Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Message from President Mitty

Members, welcome back!Guests and visiting Rotarians, welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley! My name is Mitty, and I am president of this Rotary club. Every week we bring to you a new meeting and a new program on education, innovation, technology, or humanitarian service. We are a group of global and local leaders who love helping make our communities a better place.Last week I celebrated my 28th birthday, and thought it was a good time for a reflection. I am a strong believer that in every organization, it's important to constantly reflect, evaluate, and reassess goals as necessary. We are now a little more than three and a half months into this Rotary year. Since July 1, our club has grown from a club of 29 members to a club of 38 members. We've been fortunate enough to add so many wonderful new faces to our family. We are also very fortunate that our veteran members are still actively contributing to the club and participating in their own ways. Members -- you are absolutely the foundation and lifeblood of this club. The club leadership exists to help each of you.Since we launched the leadership development grants, we have had half a dozen members submit requests already. I'm looking forward to seeing more members actively getting involved, and applying for the resources our club provides you to be active. But as I reflect about all the growth and the active participation, I also think about the small handful of members who have asked us for official leaves of absences. I think about the members who feel disconnected from our main group either because of geographic distance or difficulty balancing Rotary with life. I think of each of you who are reading this, but may not be actively involved with the club but are looking for a way to do so. As I reflect, I will announce that I am renewing my pledge to each of you to be the best club president that I can be, and to continue trying to make this experience the best Rotary eClub experience possible. But as one of my wise, good friends in the club recently reminded me: you can't do it all.Because of that I am officially making a callout to all members who feel that they have some flexibility in their schedules to reach out to me at president@siliconvalleyrotary.com and tell me what you're passionate about, or how you'd like to get more involved. This could be about club operations, or it could be about starting a project in your local community, or maybe you don't have an idea but just want to help volunteer some of your time. Our club and our communities need more of us involved if you can spare even just a couple of hours a week. Thank you in advance!Of course, for our guests this week -- I'm so glad that you're here! As you read through our meeting, you'll eventually get to our program for the week. Every week we invite in a guest speaker to talk to us about something related to education, technology, innovation, or humanitarian service. Our guest this week is Karen Addato of Breakthrough Outreach. I met Karen while she was exhibiting at the San Jose State University campus with the HiTechRover RV that they use to drive around the bay area for outreach events, including job training and preparation for the homeless. You'll hear more about the Rover from Karen in the program for this meeting, so I don't want to spoil too much. I am very impressed by their work, and think that in the Silicon Valley, it's absolutely necessary to provide job training skills for the homeless as well as an opportunity to connect to the Internet.Enjoy the rest of the meeting!

Yours in service,

Mitty Chang,

President

The Power of Images

They say a photo is worth a thousand words. We believe photos have the power not only to tell stories, but to spark imagination and creativity. This segment is to bring to you a photo of the week we think will create a spark for you.

BMW recently just unveiled a concept for a self-balancing BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 concept motorcycle on the last of four international stops of the "Iconic Impulses" event, on October 11, 2016 in Santa Monica, California. Weekly Inspiration: 5 Curious Answers to 5 Simple Questions

Every week we bring you videos of innovation, inspiration, and entrepreneurship. This week we are featuring a video from Youtube channel Mind Warehouse, talking about 5 questions that you probably have wondered at one point.

And now, all together everyone... "Ohhhhh..."

October from the Baroness of Birthdays

We love our members. Without them, this club wouldn’t exist. This section is a segment dedicated to appreciation them and their special days.

Hello Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley! This is Nicole, your Baroness of Birthdays. I was thrilled when Mitty asked me to be your Baroness of B-days. My two favorite things are balloons and cake!! Every month, we’ll give shoutouts to our fellow Rotarians and I’ll give you all some fun facts that you might or might not have known before.

For October, we are celebrating Catherine Liu, Deepali Mehrotra, Kristi Govertsen, Mitty Chang, and Stephen Zhou.

On October 1,1908, the first Model T ford was put on the market.

October folklore tell us that when deer are in a gray coat in the month of October, expect a hard winter. It also says that if we have much rain in October, we will have much wind in December, and if we have a warm October, we can expect a cold February.

October is National Pizza Month AND National Cookie Month.

“October, baptize me with leaves! Swaddle me in corduroy and nurse me with split pea soup. October, tuck tiny candy bars in my pockets and carve my smile into a thousand pumpkins. O autumn! O teakettle! O grace!”―

Happy Birthday Catherine, Deepali, Kristi, Mitty, and Stephen!

p.s. If we miss your birthday at all, please do not hesitate to reach out to us or leave a comment! There's always a chance for human error... or there's the chance that we don't have your birthday recorded correctly!

World of Rotary: Interact's Fall Leadership Conference

Working with the youth and the next generation is something our club loves, but is also a key foundation of Rotary. This segment features an update about Interact, the high school service club program we help support.

