. That means it is perfectly legal to use, and it will be our habit to use media that allows for embedding, is Creative Commons-licensed, is public domain, is our own, or for which we have permission. That's good digital citizenship, and we'll live up to it.Coogee Ocean Shore Coast, Sydneyby Patty Jansen
