This Meeting's Highlights

Speaker: Eve Dolkart

Program: Empowering Women Entrepreneurs to Move Honduras Forward

Meeting for the week of July 27th to August 2nd, 2015

Greetings

Welcome from President Rushton Hurley

July is winding down, but we should not let the month pass without recognizing the special day that is Thursday the 30th.Many of you are familiar with the efforts of the United Nations related to peacekeeping efforts, the World Health Organization, and/or the Millennium Development Goals. They also sponsor all kinds of other programs, and one, it turns out, is the International Day of Friendship! How cool is that?Celebrate that day this week by contacting a few friends, asking them if they knew of the International Day of Friendship, telling them why they're cool people, and then sharing something cool that's happened in your life lately. Feel free to then invite them to visit our Rotary eclub!Rotarian guests, we ask that you contribute whatever for you is the regular cost of a Rotary meal to the efforts of our club. We provide several options below:

Send via our secure Happy Dollars form.

Send via Google Wallet to: ecsv.rotary@gmail.com

Send via PayPal to: ecsv.rotary@gmail.comTo pay via Google Wallet or PayPal, you'll need to log in to your account with those companies. Those of you who prefer a more traditional approach can mail a check made out to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley to our treasurer:

℅ Allen Thompson,

13500 Cascade Ct.,

Bakersfield CA 93314.

Non-Rotarian guests, you are certainly welcome to help us out, too!

Dues Reminder

New Member Time

It is our pleasure for the third time this month to bring someone new into our club! Members will remember the email with Hardeep Singh's complete bio from several weeks ago, but I have asked her to share with everyone her reason for seeking to be part of Rotary and this eclub.

Hardeep Singh"I'm joining this club because I have been dedicated to Rotary since I was a child, and I was also a Rotaractor for almost five years. I have participated in many Rotary and Rotaract community projects and events, and I love the fellowship, leadership, and networking opportunities that I have experienced through Rotary. My involvement in this organization thus far has changed my life, and I would like to be more active, as a Rotarian, despite any limitations I may have due to my location now or in the future and due to my busy schedule. I'm so honored to be able to continue serving others in Rotary through this club!"

Hardeep, our board and our members have approved your application and we welcome you into our club. As you have learned in the application process and from the content of our meetings, we expect you to share your ideas, contribute your time to worthy causes, support projects of this club and The Rotary Foundation, attend weekly and participate actively, and encourage those who are working to improve communities around the world.Let our club's focus on education, entrepreneurship, and innovation inform your thinking about possibilities for what you do.Know that the members of this club are here to support you and work with you.And finally, keep Rotary's Four-Way Test in your heart. The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do:* Is it the TRUTH?* Is it FAIR to all concerned?* Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?* Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? You are now part of an organization of over 1.2 million women and men in over 34,000 clubs around the world. Our motto is Service Above Self, our members are glad you are with us, and our belief is that you will help us make great things happen!

Caring for Others

One important mark of a society is how it cares for those in need. In this case, you're welcome to identify in your comment at the end all the needy ones you identify in this fun video. We'll file this one under the Innovation in Caring tab.

Don't forget to mention in the comments at the end your take on who the needy ones are!

The Power of Images

Gardens and Culture

Part of the fun of being in an eclub is the interest members have in seeing lots of different places around the world. My wife and I went with close friends and their kiddos to northwest Washington and Vancouver Island last week. The trip was highlighted by a visit to Butchart Gardens near Victoria, which has all sorts of amazing flowers, including an area with an Italian theme, another designed in Japanese style, and much more.Members, if you've been somewhere this summer (winter for you, Richard) that fascinates you, let's share it with the club! Contact Rushton (president@siliconvalleyrotary.com) to share a picture.

Crater Lake (National Geographic)

The picture below is similar to another we recently highlighted by our Camera Czar Keith Marsh, but this one from Crater Lake from the North Rim looking south has the distinction of having been recognized by National Geographic as part of the Your Shot Photo of the Day program last week.Added comment from Keith: "The lights on the horizon are from Klamath Falls, Oregon, about 60 miles away."Very cool!

What We Do

July 2015 potluck 1500

The Beauty of the Potluck

There's something beautiful about having a bunch of people bring food to a get-together. Last Saturday, a group of us shared food, ideas, and fun, including bringing several folks in via Hangout. From left to right are eClub Rotary Foundation Chair Frank Trippichio, Guest Navid Fattahi, Guest Maryam Russel, Treasurer Allen Thompson, Membership Chair Shags Shagrin with Truffle, President Rushton Hurley, Member Yvonne Kwan, Member Gene Tognetti, District Rotary Foundation Chair Cecelia Babkirk, and President-Elect and Webmaster Mitty Chang. Not pictured, but very cool for joining in a Hangout were PR Chair Chris Cochrane, Service Chair Martin Fox, and Member Mark Dohn.

District Newsletter

Our district's fearless leader, Susan Valenta, tells in this month's district newsletter about her trip with a team from our district to Monterrey, Mexico, last March to help distribute wheelchairs to families in need. Building on that project is her service goal for this year.As a district, we hope to fill a container with 280 wheelchairs (at $150 each) to ship to Mexico and beyond, where Rotarians working with us will help with the distribution. Plans are still coming together for that, so watch for news from the district about being part of the trip to Mexico in the spring. You can find Governor Susan's July newsletter and this story at this link.