From Yvonne Kwan, our Club's Youth Service Chair:

"

On October 9, member Ken Oku and I attended Interact District 5170's Fall Leadership Conference (FLC) at Independence High School in San Jose. With over 4,000 attendees, the conference held workshop sessions that included leadership skills, team-building, and a hands-on service project. We were floored by the energy and passion that emanated from each person. Just like Rotary International's president and our District Governor, the Interact District Governor Marco Siu and Lt. Governor Victoria Huynh chose a theme for their year. This year, they chose 'Embrace the Unexpected.'

Each year, Interact District 5170 has a district-wide community project and international project that is revealed at FLC. Last year, their international project of 'Hello, My Name Is...' raised funds to promote awareness of human trafficking and to provide assistance to survivors; as a district, they raised $157,000 towards that project. This year, community coordinator Rosabel Wu revealed the project 'Circle of Love' to focus on bringing awareness of mental illnesses; their international coordinator Misaki Otani presented the project 'Me the Human' to focus on bringing aid to Syrian refugees.

Weekly Update: Hey eClub Rotarians! We recently updated the eClub mailing list. You should have each received an email this past week. In addition, you have each been added to our Google directory of all members, as I know some of you have requested a Google doc in addition to the information in the members only area of this website. Some of you might also have noticed that in the comments section, your names are now appearing with a "Club Member" bar next to it. For those of you who have been commenting lately and have registered DISQUS accounts, we have been adding you each as moderators. Happy Dollars

Each week we ask our members to share news with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal for this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each other, while giving back to a good cause.

Last week's happy dollars went towards funding the Erskine Fire Fund, which helped families who lost their homes in the fire last month. Here are the happy dollar donations from last week:

From member Rory Olsen ($15):

Polio plus please.

From member Chris Cochrane ($25):

From Brian Liddicoat ($15):

"1st big rain of the season coming to Bay Area tomorrow! Hooray!"

From Allen Thompson ($25):

"Happy Dollars for the Erskine Fire Fund, helping the Kern River Valley Rotary Club help the 100's of families who lost their homes. I simply have a hard time even imagining what it would be like for everything I have to be suddenly and violently gone."

From Ken Oku ($10):

"Great supply drive with Nova chiropractic, and getting to meet Rushton & Tabatha"

Thank you everyone so much for your kind donations to the Erskine Fire fund last week! That money will be donated to the Erskine Fire Fund.

Wondering about what is Happy Dollars?

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)This week's happy dollars go towards supporting our club activities.

So what are you happy about? Share with us below!

Selected Six

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select six comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are six comments selected from the meeting last week about The Moment in Rotary When You Get Hooked:

From member Brett Sham (Sydney, Australia):“DG Jeff, thansk for sharing your story. It's always great to hear what Rotary means to someone and the opportunities it has provided them. I've just spend the last 3 days in sunny Brisbane, Queensland (Australia) at the Australian Rotaract Conference where I got to spend time with over 200 energetic and entusiastic members of the Rotary family and listen as they shared their personal stories. I'm leaving this weekend so energised and passionate about doing good in the world and can't wait for Atlanta!

From member Heather Shaw (California, USA):Governor Jeff. Thank you so much for the personal touch of your presentation-kept my attention and inspired! Looking forward to seeing you on the Big Dipper in Santa Cruz! Thank you to Mitty and Rushton for your support with the school supply drive. Ken was awesome as the official balloon game volunteer! Thanks everyone for your support. Details will follow but enjoy the picture

From member Kristi Govertsen (Montana, USA):Thank you, DG Jeff!

From member Nicole Pham (California, USA):Thank you Jeff for all you do for Rotary!!! GO AGGIES!! I'm so proud to be a district council advisor for Interact because every time I see them, I see a light burn brighter inside of them. Youth empowerment is so important.

From member Linda Diekman (Illinois, USA):“Jeff, thanks for grounding us all in the current district initiatives/activities!“

From member Chris Cochrane (Toronto, Canada):Jeff, you rock! Hope to to clear my schedule to allow time to attend the District Conference. Perhaps be the only Canadian in the crowd? Happy Birthday Mitty..... excellent meeting. Thanks to Allen Thompson for the drive by footage of the devastation caused by Erskine Fire. T'was a pleasure to package Allen's footage for use in this meeting.

Thank you everyone for attending last week’s meeting!

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!

You’re Almost Done! One last thing: The Attendance Survey..

Thanks for reading and watching this week’s meeting. You have two last things to do before you’re done. First, we have a very short attendance survey below for you to fill out to record your attendance.

Visiting Rotarians, this is how you can get an email receipt to pass along to your club’s secretary as proof that you’ve attended our meeting if you need it for makeups.

Non-Rotarian Guests, we would love to see who is dropping by our meetings! This part is optional for you though. If you think you may want to join our eClub at some point in the future, we would strongly recommend you fill out the attendance form as it will improve your chances of success for your membership application.

More importantly, for all members and guests — we strongly recommend and ask that you leave a comment below in our comments area below. Tell us how you enjoyed the program. Ask this week’s speaker any questions you might have. Or just stop by and say hello and tell us where you’re from!