The World of Rotary

Rotarian Action Group Against Child Slavery

In June Carol Metzker of the Rotarian Action Group Against Child Slavery introduced us to the efforts of their group. The chairman of the group, Mark Little of England, released their June newsletter this week, so those of you following this topic can read of good news in Indonesia and bad news in Delhi. Thanks, Mark, Carol, and RACSRAG for all you are doing to protect children around the world.

Letting Children Be Children

Interact Clubs are Rotary-sponsored programs for highschoolers that do all sorts of good in their communities and beyond. The Interact community in our district is the largest and most active in the world, I've been told, and this story from Rotary's convention blog captures that well.Children in poverty-stricken and war-torn places often have very little to play with, and Interactors in our district decided that investing in ultra-durable soccer balls would be a good way to help those children have a chance to play with something safe.Read the full story at the District 5170 site and at the end of today's meeting, add some kudos in the comments below for our amazing Interact students!

Fighting Polio

Last Friday, Rotary released this video, called, "Nigeria One Year Milestone."

We who are now Rotarians are the Rotarians who will end this terrible disease - let's keep these efforts going!

Service Time

Last week of the month! If you haven't reported service you've done in the last few weeks, now is the time. Tell the story of how you have helped others, whether in a big or small way, and let's build our encouragement of each other to regularly experience the joy and better perspective that come with helping those in need.Next week, we'll catch up on what we've been up to! Report yours here.

Happy Dollars

Last week, we learned during the hangout done during the potluck that Chris Cochrane is recovering well from a surgery. I asked him what it was, and he said he'd had some "stuff that didn't belong" removed. Works for me!

member Rushton Hurley (California, USA) ($5) Glad to hear things are going well after Chris' stuffectomy!

member Martin Fox (Utah, USA) ($20) Some karma happy healing bucks going out to Chris Cochrane.

member Richard Knaggs (Western Cape, South Africa) ($15) In celebration of our elementary students winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Regional World Robot Olympiad on Saturday. Woooohoo!

The Tidbit

Lisa has a third in this series of geo-tidbits, and this one is extra-special, as you'll be part of it! Watch the video and follow its instructions using the link in the paragraph, below.

Being online doesn't mean we can't connect and collaborate in meaningful ways. Getting to know the places we are from is easy using Google Maps. After watching the video above with the instructions, click this link and share where you are or where you are from!

A Little Humor

from GreatCleanJokes.com

A man walking along the beach tripped on a bottle. Picking it up, he opened the stopper and a genie appeared."Okay, sir, you've got one wish. What do you want?" asked the genie in a mellifluous voice."I want all ladies to love me," said the man. And with a puff of smoke, he turned into a bar of chocolate.

Selected Comments from Last Week

Each week we ask our members and guests to share their thoughts about the program and the meeting. Last week's program by Nate Gildart about musicians in Tokyo working together to support various projects generated plenty of comments, and we share some of them here.

member Manju Ramachandran (California, USA) Thank you for sharing. I didn't realize that 65% of the calls were Japanese. That's surprising! Thank you for spearheading music as a way for healing bringing the community together.

member François Tessier (Quebec, Canada) I would say, "You rock!" Wow: the power of music is unlimited! Congratulations for this great work and for the inspiration.

member Keith Marsh (California, USA) Love the Star Party and Google Maps idea by Lisa. Nate, thanks for your program and look forward to hearing the music.

member Andrew Taw (California, USA) Happy Birthday Paul! And cool Tidbit Lisa! And thank you for a great presentation Nate!

member Martin Fox (Utah, USA) Star Party opened my eyes on multiple levels of what's possible. Keith, your Denali shot of the summit was indeed rare and awesome. Go Allen for getting to play with Team Canada. Great tidbit Lisa - love that! Nate, great stuff!

member Heather Shaw (California, USA) Great talk! I love hearing about what an impact can be achieved with grass roots ideas.

member Rushton Hurley (California, USA) I'm a great believer in the power of music, and love having Nate's message about what musicians are making happen in Tokyo. Lisa, great tidbit, again!

guest Mary Lynn Pelican of the Niles (Fremont) Rotary Club (California, USA) This was my first time visiting the eClub of Silicon Valley and what a TREAT! I don't need make-up meetings since I attend a minimum of three Rotary/Rotaract meetings weekly, but attended to experience an e-club meeting for myself so I can share my experience with others. Thank you! Ambassador of FUN Photographer, Niles (Fremont) Rotary Club Member, & District 5170 Rotaract Liaison.P.S. A shout-out for the Big West Rotaract Conference this past weekend July 17-19, 2015 at the Sheraton San Jose, Milpitas.

member Lisa Highfill (California, USA) Thank you for sharing- love hearing the music connections. I am always thinking of ways we can use technology to connect the mission, friendships, and message of our goals. Each week, I get more ideas. I'd love to collaborate with others on this sometime.

member Yvonne Kwan (California, USA) Music and service -- two things that I love and even better when put together. Nate, it was such a pleasure to hear about how you're using music to make the world a better place. Keep up the rockin' work!Lisa, love that tidbit! One of the awesome things about Google Maps that I love :)Happy birthday, Paul! Hope you enjoyed your day and that video!

guest Jeffrey Allen of the Downtown Oakland Rotary Club (California, USA) I just wanted to comment on what a great idea this club is.[Jeffrey, you and all our guests are welcome to join us any week you wish - we look forward to having you back! Please also free free to share our site with others.]
